What is A "Deep Cycle" Battery?
« on: March 22, 2016, 02:26:16 PM »
This is the best end user article I've ever encountered regarding deep cycle batteries.

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/deep_cycle_battery

It was written by a marine electrician who has worked on everything from 18' runabouts to 200'+ ocean going yachts. For the reader here whenever you encounter the word marine, boat, boater, etc insert/think 'RV'. Some may find it a little lengthy but it covers everything for the end user.

Thanx........INTJohn

I've considered replacing the pair of Group 27 batteries with a pair of 6v "golf car" batteries, but I don't think I have quite enough height clearance for them in the step well where they sit. I'll have to take a tape and measure to be sure.

(I rarely boondock...or park anywhere that doesn't have at least a power hookup...but once in a while..........

If you have your heart set on good quality deep cycles, you can get them in the standard Group 27 size. The Trojan 27TMX, for example. The 6v golf car battery is just the most cost effective package of deep cycle available, largely because of the high production volumes.

Or get an AGM type 12v deep cycle in the Group 27 size. That has all the benefits of a GC2 and then some. For a price, of course.

Gary, I already have a pair of Group 27 deep cycle batteries., but the added capacity of a pair of 6v batteries has its appeal.

If you don't have the height for the GC2 size, do you have more length so that you could use a 29 or 31 size? I believe they are both 13" long vs 11.75 for a 27. A bit narrower too. The Group 29/30/31 size is near identical to a GC2 in amp-hour capacity.

There is a BCI case size chart at  http://www.submarineboat.com/bci_battery_group_size_chart.htm
