Come See Yosemite, May 14-21, 2017
« on: September 27, 2016, 07:14:41 PM »
Steve & Dee and Jan & Olga are organizing a rally for our RV Forum Framily and friends to come explore the magnificence of Yosemite National Park.  Since it is nearly impossible to make reservations inside the park, especially for a group, we located an RV park about 20 miles from the north gate of the park.  There were not many parks to choose from to accommodate a group of our size.  Additionally, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the park is extremely crowded.  We chose these dates because we will avoid some of the crowds and the waterfalls are generally gushing at this time of year.  Yosemiteís waterfalls are spectacular.  This the first time we are organizing a rally, so please be patient with us.  Here is the information:

Place: Yosemite Pines RV Resort  www.yosemitepinesrv.com
Address: 20450 Old Hwy 120, Groveland, CA 95321
Telephone: 209-962-7690
Email: Yosemite@yosemitepinesrv.com
Reservations to be made by phone.  Identify as a member of the RV Forum, booking in Section B for those dates.

Rate structure is complex as they charge different rates for Pull Thru versus Back In sites.  They also charge different rates for weekdays versus weekends.  They offer a 15% discount for a 7 day reservation or if you are an Escapees member.  Otherwise, they offer a 10% discount for AAA, Good Sam or Seniors.  A full week reservation in a Back-In site including the 15% discount is $ 286.45 and in a Pull Thru site it is $ 323.85 for the week.  If you do something different, your rate will be determined when you call.  Also, these are the rates in affect now.  Your rate is determined at the time your reservation is made.  If you choose to wait and they implement a rate increase over the winter, you will be charged the new rate in affect at the time you make your reservation.  Since their cancellation fee is only $ 10 up to one week prior to arrival, I would suggest booking early to get this yearís rate, although rate increases are generally nominal.

About the sites: All sites are 50 amp, full hook ups.  They offer free WiFi, although generally not suited for streaming.  There is weak cell service at the campground.  Verizon is best.  They have a booster at the office.  They do not guarantee satellite service because of the trees.  When I stayed there, I had no trouble getting satellite, but itís hit and miss.
About the reservation process:  They prefer the reservations be made by phone so you can identify yourself as part of the RV Forum.  They take the first nightís fee as a deposit at the time of making the reservation.  They do not want to make site specific reservations, just by section (we are in section B).  There are both back in and pull thru sites in section B.  They have a somewhat limited number of sites to accommodate rigs over 40í.  Therefore, they want the ability to move people around so they donít have 30 footers in a 45 foot site.  They will accommodate requests to be next to someone specific in our group if you make that request at the time of booking.  They will lock your reservations together.  The campground map is on their website, but here is a link to it https://yosemitepinesrv.com/pdfs/map_resort.pdf  The upper left-hand lavender colored sites on the map is section B.  There is a large red B on the map.  The lavender color indicates full hook up 50 amp sites.

About the area:  The campground is located about 1 mile off CA SR 120, on Old Hwy 120.  About 2 miles past the town of Groveland, turn right on Old Hwy 120.  The small town of Groveland has stores, shopping, restaurants, fuel stations, car wash, etc.  There is a shuttle service (for a fee) that runs from the campground to all areas of the park.  Therefore, those not wanting to bring a tow vehicle can still enjoy the park.  There are also cabins on premises if someone wanted to come without an RV. There is a very small store and a deli on the premises.  I have not tried either, but they are there.  They can accept mail for those of you who may want to have mail sent to you.

Getting there: CA SR 120 can only be accessed from the west heading east.  Trying to travel from east to west on Hwy 120 is not accessible to RVís.  I would suggest using an RV friendly navigation system, or ask the park for recommended directions.  There is a significant 5 mile grade just before the town of Groveland.  It is a new road that was made to be gentler and to accommodate trucks and RVís.  The old road, called ďOld Priest GradeĒ still exists.  Regular navigation systems tell you to take that road, but it is clearly marked that vehicles over 7,500 lbs are not allowed on that road.  Otherwise, all roads are good highways and the high roads to the upper areas should just be opening at the time we are there.  They generally open in early May.  If we have a late, significant winter, some roads to parts of the park could still be closed, but that never seems to happen in California anymore.

I will attempt to keep up with an attendees list.  Once you have made a reservation, please let me know by replying on this page.  Since we wonít have site numbers, we will post your name, RV Forum handle, and your hometown.  If you donít want this information displayed on the attendees list, please let me know.  We look forward to seeing you in Yosemite!

