Yellowstone 2016 Rally in Pictures
« on: May 16, 2016, 08:17:39 AM »
Folks who are here at the rally, and we have 22 couples attending, will be posting their favorite mammal, bird/waterfowl, landscape and general interest photos here this week. For those posting, let us know where (if you remember) you got your shot so others can swing through and maybe see what you saw.

We hope the rest of the Framily can live vicariously through them and enjoy YNP from afar.

Normally, the rally picture comes at the end, but to honor Steve Thum's toad, a 1926 Ford Model T, which will tour the park, we took it the first night!

Special thanks to Larry N (Larry Nussbaumer) who set up the shot.

Here are some pix from yesterday's meeting. First is Kim addressing the group with his "dog and pony show." Second is the group listening. Finally is Steve Thum's Model T without folks around it -- neat stuff.

The most interesting part of this conversation is that it was Betty Brewer who said at our first Moab Rally in 2011 that we just had to go to Yellowstone that year. We were there a week later. For two months.

And then did again. For two months, in 2013.

The rest is history.  8)

Being a bit beyond the use-your-cell-phone-to-take-a-picture-of-everything age, we missed our opportunity when one of our dogs helped a mom and son kill a mouse which had snuck into the bed of their pickup truck. The son was poking at it with a ski pole as we were walking by. 30 seconds later the mouse was in our dog's mouth, dead.

We then went on to look at some gysers. All in a day's work for Squid. (that's her name)

It was rainy and dreary today. With the snow melt and the rain, the rivers are really roaring. Kevin's knee was giving him fits this morning so we decided to go to the Lamar valley through Mammoth and Tower. Wow! We saw hundreds of bison (dozens of calves, one so new mom was still licking it off), 12 mountain sheep, 9 bears (really! - 2 single adults, 2 sows with a single cub each, and 1 sow with twins), around 100 elk and about the same number of pronghorn, 2 marmots, 3 owlets tucked into a cliff side nest, a sandhill crane (unexpected), and a bird we are pretty sure is a ptarmigan. Oh, and a wolf ran across the road immediately in front of us! Multi-colored with a radio collar. Most of the pictures are on a memory card and we didn't bring a computer to download them, but I did snap a few with the iPhone. Note the tiny flowers are definitely brightening up the meadows too.

On the way out Old Faithful this morning, a coyote was having trouble deciding how to cross the road.

At Biscuit Basin, the pools, including Mustard Spring we really colorful as the sun started peaking out.

The mountain blue bird was a little outside the lens length but was a blue as blue can be. They flit so much they are hard to catch.

I think we ran into that same raven last year.  It chased my mother-in-law around the Jeep trying to get her to share her sandwich. ;D

Thanks for sharing the pics guys.  We'll be heading out first thing in the morning so don't hog all of the wildlife pictures, save some for us.

For those reading along;

If I may speak for the group here, the pictures everyone is posting do not do justice to the experience of standing on the precipice overlooking a canyon, or along side a roaring valley stream, or driving through the wide open grassy plain with wildlife close and far. Being here in person is hard to explain in words. The pictures fall very short of the views. Its the combination of crisp mountain air, the clear morning sun, the sounds of the wildlife, and the shared awe of fellow travelers when you see one of the countless offerings YNP has to offer. The place is truly amazing.

YNP should be on everyone's bucket list.

On Tuesday, we wanted to be sure Steve and Dee Falchini got their bear, and we did well out towards Tower Falls and then towards Lamar Valley.

A momma black bear with two cubs, the cubs scampering up and down a tree while momma grubbed, then a black bear on a bison carcass.

Because it was lunch time, we found a kestrel working on some recently expired prairie rodent.

While everyone else has been wandering the park for shots of bear, bison, and gysers, we have been stuck at the campground for various reasons. But that didn't stop Diane from getting some cool wildlife pics of her own.

Enter the Fox!

That's just dandy! I got a picture of what I claimed was a coyote because of the long shot, angle, and light, and Christi and Jimmie Kay Fisher have been claiming all along it was a fox that ran between our cars the other day as we left the RV park.

And to add insult to injury, our coach in the background.

Great shots everyone.  All we saw Monday was half the parks population of buffalo.  We can share some buffalo shots if you like.  However I'm sure most of you have many of your own.  On Tuesday, we drove through the Lamar Valley to Cooke City and back.  Saw a few things that haven't been posted yet.  On the way, we saw a young eagle enjoying a morsel on the highway.  Didn't know what it was until it took off.  The feathers on it's head were just starting to turn white.  Unfortunately we only got one shot.  Coming back from Cooke City we saw some mountain goats that looked like white dots on the side of the mountain.  Maria used her new Nikon P610 which has an electronic zoom.  They're a bit fuzzy but identifiable.  The P610 has a 60x zoom and it really requires a tripod to use effectively at max range.  We also saw what we thought were two wolves which looked a lot like your Coyote Kim.  A bit later we got a few snaps of that black bear enjoying the remains of the carcass.  We finally spotted what appeared to be a young grizzly which made our day.  Other than that, a few elk and prong horns.  Pix to follow.

We have never seen the bison own the Mammoth area like Larry's pics indicate! The elk must have been torqued!

Not many pix for Thurs, since we were in the Bison jam for an hour 45, or so.

We thought we were near the front -- there were more out of sight ahead.

Bison passing us.

Finally near the front.

An anxious crowd awaits the eruption.

Finally...

We left at 6:00 am this morning to head to Lamar Valley and the wolf den that can be seen off Slough Road. It was a good thing we left so early since the two adults and three pups were pretty active for only 20 minutes after we got there. No pictures because they could only be seen well with spotting scopes.

One of the other advantages of getting on the road early is the mist that wreaths the river and thermal features. The first is the mist against the mountains while the second are just two little fumeroles by the side of the road. They are particularly visible at 33 degrees! The little one on the right also gave a deep drumming sound. I tried to capture it on my iPhone, but it was too low in frequency. It was too faint to hear if there had been any cars driving by.

On Tuesday we went to Mammoth and walked down the old army buildings and saw this bison laying between two of the buildings sunning itself. It was laying within a few feet of some children's toys  from the residents of that building. We drove around to the other side of the buildings and got a picture of the front and boy did that bison have a contented look.

I used to drive that pass every day delivering ice cream to Tower Falls.  An enjoyable drive!  But then we drove from Livingston and around the park and then home everyday an most was not that good!

We are the lucky ones.  We got a bonus few days at Grizzly.  Today Kim took Dee and I to the Grand Tetons.  What a magnificent trip.  Beauty beyond imagination.  A few pics from  our trip.  We also saw a black bear and a wolf!  Both were gone so fast no one got a picture.

Rally go-ers!

Who has a shot of Bullwinkle?

We are doing really well, but where's the moose?

Kim

It was probably too cold in Yellowstone.   ;)  After considerable effort, many miles on the Aerbus, what seemed like hundreds of signs warning of moose on the highways from Nova Scotia to the Northern reaches of the lower 48, we finally found her.  She's alive and doing well in Glacier National Park.  While walking to a water falls in the Many Glaciers area another hiker said a moose was in the water about 50 feet off the trail.  (who knew there were more than two entrances to Glacier?)  A young, maybe two year old, female enjoying some grass or whatever near the shore of Fishcap Lake.  Apparently we missed two more.  A mother and her baby sighted a few minutes earlier in the same location.
