Matthew is heading straight for me. The roads are all clogged solid and there are no empty hotel rooms for 500 miles. I am stuck here.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

Geez, that sucks Tom.  Hope you can anchor the Motorhome somehow and then "hunker" down 'til Mathew passes.

Good Luck and "hopefully", stay safe.

Tom,  stay safe, I don't expect much from Matthew down here but I don't know about your area. As long as it doesn't make a turn, you will be on the west side so I don't expect much for your area. The NE corner of the hurricane is the most dangerous where you get tornadoes and really destructive winds. Getting another feeder band right now with rain and am expecting a very wet afternoon.

I am expecting it to be pretty bad. I realize we are on the right side of the hurricane but they are still predicting 100 mph winds in our area.

We are in West Melbourne, near I95 almost right in the path. We will be staying in the house with the MH in the side yard between two houses. It survived in 2004. If the MH survives we will be OK on power with the 7.5 kW generator. The water tank and fuel tank are full and enough food for a few days. The house has a new roof and hurricane rafter tie downs.

The 2004 hurricane was really scary so this one may be worse. I definitely don't want to be in the MH during the peak of the storm. We were in a storm about 10 years ago in South Dakota and  that was enough for me.

It shouldn't be too bad in St. Cloud. Being in the MH might be a little scary but should be safe. Good Luck Tom.

Cash.

Cold hard cash.

Get it NOW while you can. If it hits big, then cash is the only thing that will help you get anything. When the power goes down, no one takes any kind of credit, debit or check. And of course the black market requires cash only too. So get it while you can.

I am refugee from the coast, searching around for campsites in north central SC cause many evacuees were smart enough to book up all the camps first.

There's got to be a shelter near you. That's a pretty populated area. I know it would be rough for you to replace everything in your home, assuming the worst happens, ( it won't- gotta believe)but it would be rougher for us to replace you. Get to a shelter, we're praying for you and others being affected.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said,
But I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I meant

UPDATE, So far feeder bands with lots of rain for short periods of time with wind gusts to 40mph. I believe the center is a little north of us now. The TV news of course is trying to get people to panic but this is not my first rodeo. 100mph winds in your area I doubt but you never know. Remember your MH is designed to go down the road at 80mph. The office there should be able to sustain 100mph easily.

It was obvious to me this morning that that was going to happen. The storm kept moving closer and closer. They were predicting 120 mph winds in Osceola for tonight.

Remember your MH is designed to go down the road at 80mph.
This is true but the problem is the wind will have everything that is loose turned into a missile. Broken windows are a real possibility. One reporter this morning was reminiscing about Andrew in 92. He said he was driving in Miami the day after Andrew and there was not one sign that was still up. They all turned into missiles.

Hey Tom, I was going to invite you here but I know you could not leave your cats there by themselves and our new dog does not like cats at all. Looks like you are going to get initiated to florida life. I haven't missed a hurricane in 67 years except when I was in the Army. The only ones I remember are Donna, Charlie, Jeanne, and Frances....Its good to be inland at a time like this.

I thought about calling you but I know you are allergic to cats so that would not work. I knew this was going to happen eventually so it is not a big deal. It is better than earthquakes which occur without warning and there is no way to run away. We gotta do breakfast next week.

Matthew has moved north of us with just feeder bands with gusts to 40mph. Hopefully Tom, you will receive pretty much the same. Like Catblaster, I have not missed too many hurricanes. I would have invited you down here but we didn't know what we were going to get until this morning. I only closed the shutters on the north side of the house as I knew that was the direction the wind would be coming. They are forecasting by midnight all the worst weather should be through.

We have had on and off rain all day. We are expecting the worse overnight but only at tropical storm winds. We are in our casita which is frame construction and only 7 years old. Put 2 patio chairs in our SUV and our bikes in the coach. If we lose electric, the bikes will go in the casita and we'll go in the coach. Tom, so glad you found a safe location. Everyone be safe.

My 89 year old Mom is in Daytona Beach with her 3 cats...she refused to go to a shelter...she had a home that got destroyed in 92 from hurricane Andrew. She spent the night in the bathroom with her cats and when the hurricane past the roof had blown off...I went there and could not believe the devastation...looked like a war zone...hoping nothing like that happens tomorrow...I am very worried :(

I hope her home now was built with the latest codes as far as hurricane standards. If not we'll pray for her safety.  I hope she realized when she decided to ride it out that the Emergency people may not be able to get to her until the hurricane passes.

That is not a very good idea. The entire east coast of Florida north of Miami will get hammered.

You should call the Sheriff's department.  There is a mandatory evacuation order for the beach area. They would probably help get her to a shelter.

"A mandatory evacuation was ordered Wednesday evening for Volusia County residents living on the beach side, low-lying areas and RV and mobile-home parks."

