winding spring in awning arm

ok old timers, we have all done it.. anyone remember which direction to turn the awning arm to tighten the spring? I think it was counter clockwise, but my memory is getting feeble, lol is that correct?
 
Wouldn't it depend which side of the RV the awning is on and from which side of the tube you're winding from?  Though now that I re-read your question perhaps you are talking only about the main awning as opposed to slide toppers, wherein the awning would always be on the same side and I assume most of them "rewind" from the same side.  Forgive my ignorance on the subject as this is not something I've done before, though I do need to.  My thoughts were that the spring should be wound opposite the way the tube rolls when the slide is opening, so you have tension.  My plan was to retract it, then wind the spring to only the minimum amount of tension necessary to keep it rolled up.
