Title: Yellowstone 2016 or Bust! Forum Rally May 15 through May 21, 2016
Post by: Kim (skyking4ar2) Bertram on May 29, 2015, 09:36:25 PM
This is an early announcement for those who might consider participating, but a Forum Rally (Frally, if you will) is forming for May, 2016 to explore all things Yellowstone.

Because Yellowstone requires a bit of planning for most folks, we want to get people thinking about whether it fits on their calendar.

We are currently negotiating rates and space at Yellowstone Grizzly in West Yellowstone, which is a great park and venue just outside the west gate of YNP. It provides great amenities and convenience to the local area as well as the park.

A distinct possibility is to keep the rally open for a two week span to accommodate travel at that time of the year which can be interesting and to slip in front of the typical summer season and crowds just a bit. A lot of folks try to hit the park too fast and do not realize the extreme size of the place so possibly the extra time will benefit those who need or want it. Also, some may want to blow in and then blow down the road and this accommodates that notion as well.

This is also a special invitation to those here who have never participated in a rally or Forum rally and/or who have never been to Yellowstone. We'd like to have as many newcomers as possible and insure everyone gets everything they want from the Yellowstone experience.

Christi and I have had two months stints in the Yellowstone area twice in the last four years and hope we can transfer some of that excitement to others. It is truly one of the more amazing destination parks in the country, if not the world.

I hope you will consider joining us!

I will be watching as well.  We have hit Yellowstone every July for the past 7+ years but last year we joined Don & MaryAnn @ Grizzly in September and loved the fall colors, cooler weather and less crowds, plus Don & MaryAnn were very fun to hang with.  We liked fall so much that we have a week booked @ Grizzly for this September again. ;D

I will keep an eye on this thread where it is only about a 5-hour drive for us we may be able to juggle things around.

Mike.

We're booked for Grizzly this September as well, but we are down for another trip in the spring...seeing the fall colors followed by the spring birth sounds awesome to me.

When I used to fly with the Confederate Air Force (Commemorative now), there was always a big pilot, crew, and airshow staff safety meeting before each show.

You can expect something similar when you get to Grizzly because of stuff like this! (http://news.yahoo.com/bison-seriously-injures-2nd-yellowstone-tourist-3-weeks-072354157.html)  8)

You would hope it would not be needed, but ....

Kim, both Yellowstone and Halifax are at the same 44.6 degrees latitude, and I can assure you that although it is often cool and foggy in the spring, we haven't had a 4 to 6 inch snowfall in June.   :o  Heck, in 2010 we saw snow going over the Sierras in California in early June.
Besides, not wanting to be cold , wet and clearing snow is what moved us to get a place in Florida where it has been north of 80 for almost 2 months.

Yellowstone presents some unique weather challenges as natives of the area, like Jim Godward, will attest.

While you won't need snowshoes in the summer, you won't be up on Beartooth Pass in flip flops, either. There are some elevations in the park and it's just smart to bring the kind of clothing that lends itself to layering and rapid changes in the weather in the park.

There are no shortages of YNP sweatshirts in the gift shops! :)

Kim

p.s. this picture was on May 19, 2011 right after they opened one of the north loops in the park.

Ahhhh the memories...........
This was the last time we took a trip to Zion,Bryce and Yellowstone.

Christine on our FIRST day, stepped off the tour bus that parked too far away from the curb, and fell face long into a wooden fence.
Treated at little clinic at Zion then transferred to hospital at St. George

That sounds like a blast! It's been 10 years since we were at YNP...and that trip was a quick one and done...just passed through on the way home. (we were looking at the possibility of moving to Cody or one of the surrounding towns)
We thought about making the trip this year with our grandkids...but that didn't pan out.

Put me down as a "Definite Maybe."

