Title: AT&T Mobley is available again
Post by: Lou Schneider on June 17, 2017, 01:47:41 AM
AT&T is accepting orders for the Mobley again.  I just checked their website and they're promising delivery between June 19 and 21.

The terms are the same as before:  $20 a month for unlimited 4G service, subject to de-prioritization after 22 GB (possible slowdown during periods of network congestion).  You have a choice to either purchase the Mobley up front for $99 with month-to-month service or paying a $45 activation charge for a 2 year contract with the Mobley included.

No doubt this batch will also quickly sell out.

I just ordered one. For $20 a month it's a deal for me.

I wanted to buy one of these back in April but I went on a 6 week European trip and waited.  When I came home they were all gone as well as the 79.99 ones at Best Buy.

I have been checking every day and this morning they were back in stock.  Ordered one and the status says that it will ship 6/19 to 6/21.

I ordered parts to build a usb power cord a couple of weeks ago and the parts should arrive from Hong Kong before I get the ZTE Mobley.

Hopefully by next week I'll be up and running.

Mine came in yesterday.  Plugged it in and up and running within seconds.

Great little box.

Just plugged it in and it started working.  Newer firmware, option to not time out already there.

They sent info telling how to call to start service but that was not necessary.

Check your account online and make sure the Mobley is activated with the $20 unlimited plan. There have been some reports of them shipping with a more expensive low GB plan. Worth a check to make sure, and it only takes a phone call to correct it.

Checking online tells me that the bill is 0.00 at this time and it is for unlimited usage.  Can't tell until they put a bill on the account.  I do know that when I signed up and paid my $99.99 plus tax the web site said that I was buying the $20 unlimited connected car plan.

Thanks NY_Dutch for the links to build a usb power supply for about 5.00 using Hong Kong eBay parts.  I have received the connector so far and and am waiting for the usb 5v to 12v adapter.

So far works by plugging into my OBD2 port on the car or RV.  The signal on the WiFi is strong enough to reach inside my house.

No AT&T phone.  The device when shipped had a telephone number assigned and it was preconfigured to work out of the box.  Never talked to a human when ordering.  Did have to go to chat to get my online account set up.  I did work for AT&T for 30 years about 22 years ago but they didn't know that.

AT&T does not control our activities on the Mobley at all. We can stream video all day and night if we want to, although 2-3 hours at a time for a movie is more commonly what we do.

I just connected a Cradlepoint CT-350 router to the Mobley via USB cable.  Granted the Mobley supports 5 connections, but sometimes (especially if I use it at home) I need more connections.

The Cradlepoint router was sitting in the junk box from being used with a Verizon USB 3G modem 8 or 9 years ago.  I assume that a few of you also still have a Cradlepoint router sitting around.
There are a lot of people using routers to repeat the WiFi signal, but using the micro USB (covered by a rubber stopper) its just plug and go.  I still can use the 5 Mobley connections with that SSID and 16 more using the Cradlepoint's SSID.

Probably any USB router could be used.  For most people the 5 connections are enough for car or RV use.

Lou, are you using the Mobley's USB port to connect to the CTR-350? I'm using a Pepwave Surf Mini On-The-Go to connect to the Mobley using WiFi as WAN, since the USB connection, while recognized by the Pepwave, wouldn't connect to the Internet via the Mobley. I also have a Cradlepoint MBR95, but I haven't tried tethering that yet. I think I still have a CTR-350 somewhere too.

Oops! Now that I think about it, I don't think the CTR-350 has a USB input for tethering...  :o ;D

My CRT-350 was only used by me in the past to plug in a Verizon USB720 modem.  The CTR also works fine to plug in my smart phone for tethering. The CTR350 also has one RJ45 network jack that can be used to plug in a cable/dsl modem or use as a LAN jack.

Ah! Thanks, Bill. I'll have to dig around in my electronic storage and see if I still have the 350 tucked away. That also gives me hope that the Mobley will work with my Cradlepoint MBR95 when I get around to trying it. Right now, the Pepwave OTG is working well for us in WiFi as WAN mode.

Bought the Mobley a couple of months ago. Couldn't get a signal while we were in WY, but it's working just fine here in OH where we're spending time with kids and grandkids. Having three gandkids overnight with us, each of whom needed to be online with two devices, meant that we hit the Mobley's limit of 5 connections. Their parents couldn't get online, and I had to break out the VZW Jetpack.

Looks like I need to get a router hooked up. Unfortunately, all my old routers are in the garage at home in CA.