Steve & Dee,

We plan on attending. We'll call for reservations tomorrow and confirm here. We are confirmed.

Great idea for a rally. We haven't been to Yosemite since the 80's when we lived in Vermont.

btw, I checked the Caltrans map for 45 ft Bus/Motorhome and RT 120 is OK for rigs over 40 ft coming from the west.

Ken:
I was specifically referring to westbound CA SR 120 off of US 395.  The route known as Tioga Pass.  I did not think rigs over 40ft were advised?  I personally would still not recommend that route.  JM2C.  So glad you are coming.

I went over Tioga Pass a few weeks ago, west to east.  I also would not recommend taking a large rig over this route.  The grade from US 395 to the summit is about 8 miles long and is very steep and twisty.  Going down it in a 27 ft. motorhome I was in first gear and riding the brakes to keep the engine RPMs below redline, and actually had the transmission shift out of low gear once to protect the engine.  Not fun.

Going westbound it would be a very long, steep uphill climb.

Steve

I should have been clear and said RT 120 from the west towards Groveland is OK for Motorhomes over 40 ft. I only posted this because Caltrans restricts over 40 ft motorhomes from some routes. I aiways check the Caltrans map when I'm driving in California off the Interstates.

RT 120 coming from the east through the park is noted on Caltrans that you should check with the park. I agree that is not a route I would take.

I clarified the original post.

We have never been to Yosemite so this sounds like great fun. Kevin and Pam will be there. I just made the reservation.

Any good suggestions for interesting places to stop on the way from Salt Lake City? Been to St. George, Death Valley, and Joshua Tree. Not interested in Vegas. We could take the week either before or after the forum.

We just arrived in Manila and the first thing I did was call and get our reservation, Amy suggested a pull thru due to the length of our "Tiny House".  See you in the spring.

Kevin and Pam, glad you can make it.  Yosemite is a pretty spectacular place, especially for people who have never been there.  As for what to do on the way, Lake Tahoe is a beautiful area if you haven't been there.  Also, the small town of Truckee, California is a nice stop.  The Museum of the Donner Party is located there.  If that interests you, those are a couple of places you could visit on the way.

Look forward to seeing you in Yosemite.

Thank You Steve and Dee to take care of organising this event. Also thank you to mention my name as organiser, (that is nice of you since I am doing nothing.). I just mentioned Yosemite to you and here we go. I love this park and this will be my second visit.

Gonna pencil this in on our trip calendar for next year which is still in the planning stage.

We're going to Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Arizona but haven't picked a departure date nor a route yet.

This sounds like a fun get together even though I've been to Yosemite about 30 times.

Two things are near the top of our RVing list:  Visiting Yosemite and attending an RV Forum rally.  Our youngest graduates HS right around that time this year, however, so we will have to put this one off.  Feel free to do it again in a year or two and count us in!  ;D

Looking forward to meeting old friends and new.

Chrystal and I were so looking forward to trying to fit this into our travel plans for 2017 but it looks like we won't be able to make it.

We will be neck deep into building our new shop and probably won't even be able to get the coach out and enjoy it until the latter half of the year.

We will be following along and hope to see a lot of pictures though so don't be stingy with them.  Yosemite NP is definitely on our list of places to visit and this would have been perfect to see it with a group of friends.

Despite an earlier post indicating that we would not be able to make this rally, Mary Ann called today and made reservations for us from May 12 to May 19. Just couldn't stay away!

We need to leave on the 19th in order to be in West Yellowstone on May 21 so we can start work at the Grizzly RV park on the 22nd.

Look forward to seeing you all and joining in on the fun!

The west coast is still experiencing torrential rains and the snowpack is extremely heavy.  You all should experience the falls in Yosemite at their very, very most spectacular.  The Merced River will be roaring as well.

Seiler is absolutely right.  This is a very swift, cold, dangerous river in a normal spring.  Could be deadly this spring.

We are planning on bringing our canoe, but not for the river! There are some nice reservoirs and lakes not too far away, or so friends tell me. We will just have to hope the water is warm enough to safely paddle in. We will probably spend another couple of weeks in the area before heading back to Utah, so we have time.

We kicked it around, but the timing just doesn't work for us. We have to be about 100 miles away from Yosemite the first of June when our oldest grandson graduates high school...but because of other things in life, we can't hang around for 2 weeks after the rally.
Sorry, folks...maybe another time.