Kim - Since I am new to RVing, please tell me what happens at a rally. My wife and I planned out a 90 day trip to Yellowstone and beyond for 2019 and I was seriously looking at Grizzly, so your plans for next year look appealing to me. The two things that might ward me off would be it being sooner than we had planned and earlier in the year. After seeing your picture of six feet of snow, I might balk. There is a reason why I moved to SW Florida from the Midwest.

But seriously, please clue me into what a rally is all about so we will have a better idea of whether or not it is something in which we would like to participate.

I have only been to one Rally at Moab, and what I learned is that rallies are a bunch of like minded people enjoying what they enjoy most and doing it in a group. I am signed up for a number of rallies in the coming months including this one. After we enjoyed our first rally as much as we did, we can't wait for the next.

John,

Different groups rally differently, but I can tell you what you might expect at the YNP rally.

RV Forum rallies emphasize integrating new folks in with longer term members, and sometimes longer term members have not been to a Forum rally, if that makes sense.

In my case, for this rally, the emphasis will be on getting folks the most information and experience in the short week everyone has to enjoy this vast (3,000,000 acre) national treasure.

There will be folks who gravitate towards hiking, some for touring, some for photography, some to just see what they can see. There will be some group get togethers, at least one group dinner, possibly a pot luck, and who know what other surprises.

While there will be some structure to make sure folks can enjoy this rally in groups, you are not REQUIRED to do anything you don't want. Typically there is a happy hour where folks interact, tell their story of the day, and connect with others they missed that day. Happy hour can be hit or miss because folks are out having fun, so we will have to see how that works in YNP where the daylight will seem to go on forever.

The rally actually takes own its own course as folks suggest things, group up, and then decide how they want to enjoy their day.

I think you will find that showing up is your first and only obligation, and after that, you will find a pace with folks you'll like.

You should not let the snow fool you, because that should be isolated to some of the upper elevations at that time, there may be a road closure or two in the park, but the difference at that time of the year will be the amount of people in the park itself. Single lane roads don't lend themselves to the bee-jillion tourists who come when school gets out, and that will be in your favor for crossing the park at the maximum 45 mph speed limit.

Stay with this thread and decide for yourself if these are the kind of people you want to spend some time with. The majority of the folks we travel with over the year we meet at an RV Forum rally.

We hope you can make it!

Kim

John,

Kim summed things up fairly well, but I might suggest that you look at the Quartzsite and Palo Duro rally threads in this subforum for an additional glimpse of things sort of "as they happened." The forum is used for part of the communication within the rally and also for letting others on the forum know what they're missing. We also have some folks who've hung up their keys but still want to keep up with what folks are doing, so some of the posts are also aimed in that direction.

So look up those other rally threads and follow day-by-day.

Welcome --

RVForum rallies are AWESOME!!!!

Kim, John and Larry all summed it up pretty well.  My wife and I are fairly new to the group and were welcomed in with open arms, even our son was treated like one of the group in a very short time.  This really is a great group of friends which you will see within the first day.

Many group activities if you choose but if you want to go off by yourself and just take little bites of the group we understand.  Many of my co-workers still don't understand how my wife and I can have so much fun with people we just met on the internet. ;)

I must caution you though, you could potentially have so much fun and enjoy it so much they may talk you into hosting a rally of your own without you even knowing what happened. ;D

Mike.

Guys, thanks for all the info and input. It sounds to me like a rally would be right up our alley. Rally alley, never mind. We are the friendly sort, both of us having worked in guest service industries for most of our careers and we enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences. That's one of the biggest reasons we got into RVing.

I don't know if we'll be able to make a Yellowstone rally next year, but if you have another one in three or four years, count us in.

Keep an eye on this space, because there are likely to be several other rallies between now and then, also; Quartzsite and Moab, to name a couple. Plus there are often chances for mini-rallies, that is, a brief get-together of two or more for dinner or other things.

