Title: Death Valley rally November 4-11 2018
Post by: UTTransplant on February 23, 2018, 04:58:11 PM
Kevin and I just love Death Valley, and we have been lucky enough to get there during the 49ers Encampment for the last two years. I am organizing a RVForum rally for others interested. The camping area has no hookups, though central water and sewer dump are available. Price for the campground (Sunset) is $14/night or $7 with a senior pass. The average temps at this time of year are about 80 as a high and 45-50 as a low. However we have been there with temps in the 90s and lows around 40 (not at the same time though!). Generator hours are generous. As for activities there will be lots and lots of music, chataqua presentations by historical re-enactors, some primitive road adventures (mostly suitable for SUVs), gorgeous views, an art show, vendors, etc. Rally attendees will get together each day for a Happy Hour at our campsite with our propane fire pit (no wood or charcoal fires allowed). The website for the 49ers can be found at http://www.deathvalley49ers.org/ While you donít have to join, I highly encourage attendees to do so. They do a lot of good with the money through grants to the park and scholarships.

Please reply to this message if you are interested.

We donít quite have our route planned out yet other than knowing we want to do Quartzite in January but this sounds really interesting. We could probably put it on our schedule and then find other things in the area to check out before we head to Arizona  8)

Even if it just comes up with two rigs, I will go ahead and put it on the calendar as a rally. Look for more information and a sign up in the next few hours.

We leave the US on 31st October and had considered extending our stay to include the 49ers but it means delaying our arrival next year so decided against it.  We will definitely visit Death Valley again as it is just fantastic.  There is a Facebook group dedicated to Death Valley and it is definitely giving us some ideas of places to go that we haven't seen yet.  We met a couple last year that go to this rally every year and love it.

I am jealous, I love Death Valley and would love to attend but it is way too far away from me and my RV is now stationary. I will be thinking of you lucky people.

Hmm, we'll be hosting near Bishop, Ca, so only like 178 miles away.  Not sure yet when the campground closes, but I would think somewhere around the 1st of November.  Might just mosey that way.
Not planning anything this far out.  Did that last year and changed every single plan we made...twice.

I generally don't plan that far ahead  ;) but since my winter digs are nearby in Pahrump, there's a good chance I'll be able to wander over!

I almost went to the 49er Encampment this year, but when I made a day trip in late September to view a presentation at the Visitor's Center about the Scotty's Castle flood recovery, Furnace Creek Ranch and the Inn were completely torn up by construction and the rangers weren't sure Sunset Campground would open at all this year except for the contracted week of the Encampment.

Things should be back to normal by November, although at this point it looks like Scotty's Castle and maybe Mesquite Campground in the northern part of the park will remain closed until 2020.

This looks really promising for us.  I am already off work that week.  Death Valley has been a bucket list place for me.  Although we live in So Cal, we have never been to Death Valley.  It would be great to see you guys again after meeting you at the Yosemite Rally last May.  After tax season, I will be able to firm things up.  Hope it works out.  Thanks for organizing this!

Just wondering how early one should plan on arriving to secure a site. If the event starts on Nov 4th, would getting there a day or two early be good enough? Since we've never been and campgrounds are first come first serve....I'm sure it gets crowded and it looks like some Death Valley campgrounds will remain closed due to damage from flooding last year.
Title: Re: Death Valley rally November 4-11 2018
Post by: Wendy on March 11, 2018, 11:35:31 PM
The only campground thatís closed due to flood damage is Mesquite on the far north side of the park, and it should be open in the fall if not sooner. Years ago, all the campgrounds would fill up a week before the 49ers official dates but thatís not the case any more. Last year, Sunset campground had spaces the whole Encampment. Furnace  Creek campground will be totally booked up with reservations days after the reservations open up.
Title: Re: Death Valley rally November 4-11 2018
Post by: UTTransplant on March 12, 2018, 09:51:37 AM
I understand the anxiousness of whether a spot will be available. We felt the same when we first came to the Encampment two years ago. However Sunset never fills. If the main part is full, they open up overflow areas. When those fill, they open up more! The place is absolutely huge, and even during busy Encampments (like 2 years ago) there were spots always available in the 4 or 5 overflow areas. Last year was much smaller with the uncertainties, and only two overflow areas were opened. The NPS campground with reservations (Furnace Creek) and the private campground with reservations (Fiddlerís) are probably already reserved, but there will be space in Sunset.

As for getting there early, Kevin and I will be arriving early, mostly because we love the place and partly to try to get a spot with enough space for folks to hang out. You really donít need to come early to find a spot. Note that this isnít like a rally where we will all be camped together. I bought a RV Forum flag at the Quartzsite rally so you will be able to find us. We will also post what site we are in when we get set up. I am sure we will be spread out through the campground, but that should be fine.

