2 true 5th wheel trailers for a half ton..

At a recent RV show, there was a push on 5th wheel trailers for 1/2 tons... some I would have argued. i think the thought is that if the truck has power enough to pull it, than it is OK.

When we travel, I am carrying with me the most important people in my life (pets too

) so I err on safety.

When I was looking for a tow-able 5th for my RAM, I came across these two companies. Until my DW vetoed them, I was ready to make a purchase.

You must have a awful small Ram for a 3500 lb single axle 5th wheel trailer and a 4500 GVWR TT.
These two would fit in with a small 6600 GVWR 1500 truck with a small V6 engine or the Colorado/Canyon small trucks.

1500 trucks can have GVWRs from 6600 on up to 8600 with 3600 RAWR up to 6084 RAWR with 10k-11k tow ratings and 3000+ lb payloads.

Isn't that obvious that they are light ? That is the point of this post..

What I was looking for (and many others as well) was a small, easy to pull 5th wheel trailer...take a look at them. The truck wouldn't know they are on the back...and they have construction techniques that should be on larger trailers..

I was just tossing this out for others to see since there seems to be a delusion (promoted by trailer sales reps) that a short box 1/2 can haul properly any 5th wheel....like I was told with a 34 footer...

have a look at my profile... small light 5th wheels are out there but hard to find sometimes.
I pull mine with no issues at all.....

i know the Rockwood is popular and Cougar by Keystone is another really popular 1/2 ton towable and personally i've seen a few of the Cougars hooked up to F150 s with what appears to be no issues at all. I also saw one hooked up to a Dodge 1500 and everytime he hit a speedbump in the campground the rear bumper scraped - which in its self was funny but the roars from the other campers was the best part.

Here in Australia, Asian Pickups like this Mazda have no problem towing this Wildcat. Cruise at 60mph, fuel economy about twice that of a U.S. 1/2 ton

I'm sure the Mazda will pull that Wildcat on a flat surface, but traveling the Sierra's in California might be a bit much. I would be darn nervous trying to stop that trailer going down a grade. Wonder what the owner did to retrofit the truck if anything?

Absolutely nothing , as far as modifications. Unlike US Midsizers, this has a 2,200-3000lb payload. No problem towing up Mountains for a 25-26 ft 5ver Global Midsizers used a lot for towing in New Zealand, highest peak 12,000ft

In New Zealand they make very few Towables, but a few Class's C's This company imports US , Australian and European Towables. Notice the lightweight 30ft 5ver pulled by a Ford Ranger(sister vehicle to the Mazda) 5th slide along

Last time I heard the word "ute" was in My Cousin Vinny ;D. What the heck is a Japanese "ute"?
By the way, I'm amazed with the payload of these trucks.

A Japanese Pickup truck No nothing to do with a Tundra or Tacoma, they are all 3 litre Diesels, with at least 2,200lb min Payload. The " I Tonne" class of Global Pickup Truck is exploding. Unlike US Pickups, they are very good Off Road, have great Fuel Efficiency, but the trade off is they are narrower so you are not going to put 4 people in a DualCab for a lengthy journey, OK for two adults and two children. Ride is not hard despite the much heavier payloads, but "skittish " due to the fact that the Pickup has heavy loads. Ute is an Australian term that applied to the unique car/ trucks you see here, now applies to any Pickup, that can be used as a car i.e A F250/F350 would be Utes
Single Cab will have the 3,000lb payloads, maximum I have seen is a 3,150lb