Sounds like a plan Jan.  We hope to have our shop done by June and we get our coach back from paint sometime in June and we will be able to travel again so we will have to plan a mini-rally sometime after that.

Safe travels my friend.

ATTENTION ALL ATTENDEES

I have become aware that there has been a road collapse on Big Oak Flat Road leading from our RV park into Yosemite Valley.  There is no estimate on when the road might be open, but it doesn't seem promising.  As a result, I have located an alternate RV park to move our rally to.  It is located near CA SR 41, which is the south entrance to the park.  It will be about a 30 minute drive to the south gate and then another 30 minutes into Yosemite Valley.  I have spoken to a client who lives near the park and she says it's a nice park.  They do have at least nine sites available with full hook ups at a weekly rate of approximately $ 40.00 per night.  I have not made any firm arrangements with them because I wanted to be sure we would all be willing to make the move.  The park is about 75 miles south of the previous park, so it's not a great distance different either way. If I can get a positive response from all or most of you, I will make arrangements with them and post the new contact info here.  Please reply a.s.a.p.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve and Dee: When will you know about moving or canceling? We have already made some fee reservations before the trip we can't get back completely, and we were going to make more for after. Things are filling up though, and we need to know timing. I know this whole thing isn't your fault, but maybe we should just move the rally to next year.

Have been eavesdropping on your thread and I have a question.  We have planned to stay in a
Thousand Trails park in mid July about 15 miles west of where you were going to stay.  Can you tell me where I
might get more info on the road collapse you spoke of.  We are about two months later so it may be repaired.  By the way we will be at Grizzly in West Yellowstone May 26.  Will try to look you up.

Things are filling up though, and we need to know timing. I know this whole thing isn't your fault, but maybe we should just move the rally to next year.

I spoke to someone at Yosemite today whose response was "I can't imagine the road not being open by then".  But of course, that's just an opinion at this point.  Our current reservation can be cancelled up to 7 days before for only a $10 fee.  Even if we move the rally to another park, that park wouldn't be more than 75 miles from our current park.  Therefore, I wouldn't expect it should change any of your before or after plans.  I did find a park with sites available but it doesn't have great reviews.  I am actually sending someone to that new park to check it out and report to me with pictures.  To top it off, I am a tax accountant and the time of year is making it extremely difficult for me to deal with this. As a last resort, we can always stay at our current park and just make a long drive in to the park by a different entrance.  It's about a 2 hour detour.  Long, but not impossible.  Trying to keep all options open at this point.  Hope this helps with your planning.

Steve, I looked at pictures of the slide. While they have to clear the road and fix damage to the road surface, its not the Rt 89 to Page in Arizona where the road base was destroyed and took a long time to first engineer and then construct. From what I've found they are currently working on adding drainage converts.
I don't think we will have a problem with staying at Yosemite Pines.

Thanks for the info. We won't make any changes now, but if the road isn't open by 7 days ahead, we will cancel. I don't quite understand whether the "2 hour detour" is one way or round trip, but it is more than we are willing to deal with. If we cancel, we won't be coming to California at all which is why this is a bigger deal for us than it is for you (1700 mile round trip). We might have to end up in Yellowstone instead (such a sacrifice!).

If anyone does Facebook, there is a group called "Yosemite Incident Feed" with pictures and news about the problem. It has frequent updates. You have to join the group to see everything, but it doesn't require moderator approval.

Here is the latest update.  I think our patience will pay off.  The Yosemite incident report has not given an estimated opening date yet for the road closure, however, they have said that 2 to 3 weeks seems likely.  That will suit us just fine as we have 5 weeks from today before our rally begins.  That's plenty of time with a lot of cushion for unexpected delays.  A big thank you to Ken and Betty for the updates during my busy time, I truly appreciate it! Looking forward to seeing all of you next month.  I am sure there are probably still sites available for anyone interested in climbing on board!

We are currently in Yosemite and will be here for the entire summer as we are volunteering with the Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue groups.

It looks like 120 will be open by the time your group arrives but ... no guarantee.  Also be aware there are a lot of construction projects going on right now that has caused detours throughout the park causing traffic delays.  They anticipate these projects might not be competed before Memorial Day.  So ... patience will be needed as getting around may be slow but definitely worth the wait.  Here's a link to the road work being done.  https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/roadwork.htm

We had more snow two days ago causing frazil ice (a sight to see!) in the streams below the waterfalls which are spectacular now and are only going to be better when you all arrive as all that snow melts.

