Going through the park would certainly be the "shortest", but...because of traffic can be a challenge! Next best would be, down to Thermopolis, through the Windriver Canyon to Riverton, to Dubois, across Togwotee Pass, then on into Teton Park. If you don't take the Yellowstone route, Thermpoolis has some pretty good stuff ( Wyo. Dinosaur Museum, river rafting through the canyon [ if not too late in season], Hot Springs State Park, and great trout fishing in canyon to town [ guided or do it yourself]). Then the drive across Togwotee Pass is quite pretty country as you parallel the Wind River.

130 miles longer going through the non park route.

If you left Cody about 6-7am you won't find traffic as bad inside the park as is will be if leave Cody about 9 or 10am.

Is it easy pulling a 39' fifth wheel this way

I would lean towards taking the Yellowstone route, the roads in the park are a bit narrow, but at least the SE part of the park loop road has a few inches of pavement past the white stripe, unlike the NE part of the loop where the pavement 6 - 12 inches narrower.  The 45 mph speed limit in the park helps too and the section of road you need to take here is mostly free of steep grades once you get the lake.

Jaw111,  If you are comfortable with your rig... should be no problem. A personal thing!  Your biggest issues will be narrow roads and stupid people....lots of stupid people!

The other big question is what time of year are you going?

Yes, time of year is a big factor... Going thru the park is no problem for your rig, but traffic is horrible. I would suggest staying on the NorthFork of the Shoshone Forest the night before. You can be at Three Mile Campground, which is 3 miles from East Entrance and get into park very early..

Also, where are you staying in Teton area, I would suggestion reservations!!!! We drive that road often and is no problem IF you are used to going over a few passes. Like Sylvan Pass is the first one, we are used to them, but sometimes people don't like mountain passes.

But yes, time of year is number 1 concern!
