Prayers needed
« on: October 30, 2015, 10:15:34 PM »
Thank you Gary. Unfortunately I may not be in the market for another coach now. We got some very bad news yesterday afternoon. My DW was diagnosed with stage lll ovarian cancer, they will operate Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. We thought it was something completely different, we are still in shock.

I'm very sorry to hear that.  One of my daughters was diagnosed with stage lll ovarian cancer 4 years ago.  She has been through two rounds of chemo since her surgery and is doing quite well.  Hopefully your wife's surgery will go smoothly and the two of you will be out enjoying the RV lifestyle before long.  Gary

Sorry to hear that, but let me offer some encouragement. My wife has been successfully battling stage IV breast cancer for seven years now and we still need a largely normal lifestyle. She still gets regular chemo and it's a constant burden, but not the end. You and your DW will come through this.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I will know how bad it really is Monday afternoon after the surgery I guess. I did find and was dealing on a 98 Daybreak 3130, but will wait now to see what the out come is. The Dr. did tell us survival rate is only 35%. It will need tires, but the coach is really clean other wise. I'll find another when this is past us hopefully. My wife is several years younger than I, and is healthy other than this. Maybe she'll pull through, but the Dr. wasn't to encouraging.

Thanks guys. She had the surgery Monday, much worse than the Dr. thought. They did a full hysterectomy. They removed a 5" cancer with the ovarys, appendices had a cancer tumor, and the small bowel had a cancer. She still has 2  cancer nonoperatable tumors,  and some other spots that may be cancer. We won't know what treatment is going to or where it will be for a few more days.  We may have to travel for treatment. Prayers needed.

So sorry to hear that. Prayers and hugs sent.

Identify a treatment center that is highly rated by the NIH for ovarian and bowel cancers and take her there. I think Sloan-Kettering is one of the best in that specialty, but there are highly rated cancer centers in each part of the country and the care will be superior there, as well as providing support and info to the family.. Moffitt in Florida, Anderson in Texas, Johns Hopkins in Maryland, Cleveland Clinic, etc.

Thank you all so much!! I really appreciate all the prayers. The report from the pathologist hasn't came back yet, so they don't really know what we're dealing with yet. The cervical cancer can't be removed, at least by the Dr.s here. I had a really bad feeling about the out come. Her gynecologist has been treating her for 3 months for problems with the uterus, those tests came back cancer free. She finally went to our regular Dr. he is the one that ordered the cat scan and found the cancers a week ago Wednesday, Thursday we seen a cancer Dr. and Monday was  the surgery. They were able to reconstruct the bowel so she doesn't have to have a bag. She was up walking Tuesday afternoon, she's a lot tougher than I am.

Thank you all so much. Charlie

Found out today, there is only 1 kind, bowel cancer, that has spread to other organs. The cancer Dr. that did the surgery only does ovarian cancer, so we will have another Dr. our first appt, is next Wednesday, then Thursday to get the staples out. She had another cat scan done today, don't have a clue why. At least she is in less pain now, than before the surgery. Thanks for all the prayers. She is very positive and says GOD will make her heal.

Update.  Staples out tuesday, 2 holes that didn't heal, that has to be stuffed with gauze 2 times a day. I got so light headed when the DR. was doing that I almost passed out. I can't do it, but at least I do help. My daughter-in-law is doing it for us, for now. I'm getting better and may be able to do it myself in a couple days. Seen the 2nd cancer DR. today, she is telling us that it is stage 4 colon cancer. They usually don't start patients on chemo until the openings in the belly have healed but she said they may start the week after Thanksgiving. She is going to take Donnas case to the board to see if maybe there is a DR. in Chicago that thinks another surgery could take place to remove the pelvic cancer if it responds to the chemo. It will have to shrink some before that can happen. Guess we'll know more in a couple weeks.

Friday 1:45
Just found out they will put the chemo port in Wednesday morning at 6:15 AM. , and start chemo the week after Thanksgiving.

Thank you so much for all the prayers, my wife says she knows they do help.