Will keep track of your plans.  You're going to have a great time!

We have had a lot of rain over the past couple of weeks which is inhibiting the progress.  Obviously they would like to open this road ASAP and are working as fast as they can.  Keep checking for updates.  If I hear anything specific about an opening date estimate I will post it here.

I started packing our suitcases today. We are having autumn here in Australia and days are getting short. Can't wait to be in USA for summer again. We are flying to LA 8th of May. Hopefully we find some friendly Mexican in Corona to service our RV and after that we are on the road to Yosemite.
looks like Steve have some drama with the road colaps, but all is working out well after all.

The Park announced this morning that Big Oak Flat Road into the park will open May 1st. This is the extension of RT 120 that has been closed.
I'm ready for the Rally.

The official announcement from NPS: https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/yosemite-national-park-announces-re-opening-of-big-oak-flat-road.htm

Note there will be some one lane sections and night time closures for a while, but I am so relieved! On to Yosemite (along with other stops in California for us).

A few updates on the road have been posted at https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

The summary if you don't want to look it up is:
Closed Monday, May 15, from 9 pm to Tuesday, May 16, at 5 am. On May 16, expect 15-minute delays from 5 am to 5 pm. No other closures or delays are currently planned.  In other words, things should be fine but expect some delays.

I had mentioned in an earlier post that there is a lot of construction going on in the park which is not expected to be completed until the end of the month.  Much of the park is currently one-way traffic only which is causing traffic to go from Lower Falls to El Cap to get to Happy Isles for example.  It slows things down and you just have to be patient.

Another wrench in the works is the flooding that we are currently experiencing.  Yesterday afternoon at 2:00 pm the water at Pohono Bridge was at 10.26 ft, down from over 11 ft at midnight.  Flood stage for the river is 10 ft so they are watching it closely and closing areas based on the water. Swinging Bridge was closed yesterday but will probably be back open today. It is anticipated that the water will continue to decrease over the next week.  We are anticipating some rain in the valley and snow on the mountains this next week that could possibly have an impact on the water level.

You can follow the forecast on your mobile phone by going to:

It appears that everything is on track for our rally next week.  I checked in with the park and confirmed everyone's reservation.  It looks like we may have had one cancellation.  I have heard nothing from them personally, but the park shows their reservation as cancelled.  I sent them a PM, but also got no response.  Nonetheless, we are on schedule for a great rally.  Looks like we will be 8 coaches total. I will be arriving a day early (on the 13th), just to make sure everything goes smoothly.  We will have a meet and greet happy hour on Sunday afternoon, once everyone is settled.  Probably 4:30 or 5:00pm.  Location to be determined. The extended weather forecasts show sunny to partly cloudy conditions all week.  Temps in the low 70's during the day and low 40's at night.  No rain is forecast.  It appears that the road closure issue is resolved for the most part.  The information posted above (by UTTransplant) is the latest info.  Since we will be traveling into the park on weekdays, traffic should be lighter.  The only item of note is that on Monday evening, the 15th, we will all need to be out of the park by 9:00pm for a one night road closure.  If anyone has any questions for me, let me know.  Look forward to seeing all of you a week from today.

Nice. Flight in Delta was fine and emigration officers did not detain us this time. maybe they realize now that we are visiting country and will spent money instead steeling americans jobs. That made me happy.
My RV Phoebe started after 10 months perfectly after first key turn. All is working and we are slowly heading for Yosemite Rally. I am not sure how many days this trip will take us. We will be stopping somewhere for oil change. Hope that some of the truck stops will be able to do this for us on spot with delay.
See you all soon

FYI Glacier Point will be open.  Our Preventive Search and Rescue group has been asked to do patrols there beginning on Saturday.  The water levels have dropped so more of the meadows will also be open.

Hope you all enjoy your stay.

Jean, I certainly hope you are right.  Glacier Point is one of my favorite places and I assumed the road wouldn't be open until sometime after our rally was over, but I remained hopeful.  This is great news.

A note about driving directions.  On the website for Yosemite Pines, under our location and directions from Southern California, there is a warning not to take CA HWY 49 as mapquest and other navigation systems recommend.  CA SR 49 is not a suitable road for RV's.  I can attest to that.  I would not recommend taking CA SR 49.  I have taken the alternate route recommended on their website and it is fine.  If you need any assistance with directions, send me a PM.  See you all on Sunday!