Hey Kevin, I hope your following Cindy's lead.  There's just too much to see and do when limited to weekends and short vacations.  If you haven't been to Yellowstone, you're going to love it.  Nothing like trying to navigate the toad through a herd of buffalo moseying along while crossing the road in front of you.

Toad heck, the first time we were at YNP we were arriving with a 5th wheel and our 1 ton Dodge dually. While driving up the entry road checking out the sites. Up ahead I saw what looked like a huge dark figure in a giant hat coming towards me in the other lane. It was in the shade of some trees so I couldn't make out what it was, but something told me to slow down.  So I slowed to a crawl just in time for the sunlight to hit this 2000# Bison running towards me in the opposite direction in the traffic lane!  It ran passed and kind of glanced up at me, but never slowed down.  Right then I knew this was going to be an interesting campground!

Hey Sarge, How do you typically do this road trip? single destination back and forth and how long does it take you one way?

thanks
Sam

When we were working we did it much like Steve N Dee.  Now that we are retired we take a much more leisurely pace. Like on this trip, we are staying about a week in most places and taking time to see more local sights.  If fact, I have a blog that I am doing here on the forum where I document the travels:  http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,83325.0.html

We are fitting the 2016 YNP rally in on our way to Maine and the Maratimes next year.

That's right, rub it in Marty!! :D Gary, about eight years ago, Cyndi Jo, the kids and I went to Yellowstone in our last motorhome.. Stayed at Fishing Brige and had a blast. When Kim started talking about this rally, we looked at each other and said, "Let's go." I promised myself I wouldn't accept any jobs for a couple of weeks around the rally dates. Now... if the weather will just cooperate.

Stephan... meeting new folks is a lot of what these rallys are all about. We've been forum members for five years but, due to our work schedules, we've only had time to attend a couple rallies ourselves. You can hang out with everyone, do your own thing or a combo of both. We hope you can make it!

Kim, we would like to join the group, count us in. We have stayed at Grizzley several times, love it. We need a space in the back by the dog run or the guys will mutiny. They think those are their chipmunks in the woods, friends only, not lunch.

Kim,

If we are working again next year at Yellowstone we would be happy to provide any information we might have available. I can tell you, visitation to the park is up 24% over last year! There have been many Bison, Elk, Bear, and Bear jams. :-) Fortunately, you will avoid much of that by coming in May. I'm happy to see you provided some information on the wildlife. Too many people think Yellowstone is full of tame animals. We have had two Bison attacks here at Old Faithful this year.

With 2.2 million acres, it takes time to fully enjoy Yellowstone.

Today's factoid: 13 states and 2 foreign countries are represented by the current list of attendees, with a large sprinkle of folks new to both the rally and Yellowstone experience...it will be a great mix of people who will have a great time!

Time flies when you are on RV time!

I'd be careful about making your own reservations because of the rally rates and placement in the park. That will create some real confusion with Grizzly that we are trying to avoid from rallies past and to suit the park's request.

We have a block of sites that will be reserved to us. It is not necessary to pre-register yet because of the block of sites.

It is not that I was trying to get ahead of the curve, I had to cancel some reservations, and after talking with her supervisor they allowed me to change my reservations to the rally dates, knowing that I am with the rally.  By moving the reservation dates instead of cancelling saved me the cancellation fee.

As much as I hate to say it...yes. The family business is rocking right now and Susan can't take off to go to Yellowstone. I have been looking forward to going and seeing you guys.

You are going to St. George in October...right? Even though Susan won't be going to St. George either, I will most definitely be there, God willing.

We currently have 26 prospective Frally folks on the list (see here (http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,84928.0.html)) and we are a good eight months away. It's a great mix of very experienced and long time Forum folks and plenty of new suspects.

At the moment, I have a block of 40 sites spoken for and we can add more. I suspect there be the usual number of folks who planned well, but life happened, and others who did not get excited until the last minute. We'll attempt to accommodate all comers.

If you have not spoken up, read the FAQ, and let me know as soon as you get past the 50/50 stage.

