now I am feeling old
« on: January 23, 2016, 02:35:44 PM »
Just received a facebook post from a former coworker.  I recruited her just out of high school, trained and mentored her.

Just announced her retirement in two months.
I never get lost.  I just have unplanned adventures.

Happened to me too and I'm relatively young. A kid I mentored in HS and just after HS just announced his retirement sometime after March. How'd he get so old.

Just before I retired, I was sitting in the office with a colleague, whom I didn't know very well.  She said, "When did you graduate from dental school?" "1971," I replied. "Oh," she said, "before I was born." I told her, "You could have gone all day without saying that." "Sorry," she said,"I didn't realize I said that out loud."

In 1968 I was the YOUNGEST person ever to graduate Rose D Warrick High (By 3 months) and like you several of my calssmates are in the Great Grandparent status now..  Kind of scary .. I'm just a grandparent, got well over a decade before "Grand" can be added, likely 2 decades give or take a couple years.

They were still using cast iron, cartoon bomb looking, kerosine lamps, to mark road work/hazards when I started driving. The flashing lights on saw horses came out a little later and then the barrels with the flashing lights followed.

I was just reminiscing with my wife about reading Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedias when I was little and couldn't play outside due to weather. A kid today wouldn't even know what that is. Online encyclopedias aren't the same. You can't really leaf through the individual volumes and read about Zanzibar followed by zymurgy.

We had Funk and Wagnalls. Dad bought them a volume a week at Safeway.

I saw a cartoon a few years back that showed a teenager looking at a set of Encyclopedia Britannica. He says to his friend, "Dude, somebody printed the whole thing out!"

Your post reminds me of the time back in 1963 when I was sold a set of Grolier World Books by a door-to-door salesman for about $350 (which I could not really afford).  My thought was that I was buying them for my son who was 3 weeks old at the time (as my wife so forcefully reminded me).  But you know what - all four of my kids delighted in reading those books over and over through the years.  In fact the youngest one has them at his house now and I keep reminding my wife that my 'investment' may not have so stupid afterall.  Of course, those kids didn't have computers, smart phones (or even cell phones) to claim their attention.

Maybe this is why our generation seems to know more than the inter web kids. We had  encyclopedias that absorbed us with interesting and useful things instead of an information superhighway that just seems to entertain with quite a bit of useless shite. Didn't have no steenkin popups and such.

The term "Old" shifts as we get older.   When we are 40, 60 seems old,  when 60, 80 seems old,  now at 80+, 90 seems old.

I've got a poster hanging in my office showing a man with a "ripped" or chiseled body, holding a dumbbell in a gym whose face belies his age (seventy something). The quote at the bottom says "getting old ain't for wimps".

Old?  I'm a grandparent for the first time at 70
But my son is a first time father at 46!  Like wow!
I can't even imagine.  But he thinks he will make
a better father now then he would have younger.

Hope he is there for him.

He will never be able to afford retirement if he keeps that up. ;D I married late in life, inherited 4 (now 5) grand daughters. Boy, that has been an education but there's another story. The oldest is 15 so I could be a gg within ten years. One of my class mates was a great grandfather at 61, that's far too young. ::)

Sad really, he likely won't see them graduate. I am 67, no way I want to start a family. That is a job for younger people with a lot of energy and patience.

I didn't know emergency surgery had any age parameters. Our now 21 year old granddaughter had emergency surgery at 14!  ::) ;D

I just meant that I seem to have reached an age, after a very physically active and somewhat adventurous (not all sensible activities) life, where my physical ailments continue to pile one upon another in an ever growing list of problems that might need to be fixed surgically. Meant as a morbid joke.