If you are planning to go to Glacier Point bring extra clothing with you.  I was there yesterday and there is still a lot of snow.  We hit low clouds, mist and occasional rain.  When the clouds shifted the views of the valley were spectacular.  We never did get a full view of Half Dome!

We stopped on our way up at the trailhead for the Taft and Sentinel Trails.  There is still 3-1/2 to 4 feet of snow and the trail boundaries are not marked.

So excited for all of you that are going to be able to enjoy this fantastic National Treasure!

Nesbitt report for Betty.

Just do whatever's necessary to get from where you are to CA120 then follow it as directed to Old Highway 120 and all will be well.  Leave a little extra time for the last 20 or so miles to allow for climbing about 2000+ feet and negotiating the twisty parts. The road is plenty wide and your expert drivers will have no probs.

Look forward to seeing you all again!

The early arrivals got together for a nice dinner at a local diner.  Food was great, company was even better.  After dinner we all went back to Jan & Olga's motorhome to enjoy some TimTam cookies from Australia for dessert.  Nothing like Framily!  Happy mother's day to all the mom's on the forum!

Last night's  happy hour set the  tone for the rally! Lots of laughter, snacks, directions, information and an open schedule!

Ken Kuch won "Yosemite Sam" for his  diagnosis of Steve's electrical inverter problem.  Heard they spent today on the fix!

Terry missed Happy hour due to his Sunday Formula one race.  Today  I followed every one of Steve's directions and we saw Bridal Veil Falls,  Yosemite Falls , millions of tourists.  Terry was nearly  hit by a fast driving  tourist  while in a crosswalk, whew! We were about to give up at Yosemite Village as no parking spaces were available but  I navigated Terry  back around the loop in  stop and go traffic to  the  "Ahwahee Hotel."  where  again no parking places were available.  But suddenly a car  in front of us  pulled  out and we  had  a place to park  very near the hotel.  So we entered and decided to  have lunch.  Got a pager and were told we  had a 40 minute wait. While waiting we ran into  Bill and Corrine and spent a delightful afternoon in front of the  big lovely fireplace.  Finally we  were seated for  lunch.  Beautiful view, good food , great service.  A delightful day.  It rained all the way home!

Hope others have good enough internet to  post their activities as the rain ruined postponed Happy hour until  a group ventured out to a local old  bar.  They can tell that story!

So happy to have you reporting on the rally, Betty.  My favorite reporter!  If you're going to be stuck somewhere due to traffic or lack of parking room, I can't imagine anywhere better than the Ahwanhee Hotel.  Lucky, lucky!  Eager to hear reports of the rest of the rally.  Were the waterfalls at their most spectacular after the wet winter?

As Betty stated, first happy hour was a huge success minus Terry :<(  Everyone seems to like our RV park.  The company was outstanding as expected with RV Forum Framily.  Below is a picture of our first happy hour.  We are 15 total.  My first day here I simply asked Ken a question about my newly installed 2000 watt inverter.  Before you know it Ken is under my bed, in my breaker box, telling me that my inverter is wired in an unsafe manner.  That I need a sub panel and additional breakers.  He's insisting on fixing it for me, even though I didn't want to take advantage of his time, but he persisted.  So today, we're off to the hardware store, some 30 minutes away, buying all the materials for him to wire in a sub panel.  Below is a photograph showing his fine work of my newly (and correctly) installed sub panel behind my original panel.  Of course, everything works perfectly.

I brought along "Yosemite Sam" to award to someone every day for whatever reason may seem appropriate.  I surely felt Ken deserved this for his generosity with his time and knowledge to fix a problem I really didn't know I had.  Below is a photo of Ken and his award.  I surely owe him a lot more than this!  Needless to say, Ken and I didn't make it into the park today, so no waterfall photos from me.

Tonight Bill Roscoe took 9 of us who wanted to go into town to the Iron Door Saloon, the oldest saloon in CA.  I think they said 1852?  Anyway, we went and had a round of drinks to honor a good friend if Bill's who passed away suddenly yesterday.  It was a nice way to honor a man's memory, and very generous of Bill to buy the round of drinks!  My phone had died by then, so no photos of that.

Tomorrow they are forecasting a little rain, so we'll see who all goes into the park.  The rest of the week is supposed to be sunny and beautiful.  Wish you were all here with us!

