Where to camp at Yellowstone?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing!

We are planning a Yellowstone trip as well, for late August/ early Sept. Would you recommend campground reservations at some of these places for that time frame? Wasn't sure if things would be winding down by then.

2 years ago in September I was on a motorcycle trip to Montana pulling a pop up tent trailer. I emailed one of the KOA in West Yellowstone at that time and asked if I needed reservations, and they replied that I didn't need them, but would be a good idea to call a couple days ahead to be sure.
Glad I didn't make reservations as my plans changed and I didn't go to Yellowstone.

There are quite a few campgrounds around including some very nice USFS places.  Grizzley is the nicest, and ironically, the most expensive.  There are also some less expensive, somewhat not so great places right in town.  Koa is a little ways outside of town and typical KOA.  Reservztions?  Probably good idea.

Grizzly RV Park

Short hop from there to Yellowstone entrance, will be going back for the "RVFORUM get together"

We are headed that way on Friday, first to Grand Teton NP but when we arrive at Yellowstone we will be staying at Fishing Bridge which does have electric.  We chose Fishing Bridge because it seems to be more centrally located and does have full hook-ups.

We are thinking about going to Yellowstone.  I looked online at several campgrounds around West Yellowstone.  Does anyone have info re: Madison Arms Resort?  The reviews on Trip Advisor are 50/50 and I don't think it really is a "resort" but a campground.
If we want to do the typical experiences, Old Faithful etc, what is the best entrance to be at?  We have a 5er so will be driving the truck around.
Thanks!

Though not the cheapest...our favorite place to RV in West Yellowstone is the Grizzy RV Park: http://www.grizzlyrv.com/

Thanks for the info.  We are looking forward to the trip and hoping the fires are out everywhere and there's no smoke.  :D

Lots of information.  Keep in mind distances don't mean much in YNP, no matter where you go it will take much longer than you can imagine.  Fishing Bridge is good for touring the East side, West Yellowstone for the West.

Take your time and enjoy.

Thank Fred, we are beginning to cut back the itinerary a bit.  The times on Google Map may not be realistic!

We are thinking about staying around Moran for a few day and visit Jackson and Grand Tetons.  Then on up towards Old Faithful etc for 3-4 days.  Sounds like Fishing Bridge would be a good place for Yellowstone,  are there recommendations for around the Moran, WY area?

By now you all have taken your trips.  For anyone else reading this thread... From Cody to the East Entrance there are lots of Forest Service Campgrounds, a couple with electric, offer reservations, suggest making them. Some campgrounds are as close as 3 miles from entrance.

West Yellowstone is a great place to stay with lots of campgrounds and RV parks both in and a few miles out of town. The biggest thing to remember lately is that September has become as busy as the rest of the time... Us retirees are keeping the parks busy!!!!

As to the person who mentioned Madison Arm Resort, we were in that area last week. It was quieter than a lot of the campgrounds, but is a dirt road for about 7 miles to there.. and then my camping book says if you want privacy, you will get in your rv or tent... It is a sardine park... unless the off season, late September... but is on the Lake if you have a boat...

We all need to write letters to Yellowstone and surrounding forests and ask them to keep campgrounds open later! They are closing earlier and earlier... we just got back from camping by Hebgan Lake and weather was beautiful, but almost every campground was closed already!
