automatic transmission oil temp while towing?

I'd guess most automatic transmissions run around 100 deg. F above ambient when running under load (ok with transynd? Sp). I start to worry at 200F and get the first overtemp alarm at about 230F. If you tend to run close to 200F consistently, I'd think about getting a supplemental transmission fluid cooler.

Ernie.

Agree with Ernie - anything under 200 is fine, and with a synthetic tranny fluid even 210-230 is OK (though not something I would recommend).

My Allison 3000 with Transynd synthetic is fine at 210 and still OK at 220 (says Allison).

My F350 with a tranny cooler runs around 195 F with no load.  I expect similar temps loaded.  There is a note to allow the truck to idle "back down to normal temps" after towing.
