The 3rd/4th week in March, we will be heading back to NH from Arkansas via Rte. I-40. Looking for advice on "Must See" sites in Memphis, Nashville and  anything else along the way.  ::) ??? Also looking for respectable campgrounds near the sites. Thanks in advance.  :) ;)

PS: We are already planning to stop and visit with Elvis. Would you recommend the Platinum Tour of Graceland?

Other than Nashville, and assorted  music sites, I can not make many recommendations.

But a mear what, 39 miles (I think) north of TN on I-75 is Corbin, KY.. and the KFC there is a must stop at least once.

NOTE: I am not a fan of KFC  Kentucky Fried Chicken was a very good product (Perhaps not the best for your health but it tasted great, Was properly cooked and so on)  KFC made major changes to the product and in my opinion, and that of a Federal court (Detroit district) judge, the KFC product is not nearly as good as Kentucky Fried was.

But Corbin... Was where Harlan Sanders grew up.. and established what was to become the 1st KFC.

When you visit Graceland, a highly recommended campground is Tom Sawyer's RV Park across the river in West Memphis, Ar.

One caveat - we haven't stayed there, but numerous folks here have and posted positive reports.

Thanks Tom. I just put it at the top of my list.  It looks like a nice park. They have many sites over looking the Mississippi.

Sun Studio in Memphis is a must see.  The number of musicians that have either started there or recorded there is staggering.  In Nashville, the backstage tour at the Grand Old Opry is a great tour.  Also the Willie Nelson museum.  Gatlinburg (sp?), TN and Smokey Mt. National Park is a nice spot for a few days.  Could be cold then, but I'd visit there again in a minute.

Thanks Elliott. I put them on my list. Another one is the Johnny Cash Museum. Have you been there and is it worth it? Maybe someone else has if you haven't.

In TN we first stayed at Pigeon Forge KOA, great place right close to Dollywood. We had a blast here at Dollywood and the local amusements leading into and around the park, you have to see it to believe it. Mooshine is also legal and free to sample on the blvd in Gatlinburg, walk around and enjoy all three brewers. There are rocking chairs and plenty of folks dancing, have a good time as it's a bit different way of life. Take a drive through the smoky mountains if time permits.
Nashville Country RV park, great place as we stayed here without reservations during the country music festival (we didn't know it was going on that weekend) last summer. These folks made us welcome for 5 or 6 days. Went to the Grand Ole Opry but didn't tour, just visited the old site as there was plenty to see during the CMA fest downtown. Amazing what some of the musicians went through during the days of Johnny cash etc. No matter what bar you stop in at there is no such thing as a bad house band! Everyone is trying too be the next big discovery and they all work for tips.
Johnny Cash museum, well worth it. The Hermitage mansion, it was ok, DW loved it.
In Memphis, Tom Sawyer rv park (just across border in Memphis AR, not Memphis TN, about 25 mins from Graceland) has some great hosts and all very friendly, real cool barge traffic on the river right in front of your site. Graceland, what can I say except you have to do it. We did the normal tour seeing the mansion and the planes (can't remember if that was platinum or not) but a good tour. Stop in and get some of the best shake & baked catfish down the street while you are around this area. Do the Sun records tour, Stax museum of soul music and the rock & soul museum, we had a blast at all 3. You have to go to Beale street if you like music. Go the first time during the day to feel more comfortable, after dark the panhandlers come out. We felt very safe but some might not after dark. I would also recommend going to the Martin Luther King civil rights museum. So much history here its hard to believe. Most of us are old enough to remember that day on the evening news at the Lorraine motel but it's surreal to see the exact balcony and rooms etc. all preserved.
We spent 7 days in Knoxville around Dollywood area, then 6 days in Nashville area, then another 6 days in Memphis area and all 3 places had us going to visit something specific every day, take as much time as you can and google everything to get an idea of some kind of schedule. Try for reservations on Friday or Saturday otherwise you will probably be ok. Hope this helps.

WOW!! I've got a lot to pick from now. Won't be able to see everything this time around. May have to make another trip through in the future. Thanks for all the info.

There is a road that goes thru the mountains called "Tail of the Dragon".  It is south of Knoxville.  It is real popular with motorcycles.  DO NOT try it with anything bigger than a sports car.  Took the rental car thru it.  Lot of fun and great scenery.  There are a couple youtube videos about it.

Are you saying my full size truck will not make it?

Did it twice in the one ton Dodge - once each way!

I did it in a rental car(let's get mental with the rental!) each way.  Met an 18 wheeler on the way back from NC into Tenn.  a bunch of motorcycles were escorting it.  You could tell they were pissed!  Tennessee just announced recently that they are finally prohibiting anything larger than single rear axle vehicles.

We will be in Memphis the week of 4/6 to see Jonny Lang in Tunica and take in some Memphis sites and BBQ.  Planning to setup at the Jellystone campground.  Looked at Tom Sawyer but April/May is high river time and that place might be flooded.  They can give you more info on that and there is a link on their website to check river flood predictions.  Been through TN a lot since we live 85 miles from Nashville.  Have fun!

I saw that on their web Site. We'll be there near the end of March. Hopefully we'll be OK. They said they would know around ten days before a flood will happen so when I call to make a reservation, they should know if there's a potential future problem.  ::)  Thanks for the info.

Tom Sawyer's RV Park

If this is the place we remember it's right on the Mississippi and a great place.  BUT you're saying March.  Be sure to call ahead because - being on the river - they can be flooded.  With all the snow up north this year the Mississippi River, as well as others, might have a lot of flooding so be aware of that as you travel.  We were okay the year we stayed there but the riverfront RV parks were getting ready to close within several days of our visit.  Had we wanted to stay the following week the answer would have been "sorry, we're closed."

By the way, all great suggestions for places to see.  Even my mother loved Graceland and I wasn't allowed to watch "swivel hips" on TV when Elvis was starting on the Ed Sullivan show!  Okay, so Mother mellowed.  ;) ;D

If you can't stay at Tom Sawyer you can always go to Elvis Presley Blvd Park about 2 blocks from Graceland. Not the nicest park on the blvd but only $30/nt and great folks. There was a nicer park just down the street but it was around $45/nt.
Almost forgot, at Tom Sawyers the office is on wheels so they can move it when the CG floods, too funny!

There's also an RV park at the Graceland Hotel, across the street from Graceland. Not especially fancy, but worked for our overnight stay. I stayed in the coach while my other half did the Elvis thing.

I think this could make an interesting stop in Memphis.  The opening date was set for late 2014, so should be open in March.

In Memphis, I wouldn't miss treating yourself to a slab of dry-rub ribs at "Rendezvous".
It's a frumpy, basement restaurant off the beaten path.
Some of the best ribs I've ever had.

We will check it out.  Thanks.

Update: Just read an article written on December 2014, it said the pyramid will open late April or early May. Looks like I'm going to miss it.  SHUCKS!!!!  :'( :-[ :(