Because of the way Grizzly handles rallies, it is very likely we will gather the money prior to or at your arrival and pay in one fell swoop. If you have any kind of problem with that method, as opposed to ringing up in the office, please private message or email me and I will be glad to address your concerns.

As any of you who spend any time in YNP know, the month of May can be a mixed weather bag and we'll talk more about that as the time gets closer, but this is a rain, snow, or shine event.

Stay tuned!

Somehow I never saw this thread.  Have now.  I won't have my rig at the rally, but will be close by as I work at Old Faithful.  Jim & Pat Dick work with us, so the 4 of us will be available for whatever we can help out with.

One consideration for May, many of the visitor centers wiil not yet be open, Memorial Day weekend is when most open.  Old Faithful, Canyon and Mammoth will be.  Some roads may not yet be open, some years Craigs Pass, from Old Faithful to Grant and the lake road was not open.  Other times it has been open, but it gets closed due to weather.  Dunraven Pass may also still be closed, this pass often does not open until Memorial Day weekend.

Feel free to contact me or the Dicks (speaking for them), for information.

Best part of this time of year is that the critters are being born.  You will see the baby bison playing tag and following moms.  You will see the early lambs, and many other species.  This lasts from end of April to sometime in June.

Know that no matter the weather or the open or closed roads, you will see some of the most amazing scenery around our wonderful world.

Well, Bill!

Your value to the rally would be immeasurable! We'll stay in touch...

Regardless of what is open and what is not, we will all have a Yellowstone good time! We have a nice crowd of first timers and a good crowd of repeat offenders so it should be a great experience for all.

All of our trips to the park have been in this time period and we have never been disappointed.

All we have to do now is wait and see what El Nino decides and how much snow we will have to shovel out of Grizzly!

See you sooner than you think!

Yes Bill,

Any suggestions you might have to help orient and guide us toward activities at the Park would be deeply appreciated.  One question we have been discussing... if we want to hire some "guides" to see some of the back country, especially via horseback, how do we proceed?  Probably need reservations way ahead of time?  But where to start?  Google?  We've been to YNP several times over the years but never really got past the major tourist areas, yet, as you said, there are millions of acres and probably ways to see more.  A few "day trips" would be ideal... but other options could work.

After a lot of digging, it appears McAfee security software, unbeknownst to me, found your email unfit to deliver, and buried it in my Outlook folders. I have located them all, I think, and will be sorting all of that out shortly.

I apologize for the inconvenience but I was upgrading my systems and was not familiar with a newer version and how it interacted with Outlook.  :'(

Thanks for the comment.  Maybe there are other options for guided tours of the remote areas?  We've been there a few times in the past and always say, "Next time, we are going to find a way to visit some of the back country places that we hear about".  We've read about X=country ski tours; snowmobile tours; horse-back tours; hiking tours; etc but before we pick something off the web, we thought we ask here if anyone has suggestions.

Thx, G.

The best way to experience the back country is to hike. There are over 900 miles of hiking trails in Yellowstone. It is free. My favorite Yellowstone hike is Mystic Falls.

For those who had to survive 2015 before planning for 2016, we hope you made it in good shape. But it's a new year, time to start scheduling, and the Yellowstone 2016 Rally is just 127 days from now!

See this FAQ (http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,84928.0.html) if you have not yet put your name on the list, see who is on the list, and get some other current information.

We are starting to make some harder plans on how to structure this rally which will be a little different than some you may have attended because of the vast amount of ground everyone has to cover in a day's time and we want to be sure to integrate the newbies with the more experienced as it relates to both RV'ing and Yellowstone itself.

Get on the list! If your plans change, we can deal with it!

This is our first rally and our first trip to Yellow Stone. This is not our first trip in our MH. Last year we went to Vegas, South and North rim Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion. We traveled for over a month. This year Yellow Stone is just our first stop. We are making plans now but we intend to stay out over a month again this year. I can hardly wait.

