Hi.  We are 3 couples who usually spend 4 weeks every year riding the USA on Harleys, but this year have decided to rent RV's (Class C from Road Bear) and drive from New Jersey to Orlando in August for 20 days. Our proposed draft route is attached.

Unlike our Harley rides we have only set 2 dates ... the dates we pick up the RV's and the date we drop them off.  We did this with a view to be able to just stop if we find somewhere we would like to spend some time and not have to be at a booked hotel every night.

Hoping the well experienced forum members can provide any guidance and advice on a few questions :

(1) any suggestion/advice/enhancement on our route.  We intend to drive these byways : Journey Through Hallowed Ground, Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, Great River Road, Alabama's Coast Connection, A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, and Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway.
(2) we want to head into Washington to do a tour of the White House.  Any traps for young RV players in that city ?
(3) the only "cities" we intend to visit are Washington, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, Savannah (if time permits) and Orlando. Any suggestions on RV parks or campgrounds to use in those locations
(4) best/recommended apps for finding free locations (preferred) or paid campgrounds to stop at night
(4) any general points we should take into consideration

Appreciate your help in advance :)

Cheers

Greg

To tour Washington, I would stay at Greenbelt National Park.

The commercial campgrounds will cost $50-60/night. If you are willing to pay that, Cherry Hill is the recommended park in the area.

The Holocaust Museum in DC left me with impressions that I will never forget.

For part of the trip south, you might want to check into the Natchez Trace.

We haven't been on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a while but I saw recently that there are some low tunnels that RVs may not be able to go through.  Be sure of your clearance before starting (in feet not meters!).  See http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/v.php?pg=87 for height restrictions.

One of them is only 10 1/2'. WOW

White house tour's are by appointment only scudeled thure a member of congress.  So unless you did that already.  Its not gong to happen.  However all the other stuff like the Smithsonian are open and free

Dollywood.  Is also along your route.  A country/bluegrass  themed  park.  Very affordable and very american.  And yes it was founded by that dolly.  Dolley Parton.      Www.Dollywood.com

- When you're near Washington, I suggest a day at Mount Vernon (The docents' back story on the Round Barn alone is a gem of Americana.) or alternatively, a visit to Monticello in Charlottesville as you drive South through Virginia.
- We toured the York, PA Harley-Davidson plant many years ago. Although we're not motorcyclists, it was interesting and enjoyable.
- Our favorite campground in the Memphis area is Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in West Memphis, AR, on the West bank of the river. You'll be "up close and personal" with the 24/7 barge traffic, which fascinates some but others consider to be just noisy.
- Our favorite Florida barbecue comes from https://4rsmokehouse.com/locations/ . Their brisket is as close as I've found yet to that from "The Salt Lick" in Austin, Texas.
- Florida State parks offer some of the best affordable camping in the country.
Enjoy!
