I once had a truck that would get a consistent 25-27 mpg on the highway.
It was a 99 Ford F-250 extended cab long bed. It had the 7.3 diesel with a 6 speed manual transmission. The key here is that it was a 2wd truck which made it very light and it also rode pretty low to the ground. On long road trips, I always short shifted under 1,500 rpm and ran 70 mph. It was nice going nearly 800 miles before I had to fill up.
I have a much bigger and heavier truck now and get happier than a kid that sees the ice cream truck whenever I manage to hit 15 mpg.