Gary I hate to pick Wendy over you, actually I don't mind it at all, but she is right.  However, if you hit Kim's link, in the first post, there is a FAQ link, and that one works.  Kim, it might be best if you fix the link or a lot of people won't get to it.

Ed, you know I found that screw that you gave us when you fixed our dash radio.  If you're not going to be nice, I'm going to keep it.

Steven, where do you plan to travel after Yellowstone?

The best way to experience the back country is to hike. There are over 900 miles of hiking trails in Yellowstone. It is free. My favorite Yellowstone hike is Mystic Falls.

Not everyone can hike... unfortunate but true.

Max, to answer your question, we'd like to be a part of the Yellowstone party, but 2016 is going to be a busy year.    So we will not know for sure for another month or two.  Regardless it's a fun group and you will enjoy the trip.  Yellowstone is beautiful.  Lots to see and if you're with a group that knows the area, you'll see more.  The wife and I were there last August and saw things I've never seen in four prior trips.

demag88, there are car rentals in West Yellowstone, Mt if you're staying there during your trip. Not sure how many there are, but any should be fine. Jackson, Wy. has some too, I know at the airport if you're coming in that way to Yellowstone. Good Luck!

Paul & Retta,

We will be staying over in Grizzly, but the actual rally will end Sunday, May 21. There are several car rental places in town, including the Yellowstone airport. It's probably not practical to use anyone outside of town because of the distance, unless you pick one up on the way in.

You are also hitting Memorial Day (May 30) and I would make any arrangements ASAP. It gets pretty nutty starting that weekend and that is one of the reasons I chose to start the rally earlier.

I'm sure all you veteran travelers to Yellowstone and the area are aware of Live Cams that you can view, but for those that haven't been there, go to Facebook and enter Live Cams. You will see a list come up and you can watch Cams in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. This way you can see the area and keep up with the weather or other things going on. My husband goes to these cams daily and enjoys doing that! Hope this has given someone some new info that will come in handy.

We love Yellowstone and the stops between here and there. We were there in early June 2013 on our way to Alaska. When we tried the NE exit, we ran into a huge snow storm that closed the pass we were planning to take. Otherwise, the weather was great. Having attended the Palo Duro Canyon rally last year and another one six years ago, we're interested in joining this one. But I have to schedule a driveway paving project for May this week before I can signup. Looks like it would be a lot of fun.

When we stayed at a park just outside the West exit, we couldn't get Verizon for our phones and the park's wi=fi was off. Is it any better now?

Yellowstone LiveCams.  One in the Visitor center that updates every 20 seconds or so, I randomly go outside and wave at it.  The other one is streaming and is counterclockwise around 90 degrees back.  Looks down the geyser basin.  This one can be remotely controlled by a group of geyser watchers.

The Park cell service has been upgraded over the last 2 summers.  Still not great, but Verizon is the best bet.

It's more than 10 years since we entered Yellowstone from the West.  At the time we weren't RVing and I didn't pay attention to the grades.  We will likely have our 99 Aerbus for the trip and I'd like to know if there are any routes to avoid.  If all goes according to plan we'll have our a Jeep which weighs about 1,000 lbs more than our HHR.  When we visited Yellowstone last year and entered via Cody, we never took the Aerbus through the park.  We had enough fun coming through the mountains just getting to Cody.  I'd appreciate any advise on routes from So California.  FWIW, when we drove through in 2006, we hit snow in June.  Nothing major, but for the wife, who was driving the F250, and grew up in So Cal, it was a bit unnerving.

I added another topic, YNP Trip Planning (http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,91625.0.html), for folks who need more specific information on the who, what, where, and why and so it will gather traffic for those who need routing information, stops enroute, etc.

This is a major undertaking for many folks and I would not want anyone to have a "campfire story" because we did not share enough information.  8)

Not to wreck anything for anyone at all, but visiting the Tetons is earmarked on the planning calendar as a suggestion for one of the many day trip options during the rally.