FWIW, Sunset Campground was the original landing strip for Furnace Creek Ranch.  If you bring up the Google Maps satellite view, you can still see the outline of the runway.

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.4604551,-116.8645158,1169m/data=!3m1!1e3 (https://www.google.com/maps/@36.4604551,-116.8645158,1169m/data=!3m1!1e3)

The campground was newly opened when I was there with my family in the 1960s and camping was restricted to the runway itself, extending from the north overflow area through the east side of the present campground to the south overflow area.  Restrooms were provided by portable trailers in the center section.

Since then they've expanded the campground towards Furnace Creek Ranch (at the time you had to cross barren ground to get from the campground to Furnace Creek) and made the remaining parts of the runway into overflow areas.

If you pan west and look at the new airport, you can see like the Sunset Campground runway, it was originally built to handle large aircraft, probably as a WWII emergency landing strip, then shrunk to it's present small aircraft configuration.

Lou, thanks for that link. Fascinating. I always noticed the overflow areas were linear, and now I see they are part of the old runway. Also interesting that the orientation of the two runways are different.

Also interesting that the orientation of the two runways are different.

Runway orientations (or headings) are different by design, to allow landing when the wind is strong and not from a direction favorable for the primary runway, since aircraft normally land into the wind and the amount of crosswind they can handle is limited.

Understood. I am not a pilot, but I worked as an engineer for a major aerospace company in their displays and flight management system groups, among other areas. I would have thought both runways, the old one and the new one, would have been oriented in the same direction since I assume the winds havenít changed. Maybe they oriented based on a compromise with terrain?

OK...Good info! I kinda figured we all would be in different area's and such but I guess I thought it was harder to get into Sunset, so that's good news too. I suppose I'll get there early just the same and maybe spend a few days in Pahrump before heading to Sunset. Thanks again for all the info. :-)

We almost always stop in Pahrump a couple of days before going into Death Valley and after leaving to do laundry, clean the dust out of the coach and buy groceries. Oh, and gas up, fuel is EXPENSIVE in Death Valley.

Yeah, Pahrump gas and diesel is a good deal, about half what you'll pay in Death Valley and 20-30 cents per gallon lower than Las Vegas prices.   Cheaper real estate and less taxes here.   :)

Take a look at it in Google Earth. I gave the explanation because I see two intersecting old runways and one new one, with one old one having the same heading (almost) as the new one and the other being angled 20ļ to 30ļ more westerly, so from your post I thought you might not understand the aircraft wind needs (guess you do, though). The new runway is just in the corner of Lou's picture, west of the highway and oasis, while looking at the whole thing in Google Earth the new one looks to be about the same heading as one old, while in Lou's picture there appears to be a very slight difference.

We are still on! Kevin and I have our trip planned pretty well. We are starting from Iowa in late September, heading to Alabama for some warranty work on the coach then back up to Missouri to canoe the Current River with friends then to Oklahoma City to see family then continuing on I-40 West. We will be in Death Valley at least a few days before the rally starts getting things organized. We now have a big flagpole we can fly the RVForum flag from that will make us even easier to find. We will also probably be the only folks in Death Valley with a canoe!

Who else is interested? The 49ers Encampment is generally great fun. Note DVNP had their highest average temperature ever during July so make sure the generators are working in case the heat stays around. The average high temp is only 80 that time of year, but we all know how temperatures have been this year. I will keep an eye on the long range forecasts and give as much info as I can as we get closer. We did have a high in the mid 90s a few years ago. I will also let people know as soon as the 49ers information is out.

Pam, it looks like we might be running into each other along the way. Ive had to delay leaving Minnesota until I can get things in order here. Looks like mid september. I will probably forget about Oregon and head down to Oklahoma, staying out at Kaw lake for a while, but popping down to Norman for a day or so. A quick stop in San Antonio for annual medical appointments at the end of October, then will head that way. Not sure when I will get there, but I will make it.

We will hit the IRV2 Rally in Pahrump mid Sept, then head over to Parker, AZ for about 5 weeks altogether(so we'll be use to the heat by then):-), then head back over towards Death Valley. Probably get into Death Valley at least a couple days early, I think!!!   Hoping to make it to the Quartzsite event this year again but will wait and see.

I still highly recommend it since you will get the schedule of all events plus the money goes to the event plus supporting the park. There are some activities where people will check for a membership button, but the music isnít one of them. The 49ers give grants to the park plus support scholarships for college students in the area. They also spend a significant amount of money setting up and coordinating the event itself.

Unless the Government shuts down again, Sunset will be open. The information about limited opening was in 2017 thank goodness. We are also planning on being there a few days early, but exactly when is an open question.

