Ive read several other posts on Onan generators with same problems I am having with mine. I haven't found a definite answer to the problem.  Generator makes clicking noise at starter, but wont turn over. Flashing code says its a starting battery or dirty connection battery cable connection problem. This has been checked and new starting battery installed. Still same problem. If you take jumper cables and jump on solenoid it will turn over. Is it a solenoid problem?  An auto technician told me that  the solenoid I have is  the same, as on an older Ford pickup. Auto parts had one. I put it on, still same no crank situation. Call to Onan says the Ford solenoid looks the same on the outside, but wired different on inside and wont work, I going to get an orginal Onan solenoid I guess as a next step. House batteries do not have any thing to do with starting of gernerator, do they? Your help and advice please. Cant help but think it a simple thing Im overlooking, as this gen ran perfect at last starting 6 weeks ago. Thanks

Do you have a battery disconnect switch?  Is it on? If you are able to crank it with an outside source, it might indicate your house batteries are not getting power to it. If it was a bad solenoid, I don't think you would be able to crank it. Someone else here might have a better solution for you.  Good luck.

On second thought...if the battery disconnect source is not the problem, and you have good house batteries, it could not hurt to isolate the solenoid and rule it out.

Which side of the solenoid are you jumping? If you are jumping the started direct, you must be getting some serious sparking going on. If you are jumping the solenoid and using the starter button to start it with, the solenoid is good. Take a volt reading on the battery side of the solenoid both sitting and when using the start button. If you have voltage and it goes away when you push the start button, you have a bad connection, or a bad wire.

He's probably jumping to the starter side of the solenoid for the starter. Not necessarily a lot of sparks. I tend to think the start solenoid is bad. There are actually quite a few different solenoids that look like Ford type but are different from a Ford.  The service guy wasn't pulling your leg. By the way,  the solenoid is probably available at Napa.

yes, we jumped it thru starter side of solenoid, and it would crank, otherwise not. Thanks everyone for your input.
