Help!  We have a 1997 GMC Sonoma 5 speed manual transmission truck. We want to tow behind our motor home. Can we flat tow?  Owners manual is not clear. If we can't flat tow, can we use a tow dolly?  The vehicle has rear wheel drive.

According to      http://www.remcoindustries.com/Towing/Store.php      which is the go to site, the truck requires a drive shaft disconnect to be towed 4 down OR dolly towed.  Either way, the rear wheels are on the ground.  If you search drive shaft disconnect, you should find more information.

Why would you need a drive shaft disconnect unit with a manual transmission?

Because on some manual transmissions the tail shaft (Output shaft) does NOT touch to oil because the oil level is below it and hence no lubrication.  If this is the case some folks leave the TOAD in neutral with the engine running for short distances.  The bad part about this is that the TOAD could run hot because the Prime Mover deflects the air flow.  Drive line disconnects are the way to go.