Hi all..
We are still planning on being there although we are picking up two senior dogs( adopting 2 13+ year old Cavaliers) so I'm a tad concerned about temps. Thinking of staying at that Longstreet Casino/ RV park( never stayed there but it looks to be driveable into the event area)? I guess I won't decide this until we get closer to the event and see how the weather is.
Yes, I am one of those that has to keep the doggies happy and comfy...😀 Anyone ever stay at Longstreet? hi

Watch the weather and make your decision at the last minute. We always travel with our cats, and they do fine as long as the high is below 90. The air is very dry and just doesnít hold the heat the way a humid climate does. We make sure to pull the blinds on the south and west sides of the RV while leaving the other windows open and running a fan. Above 90 and we have to turn the generator on and have the AC running. However the average high is around 80 so you will probably be fine. Note that Sunset campground has very liberal generator hours.

Note they wonít be accepting memberships online this year, only at the Encampment, and only with cash or check. There are many activities that donít require a membership, but I highly recommend you get one ($35 for a single, $60 for a family). They not only set up the Encampment and pay for many performers, but they also provide scholarships and grants to the park. They have already published this yearís schedule. It is at http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/1634844/27977237/1535518213197/2018+Death+Valley+49ers+Encampment+Events.pdf?token=acHpbxam0FBiwj%2Ft2rzgFiw%2BBIE%3D if you want to see what kinds of activities are going on. All amateur musicians should be looking at the Coyote Howl on Wednesday which is an open mic show. We intend on being there a few days in advance, just because we love the place so much. You can come whenever you like, whether a few days or for the entire week. All activities will be near/at the Sunset campground.

Remember this is dry camping with no hookups at the sites. There are generous generator hours, two dump stations with water fill, and very nice flush restrooms with showers. You can buy shower/pool passes at the motel for a reasonable amount too. We will generally be congregating at our campsite for Happy Hour around 4:00 each day. When we get settled, I will post our site number, but you should also be able to find us from our RVForum flag.

If you have Facebook, be sure and follow Death Valley Road Conditions. It is an official park site with up to date information about the back country roads. Hope to see you there.

Bring your guitar Larry! There are some nice opportunities for musicians.
Larry definitely bring your guitar to accompany Pam's beautiful voice.  We'd like to attend but doubtful that it will fit in our schedule.

I read an interesting article about things to do and see in Death Valley from the point of view of a couple from the UK. The descriptions are pretty good, and he pictures give a real taste of the area. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/a-far-out-guide-to-visiting-death-valley-california/

If you're planning on heading through Pahrump on your way to or from Death Valley, Hwy 160 going "over the hump" is being widened to four lanes through Mountain Springs.  This will be a two year project, and the initial portion involves extensive dynamiting to widen the canyon east of the summit.

Starting tomorrow (Sept 24) through mid-October the highway will be closed from 12:45 PM to 3:00 PM on alternating workdays to accomodate the blasting and cleanup.  That's according to the road sign I saw as I went through there today, the newspaper article below says the road will be closed from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM.

Additional blasting will happen closer to Mountain Springs in late October and early November, then there will be a break before more blasting in 2019.  The schedules for this work have yet to be announced.

Here's the info as presented in the Pahrump Valley Times this week:

https://pvtimes.com/news/blasting-near-pahrump-in-mountain-pass-could-delay-las-vegas-commute/ (https://pvtimes.com/news/blasting-near-pahrump-in-mountain-pass-could-delay-las-vegas-commute/)

The bypass is to take US 95 north out of Las Vegas, then Hwy 160 south to get to Pahrump.  This is about 10 minutes longer from downtown Las Vegas than going over Hwy 160 from the south.

If you're going directly to Death Valley, go north on US 95 from Las Vegas and take either NV 373 at Amargosa Valley south to Death Valley Junction, then 190 west to Furnace Creek.  Or continue to Beatty and enter Death Valley from there.

Unfortunately, Steve and Dee are not going to be able to make this rally.  Post lots of pictures.  Still hope to make it to Death Valley some day.

Too bad Steve and Dee. I was looking forward to seeing you again. You know this is an easy rally to just show up for part of it, donít you? The last weekend has more of the entertainment, but any time during the week will work. Sunset campground never gets full; they just keep opening up more overflow lots!

I got a very informative multi page email from the 49ers about what is happening at the Encampment. It is too big too post, so if people send me their email address using the little envelope icon I will forward the message. It might take a day or so since I have extremely limited internet, but I will get it out.

