Campgrounds in Las Vegas

Planning a trip in August from LA to San Francisco via Grand Canyon, Page, Bryce, Zion and Yosemite. Have already had great help from here. Now looking for ideas please on where to stay for a quick look at Las Vegas while we're in the area. Is the KOA campground at Circus Circus a good option? Could we park the RV somewhere and have a night or two of luxury? Or are there campgrounds within reasonable reach by public transport... We're not interested in gambling just the spectacle.

Las Vegas has many campgrounds,  They are thicker than flies in some areas.  If you have a membership there is a Thousand Trails, I spent a month there between December and Feb just past.  Main Street Casino has a camp ground, bit hard to find but call the hotel and ask for reservations.  It is next to the freeway, fire department and bus terminal so it is noisy but a security guard will "Walk" you back to your rig at night.

Circus Circus KOA will Keep On Adding to your bill if you wish,  Expensive, as is the Oasis park on the south side of town, but it is right on the strip. (oasis is south end of the strip)  Oasis has shuttles into town by the way saves unhooking your towed.

If your rig is new and in good condition there are other palces to stay.

But if it's just for one or two night I would suggest Oasis, KOA or Main Street,  the last is aroung 20/night the others can be as high as 60 depending on the night.

Oh, if you are a member there is  MOOSE lodge as well.. I'd not be surprised to find an ELK too.

And many of the casionos have RV parks, though last year when I got there in January I found most of them full up.

Add several campgrounds down on Boulder Highway. There's 2 RV parks at Sam's Town. We prefer these when they have space available. Arizona Charlie's is ok for a night or 2...spaces very close together. And next to Arizona Charlie's, between it and TT is another campground that looks fine...I think it used to be the KOA? We could look over the fence and ditch at it from Arizona Charlie's and it had lots of empty spaces and the sites weren't real close together.

Many of the casinos have big, open parking lots where you could park overnight if you're not interested in hookups.

As much as I loathe Las Vegas, I must admit that the Destiny Oasis CG is reasonably serviced and is convenient to the Strip via its shuttle.  They also have non-free wifi, a good CG store, and primo private shower rooms.

OH yes, those showers at the Oasis were great.  The Wi-Fi was so-so (might be my computer) seemed to reset the connection a lot.  But I was only there two nights.

They have two classes of sites, pull throughs are at least sixty feet long, very roomy,  back in's are at least 40 foot deep, Sites around the wall are back in,  They also have "Dual pull throughs" if you get into one of these your front view may be the back of the rig behind you,  car goes alongside the rig.    NOTE: If you are a member of any RPI park, and have an RPI or selected other memberships, you can use the back in or front to back sites for only 12 bucks a night (plus optional wi-fi)

Camp store is stocked by camping world

They have a nice little snack bar/restaurant as well, Decent food from when I was there

  I don't know if it's changed any over the years, but when we stayed at the KOA at Circus Circus, we were very disappointed.  The campground itself is pretty indistinguishable from an ordinary parking lot, but with hookups.  I rate it a zero for ambiance.  Also, while we were there the campground lost power, so everything in our refrigerator got *very* hot, as did we until the power came back on.

  On our next trip to Las Vegas we got married at the Circus Circus, but we stayed in the hotel, not the KOA!

                                                                   

Well, till recently it was not a KOA (It was owned by the casino) yes it is a parking lot, but what do you do with your rig when you get to a campground.. DRIVE?  NO, you park.

And it has the advantage of you can walk to the Circus Circus, can't do that from oh, say Road Runner.

Still.. I'm not likely to stay there again,  I simply do not think it is the best for the money.  I found Oasis to be far far nicer and about the same price, I mean far far nicer,  I mean way nicer.

Even the air at Oasis smelled sweeter (And for good reason too)

But Last year when I was returning to Las Vegas from Quartzsite.. CC had one think other parks I knew of did not have... SPACE

So I stayed there... Today, I know of a lot more parks and thus will stay elsewhere

Oh, and while there take the TrendWest time share tour.  TrendWest is not scared of the fact you have an RV, and if you sign up at the right casino (In my case it was 4-queens on Freemont st) they give you "Casino cash" which turned into "Hard currency" when I played sixty of it in the slots,,, The other 20 went to waist. (That is spelled properly)

  I'm surprised that TrendWest is friendly to RVers.  With most of them, if you tell them that you own an RV and almost never stay in hotels, they back you off.  Probably the fact that they have RV parking has something to do with it.  Most timeshares don't have that.

  Best I ever did at a timeshare was $100 cash from the Jockey Club.  Once you've qualified for the money, that's the time to tell them you own an RV.  Another option is to tell them that you're refinancing your home, and your mortgage broker told you not to sign any paperwork for a loan for the next thirty days.

In Las Vegas it is highly recommended that you stay at an RV Park. As in any large metropolitan area, there will be safety and security concerns when motor homes are left unattended in areas generally open to the public. Even those casinos that say they will allow you to park free overnight in their lot cannot guarantee that they will provide the same kind of security as  you'd typically find at an RV Park.

Circus Circus has the only RV Park on the Strip. Sam's Town out on Boulder Highway has a nice RV Park and provides free daily transportation to the Strip. There are many RV Parks/campgrounds in Vegas. Prices vary depending on the amenities offered. However, only 5 casinos have RV Parks as a part of  their facility.