Glad to see the Yosemite rally has had a successful start!  Steve, if there's one thing you can count on it's that we have a wonderful group who are very knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects and who are willing to help.  Ken is right up there at the top of the group.  He's always willing to share his time and ability so it's good to have him be the first recipient of the Yosemite Sam award!  Enjoying the photos.  Have a great week!

Terry and I  ventured out  to the  Yosemite National  Park  again today, on our  timeline (late). It is roughly a  45 minute drive from  our RV park to   center of  "town" within  Yosemite. I took most of the  photos yesterday on my Iphone and am still figuring out how to get those  photos loaded.  So here I go  old school with my "OLD' Canon camera where  I  know how to post photos via Picassa.

We had another adventure in the park  searching for parking places and shuttle stops and the Visitor Center. There is  much construction, detours and closed parking lots in the Village.  The names of  things have changed so the signs do not match what is on the  maps.  This  discrepancy is hard on a marriage! Seems the National News has  been  publicizing the  gushing waterfalls and MILLIONS of tourists are here!  We did  see the Kuch's  car  in the Ahwanee parking lot.  Heard they had a wonderful lunch with beautiful view, met new friends, got tips on where to visit.

When we finally arrived at the Visitor Center we  entered the Theatre for two of the most informative movies on the history of Yosemite. Think Civil War times!  Yellowstone was first but Yosemite came before!

Terry bought a  magnet and I bought a mug.  We are  happy!

Hope I don't step on Steve's toes as I saw him snapping photos of this afternoon's  Happy Hour as well as me.  Better to have twice the news than none right?

Promptly at 4:30 the  entire group assembled  for tales of the day.  A group went berry picking.  Jan said he  got  twice his money's worth as he paid by pound but what  you ate did not get weighed! He shared a  basket of blueberries at the event this afternoon!  He did  also keep patting his  belly all afternoon !

Bill and Corrine went out to breakfast and did laundry.  Everyone needs a day off in this RV lifestyle. Ken and Sheila secured a coveted Ahwanehee Parking place and enjoyed lunch at the hotel.   Pam and Kevin told me what they did but I've already forgotten , forgive me.  Alan and Suzanne also got lucky with lunch at the hotel!   YUM and what a view!

So YOSEMITE Sam was Ken's to  present but alas he left Happy hour early  (it was very coolish) so  Sheila brought out the  Award and with a few heads together in private consultation, it was determined that  Bill Roscoe should win the Yosemite  Sam award for his generous "first  round" at the Ironhorse Saloon last night. This was in honor of  the passing of his good friend  Lyn.  We learned tonight  that  Lyn had  red hair and a handlebar  mustache, just like Yosemite Sam!

Thank you Bill and congrats on your award.  Now yours to bestow on someone else!

No worries Betty, you could never step on my toes.  Remember, those not here said post lots of pictures, so the more the better.  Since the weather forecast was iffy today, a group of us went blueberry picking.  We had a lot of fun.  We picked about 12 pounds of berries between the 5 of us.  Something unique and not expected on this trip.  Keeps life interesting.  Tomorrow we are going into the park.  Here are some pics from the blueberry adventure.  I think Jan ate his way through the field, but they said we could eat as many as we wanted while picking.

For your information, if you happen to be in the area of El Cap Meadow today or tomorrow you will be able to see the YOSAR (Yosemite Search and Rescue) Team doing some short-haul training.  There will be PSAR (Preventive Search and Rescue) Volunteers keeping people out of the meadow itself and away from the Team.  The PSAR Team will be available to answer questions about the Park and/or Search and Rescue.

I have been struggling to resize pictures, but I think I can do it now. We went into Yosemite on Monday. This was our first trip, and all I can say is WOW! We left the RV park at 8:00, and only had moderate traffic at first. However there were true traffic jams beginning around noon until we left the park around 3:00. It was rainy and cold, and we hadn't dressed appropriately. We intend on going into the Hetch Hetchy area today, and then taking our bikes in for a ride around the valley tomorrow when it is warmer (it is still cool and rainy).

Great photos, people.  Keep 'em coming please!  I never would have expected blueberries in that area.  We eat them almost every day and they're really expensive so enjoy them (and all their nutritious ingredients) while you can!