Update..  Well I was able to bring myself to start packing the holes left from surgery. One is healed up and the larger one is doing fine, healing nicely. She had a chemo port put in a week ago Wednesday. The Dr. gave her the OK to go back to work part time, so she has been doing 4 hr days since last Friday. I believe going back to work has helped her. She's getting stronger each day, and it's keeping her mind occupied. The reports came back from the pathology and they have decided what kind of chemo she has to have. The insurance co has given the OK so we will start chemo next Wednesday. The nurse told me yesterday to bring some snacks because we will be there all day. Thanks for all the prayers, she remains very positive, saying god will see us through this. If the chemo works and shrinks the cancers she has left then we will go to Chicago or Cincinnati for another surgery.

Thanks again for all the prayers Charlie.

Donna, I prayed this before your surgery and now once again. . .

For Health of Body and Soul

"May God the Father bless † you,
God the Son heal you,
God the Holy Spirit give you strength.
May God the holy and undivided Trinity
guard your body,
save your soul,
and bring you safely to his heavenly country;
where he lives and reigns for ever and ever."
Amen.

We had a misdiagnosis and we then went from NM to MD Anderson in Texas for the right 2nd opinion for my wife Bev. . .unfortunately, we needed to have gone there first. But they bought us precious time.

Positive thinking is the best medicine for a full recovery.
As a cancer survivor myself, I can attest to that statement.

On a very positive note, just look at the news surrounding former President Jimmy Carter, who now has been told, his brain cancer is totally gone.  I'm sure his positive attitude and religious beliefs had a lot to do with this outcome!

Also look at Maryland Governor, Larry Hogan. People wrote him off as soon as he announced he had late stage 3 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He announced it June 22nd. On November 16th, he announced he was cancer free. Governor Hogan has beliefs similar to President Carter. Tell her we're still praying for her and know we are praying for you also to have the strength to deal with this.

UPDATE  Thanks again for all the prayers. Today was an all day chemo day. The very first drug they administered made her really sick and caused major back pain, so they had to stop. The rest of the drugs were OK and the one she has to take is administered by a pump. It has to run 48 hours then be removed. They will teach me how to remove the pump Friday as the holidays are coming and they will be closed on pump removal day. Friday she has another cat scan to see how much the cancers have grown since the last one, and get a base line to see if the chemo is going to work. The chemo that made her sick was to be administered once a week, then the others will be every other week, 4 different types. The Dr. has to resubmit a different chemo to the insurance co before she can start the replacement.

UPDATE  Went to the Dr. today. The cat scan showed the cancers have grown since the last one before surgery but not by much. She said we won't have another cat scan till after the 4th treatment. The replacement chemo has been approved by the insurance co and will be given with the others starting next Wednesday.  So she'll have a treatment every other week. It takes about a week after treatment before she starts feeling better. They did find a nausea medicine that works much better for her, but she has to take it every 4hrs.

Thank you so much for all the prayers, Charlie

UPDATE   Second round of chemo went much better. By the time she was ready to get round two she felt really good. The replacement chemo is more expensive but doesn't make her as sick. We were able to make Christmas dinner at my sons house, and were able to stay about 5 hours before she was ready to go home. Chemo day is Wednesday and she feels pretty good on Thurs, but Fri and Sat are her worst days, she feels pretty good today. She only had to take the nausea medicine thru Sat afternoon this time. She has went back to work, Dr. approved 4 to 5 hour days for her. Keeping her occupied is a good thing I believe.

THANK YOU for all the prayers, we do BELIEVE they are helping me and her.

Thanks for all the Prayers.

She has had the 3rd treatment and is doing better quicker each time. Finally getting some strength back from the surgery. She did have a reaction to the new chemo, face was drying out then she started breaking out. The Dr. gave her some meds for that. Winter finally came and she's having a terrible time  with touching things cold, can't drink cold water ect. She said it feels like frost bite when she forgets the gloves. Can't even put her hands in cold water, but that only lasts for about a week after treatment. I think after one more treatment we'll find out if the chemo is working. She says if it isn't working the lord don't want it to and she'll quite taking the chemo. Not what I wanted to hear, but I'll respect her decision.

