That's what I remember from making the trip in 2001...

You guys are making me appreciate the ride in our Tradewinds more and more.... ;D

Actually, the worst part of I-10, the section that thumped you every 20 feet or so, is currently being rebuilt.  The new section between the Louisiana state line and Beaumont, TX will be 3 lanes each direction and is a brand new, thick concrete road (built to hold up to the pounding from the 18 wheelers).  Some sections are already completed, but it will probably be 2010 before the whole job is complete.  Also, the section between Lake Charles, LA and the Texas state line is being widened and rebuilt, so it should be much nicer as well.  Some of the sections between Beaumont, TX and Houston, TX are already rebuild and widened to 3 lanes and the rest of that stretch is being worked on right now as well.  Eventually, all of it will be a nice 3-lane interstate between Lake Charles, LA and Houston, TX, but it will be years before all of the construction is completed.  Until then, there will be construction delays that, at times, delay your passage, sometimes for hours.  Good luck in everyone's travels.

We found going through downtown San Antonio even worse than getting thumped.  Entering San Antonio was like entering a giant octopus.  The roads were like tentacles that went around and around, with massive and frequent lane changes, sometimes across 6 lanes, in order to stay on route.  Ramps intersecting with ramps, it just made you dizzy.  I was glued to the voice, "Rosy" on our Garmin as I made lane change after lane change following her constant instructions.  18 wheelers and speedy sports cars on all sides of us whizzing around.  Rosy did a great job and got us to our downtown campground.  But when we got out of the coach we could hardly make it to the office, our knees were shaking so bad.  ;D

IN this case we HAD to go through San Antonio because of our CG reservations.  And truth be said, we loved the next 4 days walking around the Riverwalk and enjoying other downtown amenities.

But we will never choose to pass through San Antonio if we can work our way around it.

I have to agree with irvsiegel about I-10.  I left Palm Bay, FL on Nov. 14, 2006, traveling west to Prescott Valley, AZ, arriving Nov. 19, 2006, with a 34' class A and toad, (Honda CRV) total 55'.  Very serious road to travel in Louisiana. The expansion joints on the highway were terrible, bouncing us, and everything in the mh around.  We held the speed to between 40 -50 mph.  While in the construction zones, (and there were many, and some miles long) the lanes were very narrow, with Jersey barriers on the right side, and 18 wheelers blowing by on the left.  My co-pilot (wife) was very nervous seeing nothing but the Jersey barriers.  I'm sure when the widening of the highway is complete, it will be a joy to travel.  However, in the future, I won't be using I-10 until after it's improved.  I-20 sounds like a good alternate.

Don,

I10 has been a pain since we started RVing 10 years ago! No matter how much they work on it the road never gets better. Unfortunately the hurricanes of the past couple of years certainly haven't helped.

How are things in Branford? We used to live in Vernon. Worked with a guy that lived in Branford.

We took it to San Anton then 35 to Corpus---Suggest you take the furtherest outer loop around SA ( i think it was 1306 ) The 10 and 410 was under construction, and the lanes were narrow.===Be prepared for some nasty cross winds between El Paso and Las Cruis.---Also desel at exit 27 in tx just outside of El Paso was the best price.---Stand by for high prices until you get past SAnt.
Enjoy and Merry Xmas

We take the 1604 loop which is exit 587 off I10 according to SA2007. I've found that to be fairly easy to drive and it puts you back on I10 well north of San Antonio.

Jim Dick,
I knew that I'd cross paths with you again sometime.  I bought my 34' Tiffin Allegro Bay in May 2006, from Van's RV in So. Windsor, Ct.  You gave me the RV tour, and told me to go to this forum for all kinds of info.  MH is now being stored in Prescott Valley, AZ.  Hope to get to "The Rally" in Redmond, OR in July.  Maybe we'll get an eyeball on each other.
Bye for now, C U later.

Jim Dick,
Sorry, I forgot to tell you how things are in Branford.  No snow yet, temps in the 30's - 40's.  Today is cloudy, and we're waiting for the storm to hit here, the one that hit Denver three days ago.  Forecast is for rain only.

Hi Don,

Not sure if I should admit I gave you the tour! ;D ;D I have a hard time remembering names but faces I almost never forget. Glad to see you made it to the forum. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. We left CT the first part of November and will spend the winter at our place in Florida. Hope to get out to AZ next winter if the economy settles down.

CT never did get the snow many other states did but sometimes it fooled us. I don't miss it at all! I was just printing some photos I had taken on our last trip to AZ and Moab, UT yesterday and wishing I could be out there. Keep in touch and if you have any problems let me know. I know the service manager. ;D ;D ;D

Last week we made the trip on I-10 from Florida to Kerrville, TX (an hour west of San Antonio).  Houston and San Antonio were both a challenge due to construction and massive amounts of traffic.  There is also construction in the western part of LA with narrow lanes.  The replacement for the I-10 bridge span that a hurricane wiped out just opened up a few days ago so that takes care of an east-bound headache in the Florida panhandle.

To sum it up, once you hit San Antonio, it is more intense driving until you get through Louisiana.

Methinks I10 isn't as bad as some of you are making out.  Louisiana has and will always have worst roads than the surrounding states because of the aforementioned graft of the political machine running the place.  They make the Mafia look like the Boy Scouts.

But I-10 through Texas isn't that bad.  I agree with the Loop 1604 bypass of San Antonio.  If that isn't doable, take I410 north rather than I10 through San Antonio.  There are confusing spots, but  then there are some really good Margaritas in and near the River Walk.  There's a bar in the Menger Hotel where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders that serves the best.  Since you're in an RV you probably won't be staying in one of the haunted rooms of the hotel.  Captain Richard King died there and has been seen periodically ever since, just one of the ghosts.

While Kerrville has some nice restaurants, a few miles north Fredericksburg has a bunch, especially German ones.  It also has some nice RV parks.

The construction on I-10 on the west side of Houston can be confusing but usually doesn't slow things down--IF you avoid rush hour.  I came to work this morning from the RV park in Brookshire at 75-80 mph this morning.

A new Flying J opened in Brookshire October 25th and has the cheapest diesel I've found (ULSD).

It took the advent of casino gambling to make Texans go willingly into Louisiana.  Texans, you see, are the natural prey of the unformed Louisiana revenue collectors, ones hired by that corrupt political machine.  Violate no traffic laws in Louisiana.  If stopped by a revenue collector, tell him you are going to/from a casino.  Some years back a Texas highway patrolman was sent to Louisiana to pick up a prisoner.  It took us almost a month to get the highway patrolman out of a Louisiana jail, and we never got the prisoner.  It's a different world there.  I blame it on the habit of eating crawdads.

And those of you complaining about the expansion strips of I-10--Have you ever been near Detroit? ;)