When I was a kid, I thought it was great to build a "crystal radio" and have something come out of the speaker headphones  :(

Pick up one of these; GL-AR150 $24 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015CYDVG8/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_2_w)
You can use WISP to connect to your mobley wireless or use a Usb cable to tether the mobley. The AR150 will use a connection speed of about 72 Mbps between your laptop and the router. The modem is powered with a usb cable also (Not included) Nice little router. I ordered the AR300 to see if it performs better.

So how is the Mobley working out for those that have purchased one? They are out of stock again on the web site. It also looks like AT&T insists on a monthly protection plan for $8. Is that the case or not?
Title: Re: AT&T Mobley is available again
Post by: DutchEagle on October 01, 2017, 08:40:36 AM
We now use the Mobley since July this year and really love it. Speed is not always great but we are always connected. Sometimes you just need to relocate the
Mobley in the coach to get more bars. I always open the admin page on my laptop and see if I need to relocate the Mobley. We are currently in week 3 of a 5-week trip and did not use any other way to get internet. (Our second trip since we started using the Mobley) Our cell phones show only a use of 1GB so far.
We have gone over the 22 GB every month but did not see any network management slowdown.

When you buy the Mobley online, one of the options is to decline the protection plan. We pay a total of $22.01 per month. ($20+taxes)

To get around the limit of 5 connected devices it is connected to a small travel router. I use WISP to re-transmit the signal. (WISP=Wireless Internet Service Provider) Both our cell phones, both our laptops, a wireless printer and the TV are connected to the router.

(I'm building configuring and selling the needed connectors and routers on eBay but currently sold out)

I ran into this too.

It also looked like you have to have an AT&T cell plan to use it at the $20/month rate.

Is there anyone out there that DOESN'T have any other AT&T plan and has a Mobley only from them and only pay $20 + taxes?

I had called a local store and they even had 2 in stock but when I asked about the $20 plan she knew nothing about that
and it sounded like you needed an account to get one and it would be an add on to a cell plan.

Does anyone have a link to documentation that I could print out and take to a store so they don't mess it up and I end up
getting charged much more or they tell me they can't do it without me having an AT&T cell phone plan?

Yes, when I bought my Mobley back in June, I had no other AT&T accounts, and my bill is around $22 per month with tax.

You need to talk to a connected car specialist, or have the local agent look through the plans in detail in the computer for the $20 per month connected car plan which is only available for the Mobley, it is NOT the $20 add on data plan which only shares minutes with an existing plan.

I have the plan with only the Mobley, nothing else! Our phones are still with Verizon.
A lot of employees in stores do not know about this plan, it is called the "connected car plan"  Maybe ask for a supervisor? I bought the Mobley online from the AT&T website.

People have tried that but they do not sell the sim card without the Mobley. What we are doing is not the intent of the "connected car" plan!

I checked this morning and they are sold out.

I know of people who went to a store and they ordered and shipped it to them.

Yep, what Klaas said. I hit them up about a month ago to see if they had another plan where I could just get the sim and the plan. Nope, nothing like it.  I am sure that they are figuring that if it is used in the car, it would keep down the usage since most people don't spend hours everyday in the car.

I've been using the SIM from my Mobley in a Netgear Unite hotspot for over three months now, with no complaints from AT&T so far. I read yesterday that the $20 Connected Car plan has been discontinued now, but that wasn't from an official source. I've also read, also from an unofficial source, that AT&T is considering offering the Mobley again due to the popularity of it, but they didn't say what data plan would be available for it or when it might reappear.

I went online today and the Mobley is back in stock.

HOWEVER when checking out they require you chose a plan and the $20 unlimited connected car plan is no where to be found.
Even after Chatting with an agent they said it was not on the website.  She recommended that I call some local stores.

One store had a mobley in stock but didn't have the plan without and unlimited cell plan from AT&T already.
The 6 other stores I called didn't have a mobley in stock and most didn't even know what it was.

So it seems we are out of luck and will have to wait to see if they bring that plan back - but for now it looks like it's dead.   :( :( :(

That's the way it looks to me. The Mobley is back, but not the Connected Car unlimited plan. I'm going to ask AT&T if I can add a second Mobley to my existing plan, but I should probably move the SIM back into my existing Mobley first. ;)

Well I'll have to see if they grandfather the connected car plan.  I am planning to move to a condo in a few months and plan to use the Mobley as my internet service.  In traveling this summer I used 43 gB of data a month all for 22.01 per month.  I never thought that I would be watching Netflix and Amazon using cell service, but with the Mobley and the Connected Car plan all is imaginable.