It is 6 am and it is not as bad as I expected. Matthew is directly east of us and it moved out into the ocean during the night. There is a drizzle outside and a bit of wind but overall not too bad. I think I will be able to return home in a few hours.

Where we are it is almost a non-event. A few dead limbs down and some spanish moss scattered across the yard. It is a good thing it turned slightly away from the coast, this gave us just enough space so as not to be a big danger. Power still on and we didnt even lose our DirecTV. I'm prettty sure everything at your park is still intact Tom.

This will be my first Hurricane but I've been far too close to tornados in the past.. (Close enough to see them).

Matthew is here.. at least the leading edge.. So far just rain.. Daughter is worried but they expect winds within the history of this motor home as currently configured and water at least 3 feet below my tires.. So I'm hoping they were.... Overly expecting. but even if we get what the forecasters fear.... I should be safe.  Will likely be off line, but safe.. Have alternate communications but won't work for internet.

We survived another one. The power stayed on. The ditches were running over the sides. Tree branches and debris all over the yard, Motorhome and truck still upright. Slept well. No damage anywhere. Winds are still high. Came out very good.

Very old joke about a physics professor who said that even the greatest hurricane force winds are not dangerous to the human body. To prove his point he went out in the storm and used his belt to hold himself to a sign post.

The film from the camera he set up showed him smiling and doing just fine, right up until the boat hit him.

Well I called several friends and determined it was safe to return home. The trip home was bizarre. The roads are virtually empty. Not a lot of debris like I expected. The toll booths were closed and tolls were suspended. My park looks to be ok. No damage to my RV and I have water and power and the Internet so life is good. I feel like I am finally an official Floridian now that I have survived  my first hurricane. Just in time for four baseball games.

Here outside of Ocala we lost power at 8:30 a.m. and it's still out, but otherwise this is a non-event. Florida thunderstorms are often more dangerous. I'm not complaining - better an excess of caution than a disaster. The power companies are reluctant to send crews out when the winds are still whipping around - even 20 mpg is a lot if you are in a bucket lift or climbing a pole.

We have the coach in the yard and I powered up the genset after we went a couple hours without power. Ran an extension cord into the house to power a few things, e.g. the house fridge, and charge phones and computers.

I am doing the campground shuffle in South Carolina. Found another park that had a vacancy come open at midnight, so I snatched it up. PHEW. I really and truly do not like to shop at Walmart, and the thought of camping there really churned my tummy.

At each camp I am meeting lots of evacuees and also snowbirds on their way to Florida who are stopped in their tracks. Also, people like me who are supposed to be camping on the coast but can't.

I bought some provisions today including comfort foods like a trip to the ABC store. Usually I don't drink at all, but during a hurricane, it can take the edge off for sure.  ::)

Doggy does not like this weather.

Anytime the rains slack off, I drag him out briefly as then he drags me right back inside. He was crying when we came back, poor baby. Then I realized he was crying for a towel because he was soaking wet.

So I fluffed him up again much to his delight.

Bored with our small indoor space, he had three  rough and tumble rounds with Bear-neice before he tired of her fighting. Now he has discovered my new pillow and moved it more to his liking, then planted himself in the middle of it to clean his privates. Good grief.

I never buy cookies. But I bought some Pepperidge Farm Double Chocolate cookies and they are heavenly. Only 8 to a bag and I fear I have demolished a quarter of them already.  I am going to hide the rest with the liquor I am hiding from the ranger.

Another late check in just showed up to claim the one empty spot here.

Life is goof.

John, it is not the speed of the wind that is the real problem, it is the things the wind are throwing around.

I agree and a few things have hit my Motor home.. Not sure what they were but from teh sound of the impact nothing big, (thinking perhaps the plug on the end of a power cord)  No damage, Wind is still in the 20MPH range from the effect on the Motor home... Though the eye is moving towards me I expect that to start changing in an hour or two due to changing conditions and I really do not expect it to get much worse than it is now, perhaps 4-50MPH where i'm at well within past experience.

Rain is medium heavy, Expect it to also about double

The experts are predicting a storm surge as high as 9 Feet, was 12, so that is improving, and I'm at 15 so I should be good.

I am in Lancaster SC since my coastal reservations were cancelled by the governor.

It has been steady rain since sunset and sunrise is about 10 minutes away and it's still just pouring down.

Poor doggy. He doesn't like to go out in the rain to do his thing. Usually I carry the garbage out once or twice a day and doggy loves to do his thing at the dumpster area. However the dumpster in this camp is quite a long ways from the camp sites, so I've got quite the hike to get it out.