Thanks again Charlie

I went through this exact same thing with my mother. The sensitivity to the cold is a tough side effect. Just battle through it. The treatments should get a bit easier each time. I know it is a tough thing to watch but stay strong for her... She needs you.

Praying for peace and healing for you, your wife, and the entire affected family.  Life here on earth certainly does have its speed bumps and blind curves sometimes (not to go too far into the driving metaphors ;)) but you will make it through this!  It's okay to feel down sometimes too, so don't beat yourself up for that either.  ;)

Sorry, I just saw this.  Many late prayers.

FWIW.  After 40+ years of chronic ulcerative colitis, I had a total bowel / rectum removal 4 years ago.  This was in small part to proactively eliminate possibility of colon cancer and in large part to fix the 10+ BM's a day and IBS.  After 4 years, I still thank God daily.  I do have a "bag", but it is a true blessing.  I now go on MY schedule 3 times a day (empty bag) with no "accidents".  If this is suggested, do not fear!!  It eliminates many problems.  I find it very easy to "care for".  It is discreet.  Odors are not really an issue with filtered bags.  I wish I had done it 5 years sooner!

If you have questions, please feel free to PM.  It sounds like a much bigger deal than it is.

I do wish for the best outcome.  Some day, I know cancer will be a thing of the past and I hope that day comes soon.

Regarding "the truth about cancer" link previously, I clicked on it and I went to a website that wanted me to enter my name and email to get FREE, the truth about cancer.

If it is REALLY free, why isn't the TRUTH displayed to everyone who clicks on the link?

So, Tell me the TRUTH.  Why is my name and email needed?

Gotta be the same CRAP gimmick as coffee enemas and Laetrile in Mexico.

I don't buy it for 1 minute.

By the way, I'm a 14 year cancer survivor!

92GA: All the best to you and your wife.

75sling:
Congratulations on being a cancer survivor.:)

Perhaps a clarification is necessary to my original post. My intent was to offer support to GA92 and to whomever else might be impacted by cancer,  possibly enlighten others, and potentially save a life,  nothing more or less.  My intent is not and was not to engage in a dialogue or debate about cancer treatment options.  This simply isn't the appropriate thread or forum, imho.

In my particular case, I needed information on the subject of cancer and posted a (general) link that I found helpful.
The person that I was referred to,Ty Bollinger, documents his investigative journey to discover why so many of his family members were diagnosed and ultimately passed away due to cancer, and what if anything could have possibly saved them.   Ty interviewed (and video taped), many health care professionals across the globe, many that are M.D.'s and oncologists who have moved away from the medical model and are professing more effective treatment options.

I personally found the information a means to gain valuable information via links to numerous interview videos, conferences, etc., and a network that I would not have otherwise have even known about.  The information was extensive, highly thought provoking and stimulating, intellectually challenging, haven taken me several weeks to view and process.
I am so glad that I did!!!  However, if you are uncomfortable in providing your contact info., that is your decision to make.  For those interested, I am almost certain that his work can be accessed though different keyword searches online or YouTube without entering a name or email.

I think that folks have a right to ALL information, the right to determine what they deem valid and reliable, and the right to choose what is best for their personal situation.

Charlie -- I'm in mid battle myself with stage 4 metastatic melanoma, spread into my lungs, but I'm hanging on for two years now... which means your bride and I, and anyone like us who keeps enjoying life all belong to the heroic group called Survivors.  We may or may not ever be cured, but we're living and enjoying anything we do.