While a day does not necessarily do it justice, for those who don't have the extra space in their schedule, it will likely be an option for the rally week.

You would not want to be denied the attached views...  8)

We were in Yellowstone last week for a snow coach tour - very nice. We took a look at some of the FS and BLM campgrounds along the way and decided we would just find a nice spot along a river for a few days before heading home after the rally. Anyone else interested can take a look at the Allstays app (or your campsite finder of choice) to see the options. Some of the sites only take smaller trailers like ours, but there are spots for even the big rigs most of you seem to have. Lots of places along the Snake are good.

We will be joining all of you in May in our new 36'ft 5th wheel. We will be coming from Indiana.  The trip planner says it is 1670 miles from Indianapolis to Yellowstone.  Since we are newbies, I am hoping to get some help from those of you who are seasoned RVers. Here are some questions:
 1. How many hours/miles would be reasonable to calculate for travel each day?
 2. The planner has us taking hwy 90 across MN,SD, WY & MT. Is it easy to find 1 night stays along this route? Is the weather a concern for this time of the year?
3.Are there places we should not miss along the way? Planning on visiting the Badlands.
4.Once we get to Grizzly how do we know where to go?  Will we be assigned a site?
5.Can we request a pull through site?
 6. Is their an agenda or are we on our own after we arrive?
 7. What are some must have items we should bring?
Looking forward to making new friends.  Patty Gray

As you get closer to the Rally date, I'm sure Kim will be posting a lot of information about where the group will be situated, and what he has planned.  What is usual with this Forum's rallies, is that there is a loose agenda which will allow you to participate in some type of planned event, often a couple, or to do your own thing.  My advice is to go with the flow, join in to most events as the company is worth it.
As for how far, time or distance you should drive each day, is totally subjective and dependant on how much time you have.  If we have been through an area several times, then you won't want to sightsee.  however, travelling through new areas will offer so much to see and do.  We try to stay off the interstates where ever feasible to see more of the sights.  Ten hours of Interstate travel will net you 500 or more miles, so 3 days + to get there, and you're likely so pooped you won't enjoy the Rally.  Most of us try to limit our daily trips to between 200 to 300 miles or around 6 hours driving, so that we can enjoy the trip.
Regardless of your route, as you head west, you will be heading into higher elevations.  Once you hit the mountains, it is impossible to predict what the weather will bring.  Be prepared to lay over if you hit bad weather, it won't last long if it does come.  Plan you overnight stops with several options.  If you are not a Passport America member, look into it as we found they are well represented the further west you get, and 3 nights will pay for the membership.  Use the internet to locate campsites, or use Walmarts, Flying J's etc if you are so inclined.
    Have a great time.

Ed

Patty,

Those are a lot of questions! Others who come from that direction, or who have in the past, will provide you some routing information, but most of that will be based on how much time you have to make the trip. For some, time dictates daily distance, and you want to be able to stop and smell the roses.

There will be more information to follow, but generically, we (RV Forum folks) will be greeting and parking you, collecting your fees prior or at arrival, and a loose itinerary is being prepared, even as we speak.

This is a bit different than a lot of rallies, in that we have a block reservation. I have not received the exact block of sites yet because winter has a lot to do with which sites will be clear when we get there. So you will want to watch the FAQ page.

On arrival day, Sunday, May 15, we will be greeting and escorting folks as they come in, and there will be a group welcome and introduction event that afternoon at a time to be announced.

There will be plenty of information dispensed at that time to cover what has not been posted prior.

Our goal, especially for the new folks, is to create a schedule that allows you to pick and choose how to spend your time and not over structure things. It will give you plenty of options, some as a group, others individually, so that you maximize the time you have and balance that with everything that is important for you to see and do.