There is no storm damage I can see anywhere in my neighborhood (out in the Ocala Nat'l Forest), but I hear that a major tree fall on a highway two miles from here took at power lines to this area. My power company says its crews were out starting at 6 am today, but they have a lot of outages and I have no idea what the priorities may be. Supposedly they have 100+ extra linemen, borrowed from out of state, so hopefully things will get fixed up soon. Meanwhile, the genset hums along!

Sun is out and it's going to get warm soon, so we might decide to get back into the coach to get some a/c.

I've been watching and searching for damage to Beverly Beach Campground. If A1A south of 100 is washed out then I can only imagine what Beverly looks like, it sits directly on the ocean with only a short seawall at the edge. It was great to camp there and wake up in the morning with nothing but water and a sunrise coming thru the windshield.

Sounds like you're upset with the governor.

More like ENORMOUSLY sad.

It takes a year to get a reservation at my all time favorite place in the whole wide world, Hunting Island State Park. I try to go spring and fall as an affirmation that I am still alive (another miracle!)

So missing out of my soulful commune with nature I experience there, is SAD.

My reservations run through the end of October, so hoping that some of it can be salvaged. I haven't applied for a refund yet. I am hoping to get in there and volunteer with the cleanup and just claim a refund for the days missed.

We are in Leland, NC just across the river from Wilmington.  So far not much worse than a good summer thunder storm.  Just some small branches and lots of leaves down.  Yard is a lake but no big deal.  The house is up about 3'.

Yeah, we are in a campground that has some really sloped sites. I was a bit disappointed at first seeing them. Now I have to say I am pretty happy as there has been a moderate constant rain for the last several hours, and will be until at least 5 PM.

I never buy cookies. But I bought some Pepperidge Farm Double Chocolate cookies and they are heavenly. I am going to hide the rest with the liquor I am hiding from the ranger.

You gotta watch those alcoholic rangers. They'll drink your booze every time.   ;D

Glad that everyone is safe. Be careful about moving around outside as there can always be high power lines that are down. Thanks SeilierBird for starting this thread so we know your alright as well as other forum members along the path.

You are welcome, CamperAl. I knew it had to be done since it was such a major event and we have so many people on the eastern seaboard. I wanted anyone living along the coast to realise just how serious this hurricane was.
I would like to apologize to anyone I have not yet offended. Please be patient and I will get to you shortly.

It was great to camp there and wake up in the morning with nothing but water and a sunrise coming thru the windshield.

I'd be a bit upset if the water was coming through MY windshield.  :o

Damn Matthew is really screwing up my life. I thought it was gone but it is not. They had to postpone the Dodgers Nationals game because it is raining in Washington DC. Booo.

Nonstop rains and some wind until about an hour ago, from the NC/SC border near Lancaster, SC.

Gotta LOVE southerners.

I am only solo traveler in park.

Big family scattered among 5 different sites, brought me a huge heaping plate of homemade food, same folks I gave parking to on my lot since they ran out of room for cars.

Awesomely delicious!

My sister that lives just outside of Goldsboro, NC lost her power now too. She was told it would probably three days before it was back on. I hope not though. She's on a fixed income, with a freezer full of food. It would  be a financial devastation to lose that food. She does have enough sense to leave the freezer closed, and she was considering putting extra quilts over it for added insulation.

We got so lucky here in central Florida. Haiti got hammered and north of us there is massive flooding. The hurricane predictors got it all wrong. It did not wrap around and come back and hit Florida a second time. Instead it went up the Canada and died.

The "loop back" thing was always a statistically tiny probability, yet some of the media and emergency preparedness people chose to highlight it repeatedly. I was once again underwhelmed by the media coverage, which consisted of many hours of babble with little useful information. Whenever I tuned in (or went to a website) to find out eye location, windspeeds, track projections, or the status of evacuation routes. I instead found some gal or guy blathering about storm danger or interviewing somebody saying they would or would not  evacuate. They could have been providing up-to-the minute info on storm positions, time of arrival at various points and expected wind speeds, least congested evacuation highways, places that still had hotel rooms available, etc., but instead of useful public service they chose to "cover the story".

The media here in Miami always tries to talk the storm here and of course they try to get people to panic. It takes me about 5 minutes to close my shutters but I only closed the shutters on the north side of the house because I knew that was the direction the wind would be coming from and I was not expecting 80 to 100 mph wind that they kept trying to talk in here. Now I must admit I sure missed the call on Andrew as it did make a last minute turn. Now we sit back and wait for the next one.

Talked to my sister yesterday morning. She has power back, and all is good in her community. She hasn't bothered to go into Goldsboro itself, so I don't know how they're making out with flooding there from the Neuse River.

At one point Friday Night I was tracking the storm and it was headed straight for me, ETA about Midnight.. But I know a LITTLE about storms and kept watching as the sun set and it turned to the north and missed me..... I anticipated that.

That said. I was prepped to bug out if it did nto turn and by Midnight I'd have been up around Atlanta.