UPDATE
Many thanks to those who pray for my wife and I. We did get some good news last week before our chemo treatment. Her cancer markers have went down from 23. something to 2.03 so the Dr. says the treatment is working. She has scheduled another cat scan for the 22nd after her next treatment. If the tumors have reduced, she will contact the Drs. in Chicago to see what they think about doing another surgery. She has been doing pretty well, lately, not so sick, and seems to bounce back much quicker. The coldness side effects however are getting worse, and we have had a very cold spell for a couple weeks. She can't touch or drink anything cold, then it has to be through a straw. Can't drink water from the refrigerator from a glass as her lips burn like they have frost bite. She has been back to work for a while now and does put in 8 hrs most days. Going back to work has helped her stay strong, I believe. I was against it at first, but she was right. Good thing she likes chicken soup, because that's about all she can keep down the first couple days after chemo.

Thanks again Charlie.

UPDATE

Went to the Dr. last week before the chemo treatment. We got some good news and some bad news from the last cat scan. The good news is the markers continue to stay low, and the cancer on the diaphragm is almost gone, the cancer in the pelvic area is about 1/2 the size it was when we started. The bad news, after 5 Dr.s looked at the cat scan they all agreed, she is NOT a candidate for surgery, too risky. She was very disappointed with that news, she was so looking forward to having the surgery to remove that pelvic cancer.   She does have a spot on her back bone now that wasn't found before. She had a pet scan yesterday, whole body, we won't know about that till the next chemo treatment. Side affects starting to show up now. Starting to loose hair, and her skin is real rough, cracking even though she is using the cremes prescribed. She's getting weaker all the time now. I think she's thinking about taking a break from the treaments, she's going to ask the Dr. about that when we get the results from the pet scan.

Thanks for all the prayers Charlie

she's thinking about taking a break from the treatments

Personally I would not do that unless the doctors are very positive about it, the reason being that research now shows timing is extremely important with chemotherapy.  Breaking that timing could reduce the efficacy of the drugs and, lousy as it is, you want to do everything possible to get better.  We all want to see her become a Survivor!

UPDATE

The 10th treatment today, the DR says next ones will only be 2 chemos instead of 4. Starting to have dangerous platelets, and she is not bouncing back so well now. Also having trouble with her eyes now, not a good thing because she has always had poor eyes. Hair is thinning badly and breaking off, what she does have.  She will leave her on this dose unless the markers start climbing. Still not a candidate for another surgery at this time. She is pretty much pain free at this time so that is great.

Thanks for all the prayers Charlie

Does your wife have a wig?  We bought mine before I started chemo and I never had to wear it for that.  We donated my mother-in-law's wigs to the American Cancer Society.  Maybe getting one and having it styled, along with a manicure and maybe a nice new dress (or whatever) might cheer her up.  I'm glad the pain is less.

UPDATE

Thank You all so much for helping me with prayers. The Lord has listened to us. The latest cat scan revealed the pelvic cancer has reduced from 4 cm to 1.1 cm, some of the other cancer spots can't  be found now. The cancer on her spine hasn't reduced, but it hasn't grown or spread. The DR. has contacted the DRs. at the Mayo clinic and they as a panel agreed with her treatment. No longer a candidate for surgery because of the spine cancer, but they don't want hit with radiation at this time. They have reduced the chemo from 4 different types to just 1. It is still a very aggressive chemo, but is required because of the aggressive type of cancer she has, and will be on this treatment the rest of her life. They won't put her back on the other chemos unless the cancer markers start to climb again. Next cat scan in 3 months.

We did get some bad news this week, her brother which has been battling cancer too is losing the fight, and only has a few days to a few weeks. The Dr told his wife to contact hospice, to get a place ready for him.

Thanks again Charlie.

UPDATE

Donna has been on a maintenance dose of chemo now for 6 weeks. The side affects of this chemo is minimal. She is feeling much better now, and her strength is improving weekly. She has been able to resume taking care of her flowers she is so proud of. They bring her great joy, even though they take a lot of work. We made a difficult decision to sell our coach, since NO surgery is anticipated to remove the cancer she has left. We can't travel since she will be on chemo the rest of her life. No sense in just letting it sit. A young family purchased it, and picked it up Monday evening. I'll probably hang around on the site to help others if I can.

