Hi, from a newbie,

I'm looking for some advice from all you experienced Rv'ers on a tow vehicle for our 2002 Jayco Kiwi 23B.  We have towed it to our property in the mountains of upstate NY with our 2002 Jeep Liberty and the trailer is now in storage. We camped on our property for several years and are now looking forward to the open road.  We plan to go cross country to visit the National Parks and we have looked at a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab TRX Off-Road package with a 5.7L Hemi.  They are offering some awesome deals on the 2006 leftovers. The GVWR on the Jayco 23B is 4950 and we believe the Dodge Ram 1500 should be capable of handling the hybrid.  Our concern would be the mountain passes in the Rockies. The Dodge brochure lists the towing capacity at over 8000 lbs.  Any suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello Tilly,

I have a 2005 Dodge Quad cab with the 5.7 Hemi and we have pulled a 6120 lbs travel trailer (loaded weight) in the mountains out west.  If your Jayco in in the 5000 lbs loaded range you will not have any trouble pulling it with the truck you outlined.  If your trailer has been parked for several years, be sure to get the trailer wheel bearings repacked, check the condition of the trailer tires and brakes too.  Tires older than 4 years should probably be replaced even if they look good.

Good Luck with your trip.

To tow that Jayco in the mountain west you will need a tow vehicle with a tow rating of at least 6200 lbs.    Any of the Dodge QC  5.7L V8s will haul that and more.  You are good to go.