I hope that the Connected Car plan will continue for those who didn't already have the plan.

Well, it seems I can't add a second Mobley to my existing Connected Car plan. I'd have to switch to one of the more expensive shared plans to do that, which of course I don't want to do. I expect AT&T will grandfather our existing unlimited plans in, since that's their usual pattern when plans are dropped and new ones added. If nothing else, there's a lot of folks on the plan with 2-year contracts that need to be considered, although that's not a price guarantee.

Before you give up make sure to call ATT and ask for the Connected Car Group. They are the only people I talked to last spring that had any knowledge about the Moberly data plan for $20.00. At least two different stores including the manager of one informed me that there was no such plan.

That's who I spoke too. The fellow knew well what the $20 unlimited plan was, and tried several ways of making it happen, including a supervisor's override, but the system would not accept it.

Those of us who were lucky enough to get on the $20/mo plan are on 2 year contracts, after that AT&T can raise the rates if it chooses. Would be nice if they continued the plan at that point but who knows. Could be in another year or two there will be other competing unlimited data plans.

I was able to get on the program in August.
Did not commit to contract because I bought the unit out right.
Since I live in Canada I can't use at home but planned to have for travel and snowbirding starting winter of 2018.
My plan was to keep plan live even though not using for longer periods.

I have no experience with At&T, but would hope they will keep plan alive for those that are signed up regardless of contracts.

I think Scott is right. They would probably leave the device active and just bump the price to whatever they need to make it profitable. That is after all their main objective.

Historically, AT&T has grandfathered in existing plans for the most part, although as said, they do reserve the right to change their pricing without notice. Worst case, I'm hoping they'll just drop back to the original $40 price, which would still be a good deal.

Yep, I would still buy it at that price.  I would guess though that chances are a data cap would be part of any new plans.

I would probably drop it at $40 with a cap. I consider it a luxury and would just fall back on my 3G for more essential web activities and wait for the next promo. Already over $1400/yr at home for internet (no cable TV), donít need to spend another $500/yr. For a full-timer itís a good deal.

I agree, Marty, a cap is certainly a possibility...

Those of us who paid for our Mobleys are not on a contract so we may be the first to get a change.

Hope Not!

The other  BIG benefit for me is comparing AT&T data coverage to Verizon this summer. AT&T was as good if not better than VZW so I will be ready to drop the very expensive plan we are on when our current obligation are met.

I've compared over 25 locations and AT&T was faster in more than 2/3s of the locations. Several locations in Alaska Verizon was only good for voice, but AT&T had very good 3g service. Our current location north of Albuquerque shows ATT at 22MB and Verizon at 9MB.

I like my Mobley (especially the price) but have had a few instances were it didn't connect. I bought a WeBoost to help the Mobley connect but haven't tried it yet.
I just wish I could get more than 5 devices connected to it. Many WiFi as WAN options but I've heard that slows down the Mobley. Would like to connect a router via the Mobley's USB but options seem limited.

Forum Staffer Jeff alerted me to the option of using a small TP-Link Nano router with the Mobley. Works fine when we have 3 grandkids and 2-4 adults wanting to connect, some with 2 devices each.

>>Many WiFi as WAN options but I've heard that slows down the Mobley<<

I had this problem with an old Craddlepoint MBR95. The speed of a WIFI signal (not just Mobley) could be cut by 50% on "rebroadcast".
I just replaced it with a Pepwave surf SOHO and it has almost no loss using WIFI as WAN.

Tom, how difficult was this to configure with the Mobley?
Did you notice any slow down?
I would like to increase both the security and number of connectiuons that I can get from the mobley. Particularily for online banking/bill paying.
Between us, we would possibly have 6 connections icluding TV (tv seems to always stay connected even when off) just that one additional connection that causes problems.
Did Jeff give any specific instructions?
Thanks

As far as I recall, it was quite simple with their illustrated instructions.

I don't recall checking speeds but, in any event, the Mobley sees the TP-Link as one device, and you can still connect directly via one of Mobley's 4 other allowed connections.

Irrespective of the connection, for any online banking you need to use secure, encrypted connections and strong passwords. Other than that, I'm not sure how you'd "increase security". FWIW I use strong, secure passwords for everything, and use the KeyPass app to auto-type (or copy/paste) user names and passwords, because there's no way I could remember any of them.

We could have 8-10 devices online concurrently, some direct to Mobley and others via TP-Link. The grandkids are typically all watching online videos.

No, but they were not needed, given the instructions in the box.