For sightseeing, the Las Vegas Monorail has an unlimited one-day pass that allows you to get off and on as many times as you want, The monorail runs from one end to the other of the 3+-mile famed Strip. Wear comfortable walking shoes and enjoy the larger-than-life themed resorts.

Thanks for all the posts.  I'm thinking of choosing either KOA at Circus Circus or Oasis because they both seem fairly close to the Strip.  Realise that KOA is just secure parking really but guess that is really all we need.  We will only be there for 2 nights and will have spent plenty of time in prettier spots and just need a base to leave the rv while we're looking round.

Despite that, probably favour Oasis for some grass and nice-looking pool.  Have seen elsewhere that there is noisy, building work nearby Oasis.  Does anyone know if this has finished yet?

When it comes to RV parking.... You are going to have a hard time finding a perttier spot in Vegas than Oasis

For 2 nights, either one is great.  I liked Oasis better but if anyone in LV is more expensive than KOA.. Theire it.

Still.. I am most deffently going back there under RPI next year.

If you need directions,  Oasis is off Blue Diamond Road (The road to Parahump) just, and I MEAN JUST, east of I-15 (Between I-15 and Las Vegas Bvld)  Can't miss it, when you get off going east get in the right lane RIGHT AWAY and you will natually get there

If your at the Oasis; make sure you keep your water hose off the ground. When I was there, ccame back from the strip and the trailer was covered black in ants. They had used the water hose to climb up on the trailer to get to the water coming off the AC. It was 115 that day and the little buggers were thristy.

I don't think you will need to worry about the ants at Oasis much longer since they are scheduled to be bulldozed in the not too distance future from what I understand.  IMHO it will be a good thing.  Too bad they weren't  gone before the Silverton.

Ron,

Your prejudicies are showing.  You're wrong about the Oasis.  It was great!  Remember we stayed there for four months and we've been in a lot worse places!  It has all the amenities, including swimming pools, putting green, a small store, a shuttle to and from the Strip, etc.  Just because you don't like the owners, doesn't mean others of us don't like it.  As to the ants, we've had those in lots of places so it has nothing to do with the Oasis.

Also, they won't be bulldozing the Oasis for at least five years.  When they realigned Windmill Lane to merge with Blue Diamond at the new overpass, they built a brand new entry road into the Oasis.

I get the distinct feling that Ron and the rest of us are talking about two different things.

Was/is there a casino/hotel called the Oasis? 

If so, that is NOT the campground down off Blue Diamond Hwy.  Though there are bulldozers next door putting up soon to fall down housing (All the junk they build now-a-days is "Soon to fall down", they just don't bulid 'em like they used to)

Nope Ron and you all are talking about the same thing the Oasis RV Park.  Was never favorbly impressed with their operation.

Ron's right on this one.    We are all talking about the Oasis RV Park off Blue Diamond (to my knowledge there is no Oasis Casino and/or hotel) - and some of us like the Oasis just fine while others like Ron do not.  To each his own, I always say.  ;D ;D

The construction mentioned above is for some high-priced condo towers being built behind the Oasis.  Eventually the Oasis will disappear to make way for more buildings, but the building downturn is happening here as well as other places so I don't believe that will be happening any time soon.  Quite a few condo projects have been cancelled over the past year.

By the way, for those who haven't been to Las Vegas for awhile, we were driving down Las Vegas Blvd. (The Strip to the unintiated) yesterday and I noticed there are new road name signs.  Windmill now is east of LV Blvd. and Blue Diamond is now west of LV Blvd.  The Oasis RV Park address is still Windmill, but technically you now enter off Blue Diamond.  This is a change that took place last fall when the new interchange at I-15 and Blue Diamond was finished.  On the west side of I-15 by the Silverton and the truck stop, the old Industrial Road is now called Frank Sinatra Drive.  The section of Frank Sinatra Drive south of Blue Diamond is being built where the old Silverton RV Park used to be located and it looks like it's almost finished.  Silverton and the state did a land swap to facilitate a road realignment and Silverton plans a new entertainment venue where the old Industrial Road used to be located.

I thought it was a very nice park, but then I had one of the high price sites.  I can understand if you are on one of the cheap sites nose to tail with another rig, not much view out the front windows

But then one of the first thigns the wife does when we park is close the curtains on said window. (Energy management don't you know)

John, that's the old road that might be described best as long and straight in from the drug store on the opposite corner at the light.  There's an entirely new entry road that goes straight south off the new Blue Diamond connector and then curves right or west about where that round end of the road used to be right before you entered the Oasis gate.  It's actually a pretty good access, even with the curve.  Plenty wide and long.  Also, coming from LV Blvd. there's a relatively long left-turn lane into the Oasis so you don't block traffic on Blue Diamond.

Another change is that the old two-lane Blue Diamond overpass is gone, as is the road from it that ended at a light at LV Blvd. across from the Bootlegger Bistro.  I have to say the new interchange with multiple lanes is far superior to the old one and will be even better once they tidy up with the last of the landscaping and take away all the cement barriers and orange cones on the west side of I-15.

Did you all see on TV the implosion of the Stardust the other night?  Really neat with fireworks off the top before the planned explosions in the building itself.

When we there last month I noticed all the construction and road name changes....Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin....we got lost trying to get to the In-and-Out.

We did watch the Stardust implosion. Also looked at something online about the "top 10" implosions in Las Vegas. I think it's kind of sad...the town is blowing up it's history. And look at all the street names that folks won't know what they're named after....Sands, Desert Inn, Tropicana (I'm betting they're next to implode).
