Since it had been MANY years since we had driven around the Gaspe Peninsula, we decided to take the approximate 300 mile detour to Perce Rock on our way back from visiting kids & grandkids in Ottawa. It is an amazing trip, well chronicled in a few Trip reports contained in the forum's library.
However, anyone who is coming east should consider this as a must see. There are a few fairly short 12% to 15% grades, but they are not long enough to cause problem, you just need to take them at your own pace. There are campgrounds scattered throughout the whole coastline, and Quebecers make good use of them.
The views are spectacular, and for a lot of the drive, Highway 132 is wedged between the sea and the Appalachian Mountains, plus we saw several pods of whales while we were driving. For what it is worth, I specifically did not try to use my fleeting French, and found that where ever we stopped along the way, people spoke acceptable English.
