It produces a ton of torque at low RPMs.  If they can mate it with a decent chassis it may give the entry level diesels a run for the money. 
 
From some discussions I've had elsewhere they start with the 8.1L Chevy Vortec Block, I assume Stroked and bored to get it to 8.8L  But it appears the major noticed difference SO FAR. is the exhaust manifold.  On the 8.1 it is a "Rear dump" and on the 8.8. Center dump..  But if that's the only difference it just might be a bolt in replacement.
 
The article states that it is a bolt in replacement for ChevyBB. With different manifolds a custom Y-pipe and moving some hoses and wiring may be needed to prevent melting.
