We love Chicago
« on: July 01, 2015, 03:24:29 PM »
Chicago, what a city.....it has left us with many beautiful images of amazing architecture, breath taking lake views and most of all a heart warming experience. We drove in with our RV on a Sunday looking for a place to park. Pete, a kind young individual, who was obviously in charge of few parking stations, offered to show us safe parking at the UIC grounds, for two days and an overnight stay. He refused to take any payment. Jan insisted on at least giving him a tip. We were a short bike ride from the lake and all the attractions. We loved the bike friendly city and rode through out it the whole day. We spent the second day sight seeing on foot and the weather had been kind to us too. Ken and Sheila, we loved your home town. :))))

I am so glad you had a good time.  We were there right before you and we always have such a good time down on the lake front.  I hope you got to see Millenium Park and the "Bean" sculpture.  Enjoy the rest of your trip and we will see you next year.

Yes Sheila. Chicago waterfront is just stunning. We saw it all and have some fun in front of the cloud gate sculpture made by Indian born artist Kapoor . Please log in to my facebook to see the photos.

I personally love the bike ride along the shore and walk on the Navy pier the best.

We live on the Chicago lakefront  for close to 30 years. But I'm not sure where the UIC (University of Illinois, Chicago?) ground that you camped on are.

It's just west of the Dan Ryan and just south of the Eisenhower. Been there since the sixties, prior to that it was on Navy Pier.

Navy Pier is awesome. They were still doing some construction on it last summer when we were there but sure different than 30 yrs ago going to see the Batmobile! The Museum of S&I is always cool too, along with Brookfield and about 100 other destinations.

I think the question was where on the UIC campus where you able to camp?

Joel
There is not UIC campus where you can camp. We was just lucky to met the person in charge who arranged this specialty for us.
He felt sorry for Australian rv travelers and wanted to help us. This made our downtown visit so easy.

Of course. We've been to the campus many times. The question was, where did they park on the campus? Later posts indicated they got special attention because they are Australian.

I never would stay inside an RV of any kind inside the city limits of Chicago. The city is too dangerous for that.

Pretty broad brush to say that about the whole city, just not true. We walked miles of the streets of several Chicago neighborhoods just a few years ago. We were there for months. Some areas obviously are not safe, but many neighborhoods are quite safe. Like any city always be aware of your surroundings.

By the way a lot of people have parked overnight at the Truck Marshalling yards for McCormick Place. Not allowed when there is a Bears game or a Convention.

We attended an alumni reunion in Hyde Park about 8 years ago and the reunion organizers provided space for us in a university parking lot at Midway Plaisance west of Stoney Island. We boondocked there for about a week and had no issues. As Ken stated, you do have to be aware but there are places that can work.

Yes we do Mike and Swarovski.
We had no idea what to expect, but Chicago was really nice to visit. lot of people talk us out of this trip, but we stayed out of southern suburbs and that was the smart move. on the way out from Chicago we drive trough south Chicago and I understand why.
Hope you guys are happy and we are looking forward to see you next year again in Big bent Texas.
