axle maintenance

How often are you performing axle maintenance; specifically lube and checking the brakes?  We have Dexter torsion bar axles and it is entirely possible that the hubs are sealed and I wonder if we paid for essentially nothing.  The place where we bought our trailer and brought it back for one year maintenance said we should do it annually and/or every 3K miles. Can I stretch this out a little?

I inspect the brakes and inspect and repack the axle bearings annually.

Thanks for the replies.  I like the link to the chart and I think I can do most of the visual inspection myself.  We hope to put on more than the approximate 3,000 miles we did last year.
