Today three of us visited Jordan Music Services, a luthier in Concord, CA. I've used his services in the past, but the other two folks hadn't. This was both a productive and educational experience for us all. Two of us had banjo ukeleles that had one 'odd-sounding' string. It took John Jordan seconds to diagnose with his fingers that one banjo uke had a "lumpy" string and the other one had a 'nicked' string.
I had him replace all four strings, since they're all the same age, whereas the other guy had him replace just one string. I also had him show me how to correctly set the bridge, at best a compromise.
It's fascinating to watch this guy hit a metal plate on the wall of his shop (once) and tune all strings by ear. It didn't matter if he was talking, he heard and memorized the 'A' tone and proceeded to tune all strings.