Another great day here. We had breakfast with some of the rally attendees, then we headed into the park. Just past the (closed) turnoff to Tioga Pass we saw a bear! Beautiful cinnamon colored brown bear with a collar just eating in the meadow. We also went to Hetch Hetchy. The water line was 6-8' below high pool, and it was lovely. We then continued with highway 120 to highway 140 to Mariposa. Cascade Falls was gorgeous. From Mariposa we headed back to the RV park by way of highway 49, a twisty, windy, and lovely road. Tomorrow we plan on eating breakfast in the park and riding our bikes around the valley before dinner with the rally attendees.

Today was the most spectacular day.  It was the type of day I envisioned in bringing the "Framily" here.  A group of us headed out to the infamous "tunnel view" vista point.  We got some fantastic photos.  We then headed up to Glacier Point.  It's a vantage point 4000 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor.  We captured some more incredible pictures.  We headed down into the valley for a stop at the Majestic Hotel (formerly known as the Awahnee Hotel).  Traffic was very reasonable today.  We strolled the hotel and the surrounding grounds for a few more photos.  Then back to camp for late arrival at happy hour, but we made it.  Don got awarded the Yosemite Sam for patiently sitting in the back seat of my car, by himself, waiting for our group to get going this morning.

I can't compete with Pam and Steve's reports of the day as I did  laundry!  We did enjoy Happy Hour and  meeting some new friends from Australia who now  live in Sunset City AZ. Well they have been in Us for 25 years!  They are looking at becoming RVForum members. George and his wife are pictured here.
I also got a shot of Don the new  recipient of Yosemite Sam.

A bunch of us  wandered off to  Groveland to   have  pizza.  Yum  plus a beer!

Steve promised  me a lesson in resizing photos after our group dinner tonight. After a few tries of email photos sent and received we  both laughed as he was using  Windows program and I use a Mac. So much for shared technology.

Eleven of our group departed at  10:30 toward  Hetch Hetchy .  This is a  very northern part of Yosemite and not  in the crowed   section. We had toured a Thousand Trails RV park close by (concluding Steve picked the very best park for all of us)  had lunch at Evergreen Lodge  and  then   visited the Hetch Hetchy area including the dam and Reservoir.

The day was capped off with a Happy hour at  our  campground  I missed ( sadly missed Pam's brownies too)  then off to Buck Meadows for a  final group dinner.  I  took photos but I'm having trouble with my old Picassa program and the slow internet here so stay tuned ( it  may take a while till I get photos to you , but I will.)

We met Kim, daughter of Bill and Corrine.  Bill brought his favorite wines to share at dinner tonight.  Don Nesbitt and Mary Ann Celebrated their last night with the group and he presented Yosemite Sam to ... wait for it.... He has a few nominations...Jan for waiting till end of  lunch meal to  express his displeasure with  VERY salty elk chili and Terry who is allowed to buy ice cream in any hour of the day  even after a big lunch.  But Don in his  extreme gentleman way offered up Yosemite Sam  back to STEVE  for hosting this  rally.  Drumroll, applause!!!!  There is no question but that this group is having a wonderful time!

Obviously, those over 50 should not attempt to teach anything about technology.  I'm sure there are a few exceptions, but Betty and I had a good laugh about this one.  I have just a few pictures to share from today.  We actually went to a section of the park I had never been to, so when you're taking it all in, you sometimes forget to snap more pictures.  We had a great time exploring this remote section of the park, had a great lunch, and marveled at the enormity of the O'Shaughnessy Dam.  I wish I could share the video of the water being released from the dam.  The roar of the rush was incredible.  This reservoir provides almost all of the drinking water to the city of San Francisco, who paid to construct this dam.  Tonight we shared a good meal and great company as we bid farewell to Don & Mary Ann who are leaving for Yellowstone in the morning.  Thanks for coming all the way to California to share some time with us!

Thanks for sharing all the great pictures!  I especially liked seeing the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir upon whose water we depended for so many years - and which we miss greatly.  I always said we had the best water in the country because it came down from the Sierra Range in huge pipes, then it's stored in the Crystal Spring Reservoir which is equally pristine, before being piped out to residents from San Francisco to Mountain View, in other words the upper half of the San Francisco Peninsula.  Our water was good tasting as well as being naturally soft.

It's also great to see so many of you having fun!

Something new and different again today.  Several of us went to Columbia State Historic Park.  They put on an authentic reenactment of an 1852 gold rush town.  They had saloons, blacksmiths, gold panning operations, etc.  For me it was like seeing my CA history class in live action.  After, we visited the town of Sonora.  We wandered in and out of antique shops and an old fire fighting museum.  It was a fun day.