My plan is to leave on Saturday, stopping for one night in Ft Stockton, Deming, Mesa, then in Pahrump. I would like to stop there for a couple of days to do laundry and fill and dump tanks etc. There is an escapees park there, but they dont take reservations. Anyone know what the chances are of them having a spot there or are they pretty full up? I should be there on the 30th.

Unfortunately Caryl, many other people going to the Encampment have the same idea.  I have a space in the Escapees park and in the past few days we have had to put several people in the boondocking area next to the park entrance, this hasn't happened since last spring.  Other RV parks in town are the same way, when I went shopping this afternoon I noticed Saddle West Casino's RV park along Hwy 160 has also filled up and the number of RVs on the road has definitely increased.

On the good side, the October weather has been great - daytime highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the 50s.

I suggest consulting RVParkreview.com and see what's available before you get here.  For what it's worth, gas and diesel prices in Pahrump are about 20-30 cents cheaper than in Las Vegas and about half what you would have to pay in Death Valley.

Also check with the Nevada DOT website https://www.nevadadot.com/Home/Components/News/News/3940/395?fsiteid=1 (https://www.nevadadot.com/Home/Components/News/News/3940/395?fsiteid=1) or call 511 for the latest highway information.  They're blasting the canyon on hwy 160 over the summit between Pahrump and Las Vegas to widen the road so it's being closed for a couple of hours mid-day every other day or two.

Thanks Lou. I will check into the blasting schedule and the park review site. Im not opposed to boondocking in Pahrump, I just need a place to empty tanks and fill water and fuel up before heading to the rally.

Definitely fuel up in Pahrump, but Sunset campground does have water and a dump available if you run out of options. Get your grocery basics in Pahrump too. The DV store isnít very big though it does have things like some produce and milk. After Louís comment, we made a reservation at Wine Ridge RV Resort for one night. Expensive, but staying in DV will be cheap enough to make up for it.

Thanks for this info Lou. I got to Pahrump today. I was going to go into Las Vegas tomorrow, but decided to skip it. Driving in this wind wore me out. I'll just wander around Pahrump tomorrow and see the sights.

The wind yesterday was really bad! There is quite a bit of,haze in the valley from left over smoke, but yesterday the dust blew so much as to almost hide the mountains to northwest. I had planned to visit Father Crowley point hoping to see the fighter planes, but I doubt they are training in this wind.

We spoke to an avid watcher when we were there who said Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's are the best days and  between 8am to 1pm best times. He had seen 12. We got there after 2 and saw none!

I have heard the same. I figure if I leave the campground about 8:00 and bring my lunch I might get lucky! I did hear jets in the distance today at the campground, but didnít see them.

We will have our first official meeting at 4:00 pm at campsite H1. Bring your favorite beverage, a chair, and a snack if you want. We will talk about schedule options and do some planning. So far I know there are four of us, but I think a few more will wonder in during the week. Internet service is abysmal here (a private network) so I canít post the picture I have so far. Eventually we will find some wifi and get them up. We have had some nice sightseeing, and we saw fighters at Rainbow canyon!

Having been planning on being there, we had a late change of plans and won't make it this year. WE did however check out Long Street Casino/RV Park. While there is not much to it, it certainly would be an option for some depending on ones needs. I can imagine us staying there when we do make it to the 49er event.  I hope the wind dies down for ya all and you all have a Great time....hopefully next year, I can plan a little better and finally check this off the bucket list.

I finally got to Stovepipe Wells and decent Verizon data coverage so I can post. We have a small group - Dan and Marge West, Caryl, and Mark and Vickie Shorter. As usual, the campground was viritually empty when we arrived a week ago, but even the overflow lots are open now. Lots and lots of 49ers plus the regular tourists. Also as usual, it is the gorgeous scenery that attracts me year after year.

Picture 1 is at sunset from our campsite, no filter or post processing. Yup, the sunsets are really that gorgeous.
Pictures 2 - 4 show there are lots of colors in Death Valley beyond shades of brown.
Pictures 5 - 6 are from the Cherry Gordon mining town just outside the park above the Owns Valley. We got a private tour of the privately owned town. There are a number of partially restored buildings including a hotel and an incredible indoor hoist house with the man elevator showing. Pretty cool.

Tomorrow we will drive Titus Canyon with the Shorters, a lovely high clearance road with more ghost towns. Dan and Marge said they were leaving today so they drove it yesterday. Maybe he will post some pictures too.

I forgot these pictures! We drove the Westside Road yesterday, a sand and gravel road west of the main part of Badwater Basin. The wagon train that travels from near Ridgecrest every year as also driving the road, heading toward their parade entrance on Friday. Small horses, big horses, mules, and miniature horses were in abundance. There were eleven wagons and a number of horseback riders, but I only took pictures of the wagons, especially the ones with the miniature horses.