Thanks to all of you that have prayed for us, we do believe those prayers were answered. Her hair has stopped falling out and she does have some new growth. It is coming in darker than it was before, and maybe she'll get to where she can color it again. That would make her happy. The next cat scan  will be in a few weeks. The last one showed the spine cancer has not progressed and the pelvic cancer has reduced to 1.1 cm down from 4 cm.

Thanks again Charlie.

Charlie, thanks for the update and prayers continue for you and Donna.  I'm sure it was bittersweet to see the MH drive away, but it sounds like it will have a good home with that young family... maybe new to RVing?

Hopefully my wife wouldn't kill me for mentioning this ;) but you mentioned hair color so I want to suggest what she uses.  It's called Light Mountain Natural Hair Color and is a henna product.  Henna is plant based and widely used by women in Asian & Middle Eastern countries.  The reason I suggest it for your wife is because henna is completely natural with no chemicals or other stuff that could be harsh on her scalp or newly grown hair.  The Light Mountain website has a lot of good information, product descriptions, and application videos.  I buy my wife's supply on Amazon in 3-packs for ~$15 which I think is pretty cheap!

Update

She is done with radiation. Found out today it didn't work and the bone is deteriorating. That's what is causing the pain now. Her cancer markers have increased since the radiation and have doubled again in the last two weeks. No treatment today because they are going back to a stronger chemo and have to have it approved by insurance before starting. They are wanting to inject some cement to where the bone has deteriorated to see if they can relieve some of her pain. Dr. said if we don't do something, she may not be able to walk in the near future.

I'm very sorry to hear that news, and I hope that she is able to get some relief from the pain.  Quality of life day-to-day becomes very important at times like this.  Prayer inbound!

UPDATE

News not so good. Ever since the radiation she has been going down hill. She was in the hospital most of Dec. and the Dr there said we need to look into hospice. She continues to get chemo, but it isn't doing much if anything. She has lost over 70 lbs now and is skin and bones, getting very weak. She is still trying to work but only makes it about 3 days a week. She's such a bull head, but she knows if she don't push, she will lay here and die. She hasn't driven since Nov. but i take her and pick her up, when ever she calls. The pain is so great now that they have have her on morifine tablets and I give her some liquid morifine when she needs it, only a couple times a day. It's a terrible thing to see some one wither a way like this, but I'm going to take care of her till the end. She's not going to hospice, but I'll probably need some help in house. I'm having a temp wheel chair ramp installed in the garage so I can get her the Drs. I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, much appreciated.

You're a good man, Charlie.  Stay strong.  Remember to take care of yourself mentally and physically as well as caring for Donna.

You probably know that hospice can come to your home - they have a world of practical experience helping folks deal with very difficult and unfamiliar circumstances.  They're very helpful.

Unfortunately I have been involved with hospice for 3 of our elderly over the last 5 months. FIL, mom and aunt. All passed comfortably while under hospice care. Each one of them declared that they were ready to "go home" and home they went. Hospice is a great organization to help when end of life is imminent.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this.

Been there, 3+ year battle and did what you are doing. However, after the best of care that I and our dear neighbor Valerie, a home assistant with Ambercare Hospice in Belén NM could give from June after we returned again from MD Anderson (Love those people and place,) I needed to make it more easier for her.

After Labor Day I knew she wanted to die at home and i wanted her comfortable. Fentanyl worked for her, she refused all morphine. Ambercare Hospice sent their "angels" into our home, our animals could give her the love and presence she needed and a dear friend who worked in Special Ed in Gallup took a week of sick leave to be with her 'sick" sister in Christ. I was with Bev from 2 AM chating  until I drove to the airport to get Bp Bill who flew back from Africa to be with us. She was gone when we pulled into the driveway, home with her friend Jesus and her parents. . .   Hospice is a gift from God originally started by churches. . .

You and your wife remain in our prayers. I went through several years of radiation in different areas, I still have problems from the radiation even though the cancer is in remission. I say I am a survivor and was blessed by God to still be here. Don't give up. I admire your tenacity to do what you are doing. I retired from a very good paying job to take care of my wife when she fell and broke both her legs. She is somewhat well now but still has a lot of pain in her legs. We both look at life as we are blessed to get up in the morning and continue to do the things we are able to do. Some day the things we do will become more and more limited but hang in there. It sure sounds like she is a fighter, God Bless you and her.