It looks like the Nano is a WiFi as WAN only device. I don't see how you could tether it to a Mobley.

Here's the TP-Link nano (https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-Travel-Extender-TL-WR802N/dp/B00TQEX8BO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511155715&sr=8-1&keywords=tp-link+nano+wr802n+router) I have. It's a wireless N router and connects fine to the Mobley, and allows us to connect multiple devices.

Thanks Tom. I have heard from several sources that connecting some routers to the Mobley via WiFi as WAN (wirelessly) is a slower connection than a hard wired connection from the Mobley to the router. Maybe the nano is an exception.

Tim, I have no data on speed. The Nano may well slow things down but, at any point in time, I might be connected via Nano or direct to Mobley. Our primary need for more than Mobley's 5 connections is when we're at our town home in OH and we have 3 nearby grandkids staying over. Each of the kids can have 1 or 2 devices online at the same time. I'll pay more attention next time we're there, but it will be a while; My other half just had surgery with another to follow, so we decided we'd skip our winter sojourn this year, and hopefully return during school summer recess.

Separately, while at our place in WY we have local cable Internet (no ATT service) with a router in an outbuilding. The wireless connection to that router is hopeless, so I ran a 50 foot network cable to connect the router to the Nano in the coach, and all was well. Again, I don't recall if I took speed measurements or what the results were, but my wife and I were both streaming videos.

Here at our S&B primary residence, we have Comcast Cable internet, so no need for Mobley or Nano. FWIW I recently dropped T-mobile service after 12 or more years. They no longer provided any advantage over my other services, and ATT was half the monthly price.

Thanks Tom, too bad the nano doesn't have a USB plug for WAN teathering to the Mobley. But it sounds like the nano using WiFi as WAN is working well for you.

Sorry Tim, I may be confused ... but just for clarification, connection to Mobley is wireless only; It doesn't have a USB plug to connect to the Nano or any other device. So what would be the advantage of a USB plug on the Nano?

The Mobley actually has a USB receptacle, it is hidden behind a plastic cover on the same side as the reset button. Look for a little square cover, it is glued over the receptacle. I use a mini USB cable (same as the newer phone charger cables) to plug it into a GL.inet router and use the Mobley tethered instead of using the WISP protocol.
Connecting the Mobley tethered to a router does not slow communication down and has less interference with other 2Ghz devices.

My Mobley also tethers nicely to my Cradlepoint MBR-95 router. The only downside with it is that tethering seems to interfere with the WiFi direct side connecting to the Internet. There may be a setting on the Mobley for that, but I haven't found it yet. It's not a big issue though, since the Cradlepoint allows up to 255 connected devices. ;)

Heh! Well, I knew where my MBR-95 was, but it took some digging to find my older CTR-350 that was mentioned as working with the Mobley, but I couldn't get it to work tethered. My Pepwave Surf Mini On-The-Go doesn't work tethered to the Mobley either, but I'll work with the tech folks at Peplink on that one.

Good morning Tom, as others have mentioned the Mobley can be tether to a router via it's USB port. The cover on the Mobley's USB port makes it almost invisible. I'm no techie but as I've learned here and on other forums it seems that a router wired to a modem like the Mobley provides faster downloads and uploads than a wireless connection.

Correct me if I'm wrong but a router that will connect to a modem via a wireless connection is called a WiFi as WAN. It seems the big names in the business charge a bundle for these because they are not common ways of connecting a router to a modem so it's a nitch market. For me I got a Mobley because the plan is cheap and I don't want to spend a bundle to allow the Mobley to connect to more than 5 devices. There are cheap WiFi as WAN routers on Amazon and Isaac-1 posted one and went to great lengths getting it to connect tethered to the Mobley. He even posted the step by step instruction on another forum.

But it's been my experience with cheap Chinese electronics that they don't last or require constant fiddling to keep working. Sometimes the instructions if any with these things leave more than a lot to be desired. And their grammar can be comical. I haven't decided which router I'm going to get and it sounds like the nano has served you well.

The travel router arrived today. TP-Link TL-WR802N.
Connected to my iphone personal hotspot to check out.
Works well and easy to set up.
Speeds as follows:
Direct tether to phone download 6.56 Mbps , upload 5.05 Mbps
Connected to tp link download 6.39 Mbps, upload 3.16 Mbps

Nothing wrong with those numbers.
Also tested again connected to phone and the wired ethernet connection, both worked well at same time.
Had to do all through phone because in Canada the Mobley will not connect. I
Just getting ready for travel in spring.
Tom, thanks for sharing router info.
