Got the RV out of storage today. After getting home and parked, while I was lowering the level jacks a semi-loud poof was heard near the stove area and a burning smell was present shortly after. I stopped the leveling process and inspected everything. Didn't find anything smoking so I continued to level the coach. Later on I found the refrig/conv 15 amp breaker tripped and it would not reset. Discovered that the smoke had escaped from the power converter. Where is the best place to look for a replacement and what amperage should I get? None of the blade fuses are blown on the converter, so I am assuming the converter went belly-up. I had to stop the removal because I got called out to work so I wanted to reach out to the forum members for any insight. Thanks!

P.S. Good thing I got called out, the OT will pay for a new box. ;)

Per the winnebago specs, the part number for the converter SHOULD be 123058-02-000.

Doing a bit of googling, I see that number comes up as this:

http://www.winnebagooutdoor.com/Parallax-Power-Supply-Electronic-Converter/dp/B00X6C6TJK

(cheaper) http://www.amazon.com/Parallax-Power-Supply-Converter-Charger/dp/B00HFRLYB0

I know there are a couple other reputable power converter brands out there...and HOPEFULLY, those more versed in such things will chime in.

Here's some options for you:

We have had a few threads about changing out the basic Winnie supplied converter/charger for a better three stage charger, search for battery charger.  There are also two links to two threads in our Winnebago and Chassis Resources thread near the top of this board.

Be hard to beat the price on this one.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/291550655444?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

One of the best around.

I know from nothing about converters but since I have the same coach as the OP and may have the future need to replace the converter it appears that in addition to a much lower price the Amazon listing also shows a couple of 30 amp fuses on the face whereas the Winnebago Outdoor listing converter does not have these fuses.  In addition to the price difference, would this make the Amazon converter a better buy?

I ordered a WFCO 9855 converter from bestconverter.com. http://www.bestconverter.com/WFCO-9855-55-Amp-Deckmount-Converter-Charger_p_43.html#.Vu3KK-IrKM8 . It is rated 10 amps higher than the OEM. Unit height was important since it is going back in the original place. Also got two new coach batteries since the ones in there started dropping volts fast soon after I removed the charger. I feel confident that the weak batteries (4yrs. old) contributed to the original converter smoking itself. The new converter should take better care of the batteries. Thanks for the replies!!

Opened up the original Parallax Power converter. It looks like the input side sustained the damaged with a smoked thermistor and a bad electrolytic filter capacitor. Ordered some new parts form Mouser Electronics. If that fixes it, I will have a nice bench 12Volt power supply.

Is it a switching or linear power supply?

Good question John. There is not a lot of circuitry inside and it looks like minimal output filtering so I am thinking its linear.

Well, the folks at BestConverter somehow didn't get my on-line order. When I contacted them for a tracking number, they persuaded me to get a Boondocker unit as they haven't had good luck with the WFCO models. Got it installed and in service so all is good in the RV. I also installed the replacement parts for the smoked unit. Put them in and the unit powered right up so now I have a nice 12 Volt 45Amp power supply. Naturally the wife said "What do you need that for?" Nothing right now but I'm sure it will come in handy someday.  8)

You can always use a 45 amp power supply, good job getting it fixed up.  Your 4 year-old batteries (unless they are high dollar premium) are near the end of their life span.  Consider replacing them with Lifeline AGMs.
