DirecTV dropping DNS

We just got that notification today.  It sounds like they won't be available on Dish either.  I wonder how we RVers who have TV dishes on our roof will fare? I suppose we'll still be able to get our local TV channels as long as we travel within our spot beam but won't have any channels once we leave it.  Equal Access came about originally because people who lived in rural areas without CATV had no TV signals and they were given access to DNS channels via satellite.  That means people who live in rural areas won't have TV either.  And we sure as heck can't carry cables long enough for cable TV!  Boy, talk about killing off an entire market.  I dare say the members of Congress who voted not to continue this part of the STELAR Act don't have a clue how people get their TV stations.

Dish hasn't offered DNS in quite awhile now. They do make it quite easy to change locals as we travel though. There is a way to get a free pseudo-DNS, but it involves a possible service address TOS violation if Dish ever decided to pursue it.

Dish supplies locals in all 210 TV designated market areas (DMA's), so there's no need for DNS in rural areas. DirecTV only carries 198 DMA's though, so apparently their subscribers do need DNS in some areas.

This is strictly a DirectTV issue since they didn?t offer local channels, only the national feeds from NY and LA. Dish allows local channels on a spot beam so it isn?t an issue there. I much prefer getting local weather and news wherever I am.

DirecTV carries the locals in 198 of the 210 markets. They also use spot beams. Dish carries all 210 markets...

If by "THEY" you mean DirecTV you are incorrect.
DirecTV provides local channels to their subscribers in 198 of the 210 markets.... Many, (maybe MOST? or ALL?), by SPOT BEAM.

Yes, we have our local channels on DirecTV which we get until we leave the area of the spot beam.

AT&T has negotiated a DNS carriage deal with Fox. Still working on the other networks...

The bad news is this:
"The legislation only extends STELAR, (which allows satellite operators to broadcast DNS [Distant Network Stations], for truckers, RV users and tailgaters), until May 31, 2020".

That's the already known news. The new news is that DTV is negotiating retransmission agreements directly with the network stations that will replace the expiring STELAR out of market rules that allowed DNS without those individual negotiations under a blanket mandatory license.

DIRECTV can no longer carry ABC?s ?out-of-market? channel under a new law, but it has signed last-minute deals with CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW to continue offering its programming to certain rural residents, RV owners and others who can?t get their local network affiliates through the satcaster.

This is correct.  Last night we had DNS channels for CBS, NBC and CW but not ABC.

Interesting because this mornintg we got all the E/W feeds including ABC. We also continue to get PBS. I should mention that these are all SD feeds because our Winegard Trav'ler is not working at this time.

Exact same for me...until yesterday (Thursday the 18th).  At about noon, I lost all of them.

We lost ABC (E & W) shortly after my last post, but we still have all the rest including PBS. DTV signed carriage agreement with the networks, except ABC. There were negotiating with ABC it appears to have failed.

We lost all of the DNS feeds a few weeks ago.  Is anyone saying that they come back?

Alternatively, has anyone found a streaming service that effectively replaces the DirecTv services?

If you're in one of it's service areas, https://www.locast.org/ streams all of the local channels free.  A $5 a month donation turns off the "nag" commercials.

Keep in mind streaming uses data.  About 1-2.5 Gb/hr for HD, 700 Mb/hr for Standard Definition.

We never lost the DNS feeds only the ABC feed because ABC and DTV haven't agreed to a carriage license to replace the Stelar act that had allowed DTV to carry the National feeds to a) unserved markets and b) the mobile market (RVers and Truckers).