We had a consultation with the Dr. yesterday. I asked the Dr. what the difference is, the cancer taking her or shes starving to death. My wife an I have decided to quit taking the chemo that is making her so sick. The chemo is irritating her stomach so she can't eat without puking it right back up. She lost another 5 lbs last week. She doesn't have cancer of the stomach so she should be able to eat without getting sick. I have talked Donna into only working a few hours a day to see if her body will heal a bit. She don't want to quit working, because she says she needs the exercise, both body and mind. She told the Dr. she wasn't ready to give up, and the Dr. told her there are some new drugs approved but not used much yet. Donna said she wanted to try them as long as the didn't make her sick, so they are going to try something new. The cancer markers are on the rise again so they weren't working for her anyways. Guess we'll see what the side effects are on the new chemo as they will start it Monday.

Thanks for all the prayers, we sure need them.  Charlie.

Well she is doing better since the new chemo, still fighting the stomach irritation from the last chemo. Her older sister is getting married again and she wants to go. Sister is moving from the east coast to the Oregon west coast to marry a guy she's been chatting with for 6 years. So I just made a deal on another MH and will pick it up Sat so I can get it ready for the trip the end of May. She always wanted a coach with slides and I didn't, she got her way this time. The MH is the only way I can see for us to make the trip, just don't see how we could manage the airport terminals with her being so sick. This Dolphin is  pretty low mileage and a lot fancier than I'm used to. We have two weeks between treatments, and I think we can make the trip in that time.  I believe her cutting back on work hours has helped the most but she won't admit that. I've never been out west so it'll be something new for me too. I did go to Colorado a few times elk hunting, and Las Vegas gambling a time or two 40 years ago.

UPDATE

Well looks like there will be no trip to the west coast for us. Donna has taken another turn for the worse. She put up a hard fight but it was not meant to be. She decided a few weeks ago to stop all chemo, because the cancer was still growing and pinching off the colon. We put in for medical leave from her job and got it a couple weeks ago, too weak to go to work. She has been pretty much bed fast for the last 10 days, I had a hospital bed delivered 10 days ago because I was having a hard time getting her up to go to the bathroom. Her boss arranged for her to have a recliner that helped her get up at work, she had that chair delivered the same day they brought out the bed. She hasn't been able to use it for the last 5 days, she's in too much pain to sit up very long. She told me today she's ready to go. I talked with a hospice nurse last Friday, but told her we weren't ready, maybe I'll make the call tomorrow.

I'm newer to the board but have read a lot of you and Donna's journey. My DH's late wife fought a long battle with ovarian cancer. Her faith in the Lord was strong and she knew He trusted her to carry the burden. You are not alone in this journey and there are many of us, however far and unknowing we may be, that are here. DH said one of the hardest things was seeing her go through so much pain. All you can do is take one day at a time. You are strong enough... as difficult as some days may be. Prayed for you both.

This morning at 5:21 I lost my beloved wife, best friend, my rock of 35 years to cancer. The lord reached down and said pain no more my flower, and took her home. Hospice stepped in and helped me a lot after
I made the call. I don't know if I could have done it without them. I know she got better care here at home than any hospital would have provided. For others that may find themselves in this situation call hospice early, they are great.

So sorry to hear about the passing of your sweet wife. May the Lord bring you comfort in the days ahead. My DH also lost his late wife to cancer about 3 years ago. She was a believer and found peace in the Lord's will for her life. There are going to be good days ahead for you as you move forward and don't be afraid to embrace them. It sounds as if she loved life and would want you to do the same. Celebrate her life and let the Lord guide you as you find your new path.

I know she is missed but take comfort in knowing the Lord is taking perfect care of her. You are still in our prayers as you transition to a new life. May God give you comfort and hope in the future.
