We have 7 days of vacation. We are leaving from Rancho Cucamonga CA. Any ideas on where to take the motor home? We want to go some time in Sept. We thought about going up the coast to Big Sur but have done that route lots of times. We heard the Oregon coast is nice but I don't think 7 days will do that. Please give us some ideas. Thanks Brenda

How about San Diego or San Clemente? Not far from home and you could just sit and relax.

It would involve some driving, but since you have a dune buggy you might enjoy the area surrounding Winchester Bay.

Small world dept:  my nephew-in-law, Aaron, teaches history and coaches basketball at Rancho Cucamonga High School.

Seven days is a bit short, but if you are willing to drive a lot you can make at least mid coast in one hard day.  That leaves 5 to get back to SFO area and one day to get home from there.  Doable.

Another possibility is to hang on to your vacation until October or November and head to the desert with the dune buggy. Anza Borrego or Ocotillo Wells.

Or if you want to stick with September, there's Pismo Beach, Santa Cruz, Monterey.

Do you like the desert? Joshua Tree National Park is close by and stunning. The weather should be good there in September. Camping is dirt cheap there, but no hookups in the park. But there are RV parks in 29 Palms real close by.

Thanks for all your great suggestions. I think that we would like to see the Oregon coast. Any suggestions? We would love to see some light houses .We also like hiking and exploring.  Thanks again.

Driving up the OR coast is one of our favorite trips, but we do that in about 2 months, stopping at all the lighthouses, oyster farms and other sights. You can just drive up US 101, but if you only have 7 days, you'll have to turn around very quickly.

I also have a friend that teaches at that school. Yes it is a small world! I have never heard of Winchester Bay.

Seven days may not be enough time to do the Oregon Coast.  However a compromise might be Bodega Bay, just north of San Francisco.  There is a county park that is right on the bay, so you will get some coastal feeling, good seafood and cool weather.  You can find the information here: http://www.sonoma-county.org/parks/pk_doran.htm  If you have a tow car, you can drive up Highway 1, all along the beach for day trips.

If you don't want to go that far, there is  Chula Vista RV Park in San Diego which is very nice, on the bay with good restaurants nearby and of course San Diego at your door steps.  Chula Vista is pricey; but worth it.

Marsha~Thanks Marsha,  I will check that site out right now!

OK I know that this sounds like alot but I would like to see
1.Doran Park
2.Oregon oyster farm
3.Yaquina bay light house
4.Yaquina head light house
Is there a site to go on that would help me map it out best? Or where to stay along the way?I know it will be alot of driving but that's OK. Thanks for all the great ideas.

I went to, Oregon.gov and found a lot of info. I'm in the Pasadena, CA area, Google says that I'm 955 miles away from Yaquina. 16 hrs.

As J says, you're about 1,000 miles from Newport. The best place to camp is the Newport Marina, across the road from the Aquarium. You can just about swim to the lighthouse  ;D . The CG is on one endof the bridge crossing the river and the Yaquina Bay Recreation Area is on the other end. IIRC, there is an oyster farm up the road a couple of miles along the river, north side. Not familiar with Doran Park.

The Oregon state parks are great, many nice campgrounds. There are several along the coast. You might give them a try. But 1000 miles is a mighty long way to go for a 7 day vacation.

Another vote for Oregon state parks. All the ones we've stayed at have been very nice.

Some friends didn't want to stay at state parks when we made a joint trip to Oregon & Washington a couple of years ago because "state parks don't have sites long enough" for his 44 foot motorhome. One day, while our friends accompanied us in our car, I took a detour to a state park, pulled up at the kiosk and asked "how long are your typical sites?". The answer, that I already knew, was "80 feet".
