As I recall, back in those days you had to be concerned with the front hubs as well. Locked or unlocked. My first Tracker was a 1999 automatic with 4WD and that was not a concern, but that was identified as an improvement over older models.
I seem to recall the Fitzgeralds towed that vintage of Tracker for awhile, so maybe they can help.