Just a note to let you know the "early leavers" had a pretty much uneventful journey to Winnemucca, NV, 400+ miles, yesterday. A chart of our elevations through the day would resemble a big yo-yo but the lumbering beast handled it well.

When we made the decision to stay on Interstates and go through Salt Lake City, MA called Mike and Chrystal and we'll be able to get together with them this afternoon.  Another lucky break for the Nesbitts!

Most of all, this is to thank all of the Framily for making our Yosemite Rally so enjoyable.  A big Thank You goes to Steve for all the work he put into making sure we all stayed busy and had a great time -- even getting the early rainy weather changed to sunshine for the rest of the week --  and to Dee for supporting him and putting up with him!  Best wishes for a successful knee repair and quick recovery.

Enjoy the remainder of the rally and Safe Travels to your next destination!

Yosemite Sam has a final home.  Last night Steve presented him to Bill R for keeps.  When  Steve learned that the friend of Bill's who passed away this week had red  hair and a mustache he presented him to Bill  as a memento.

Bill's family happily accepted the award!

Most folks took a down day today preparing for tomorrow's departure  :'(  Jan, Olga and I had to run a reconnassence mission of sorts.  Jan lost his debit card at the 1852 festival yesterday, but a good person had turned it in to lost and found.  After, we went to a chocolate festival in Oakdale, CA.  We had high hopes, but were fairly disappointed.  It was more just like street fair, with a couple of booths that had pre-made chocolates.  Not at all what we were expecting.  But all ended well when Suzanne suggested we all go for pizza to celebrate our final night, even though we had already done our official farewell.  We all got to sit together and enjoy each others company as well as some really good pizza.

I would personally like to that all who came and made this rally a big success.  Special thanks to Betty Brewer for assisting with the picture posting and encouraging me to do a rally.  I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Terry and  I  pulled out of  Yosemite Pines RV Park at  7:30 this morning.  We almost beat Ken and Sheila but he took the  short cut out of the park and  beat us  on that  lovely sharp curved road  8 miles of downhill.  The good part of traveling  on A Sunday morning is the light traffic.  We  made it  402 miles to Yreka.  Will overnight and get  new tires for  MH  in morning in Eugene, Or.

Such a fine group and such a beautiful place.

We left just after Betty and Terry at 8:00. We wanted to get a NFS campground somewhere near Lake Tahoe, but it was just too crowded for my taste. We made it Winnemucca, farther than planned, so we will make it home to SLC tomorrow. I was so deprived of internet (have I mentioned before how much I dislike Tengonet internet? It was awful.) and television (our site had no cable and no sight line for the satellite) that we are in the KOA. Very nice place actually. We are headed out to dinner.

Thanks to Steve for setting up a nice rally. Yosemite was great, and the surrounding area quite interesting. Of course the people make the sightseeing more fun.

Thanks for organizing the rally! We had a great time.
We may have gotten ahead of Terry for a while, but he beat us here to Yreka. Tomorrow we head to Coburg, OR for our first service appointment at Cummins.

A big thanks to Steve for organising the rally and to all the participants who contributed to making it so successful. :-*
We enjoyed ourselves immensely.
We left around 9.45 and arrived in Reno mid afternoon, now we are parked alongside the Truckee River and will sleep tonight to the sounds of water rushing over a small rapid. ;D

To all the attendees, you are most welcome.  I enjoyed the opportunity to share this little slice of California with all of you.  It did seem to fly by.  Other than being without Dee, I had a great time.  Especially catching up with framily I hadn't seen for a while, as well as meeting new folks.  To those who enjoyed online with us, I am glad you enjoyed our posts. I am grateful to Betty Brewer for assisting me with the rally postings and photos.  I had a thankfully uneventful drive home although it was hot.  99 degrees pulling the Grapevine hill on I-5 was not fun, but she ran like a champ.  Glad to be home.  Can't wait for the next rally.

Sorry we couldn't make it. Timing was just wrong for us. I LOVE Yosemite. We used to make the drive up from the valley at least once per year.
One of the last times we were there, I got these pics:

(follow along...they tell a story...sort of)

just a bit closer:

and a bit closer still:

Those were taken with my old Nikon 5700...and the last pic is a crop from the previous picture.