Yellowstone National Park is not mastered in a week, but hopefully we can provide you with a guide that will give you the most bang for the buck!

Stay tuned!

Kim

Patty, as Ed and Kim have said, any information we can provide will be more meaningful if we knew how long you will be traveling.  That said, I can tell you when we pulled our trailer, a 30 foot bumper pull, with our F250 diesel from California to Florida and then stopped in New York on the return trip which took us through Yellowstone, and some of the states you will be driving through.  We could do as many as 500 - 600 miles a day.  But if you drive that much every day, it will not only be tiring,  you're not going to see much.  And there's a lot to see between Indiana and Yellowstone.  We've traveled on the Interstates and secondary US highways.  We much prefer the secondary highways since, it's a more relaxed pace.  But if you're time is limited, then I-90 is probably the way to go.  Give us a bit more information and we can help you with things to see and do as well as places to stay.  Welcome to the party.

Yep...only you can determine how many hours per day you can and want to travel.

For us, Yellowstone is not quite 900 miles, but we're still planning on the trip taking 3 days...maybe 4. I KNOW I can make it in 2 days...but don't want to drive that hard.

For perspective, and since I still work during the week out of the coach, we will take three weekends, six stops total,  to travel the 1547 miles to YNP from Kerrville, TX, where we now are. Three 300 miles days, three 200 mile days is how it ends up working out.

But....that's stopping a week in Santa Fe and a week in Salt Lake City.

A trip planning trick I use is to take the total mileage, divide by 50mph, and that computes how many hours we will drive and it includes food stops and fuel. It's amazing how accurate it is for us. So if we need to make 300 miles that day, that is almost exactly six hours, point to point.

Then I use Google Maps and start blocking the number of days traveling with the miles, and whether we want to stretch or compress to hit a certain park or area. It's not rocket science but after you do it a couple of times, you'll get your travel rhythm and what works best. One size definitely does not fit all.

Like Boomer says, just because you can, doesn't mean you should - take your time and enjoy what you see!

We are coming from Oceanside, CA which is about 1000 miles from West Yellowstone. Stopping in Las Vegas for 1 night. Then on to Moab for 4 nights and then going on to Lake Jordanelle State Park in Park City for 2 nights. Then to West Yellowstone. We try to keep our driving to more than 5 hours a day.

As noted in the trip planning post, you should expect a wide range of temps in the middle of May, from freezing to the 70's (we've seen both ends), especially this year with the El Nino effect.

Prepare to layer during the day and carry what you need for your outings!

Ahh, the unpredictability of it all - part of the fun!

But it's Yellowstone. That kind of weather can happen year-round there.

We lived near Big Piney, WY for a while...my kids still laugh about setting off their 4th of July fireworks in 6 inches of fresh fallen snow...and it was still snowing.

We leave for our 2 month trip April 28th, meandering towards Yellowstone as our northern most point. The plan is to wing the entire trip, with our sole reservation the first night.

Chances are we will arrive at YNP sometime very close to the rally.

Is there a way we can pick up a space from a cancellation or a no show ?

Something for pet owners to consider is the fact that when you go into the park, your schedule is at the mercy of traffic, bison jams, and just plain mileage. It's almost 3 million acres, for crying out loud.

There are limitations to your pets being in the park. Read this YNP blurb (https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/pets.htm) carefully!!

Give some thought to the idea that we may have some volunteer dog walkers who can help and not tie your visits to three or fours hours of sightseeing and two more hours of driving to get back. It can make for long stressful days, and we should be able to come up with a plan to lessen the burden.

If you have some ideas or discussion on the topic, this is a good place and time to start.

Since there are no bears round these parts, we never would have thought our furry little darlings would high tail it back to the TT with a bear right behind. Now we are quite sure they would.

At the Welcome gathering, we will be passing on some safety information that many will not have considered in the last place they camped.

You have to consider that Yellowstone National Park is some 2.2 million acres in parts of three states that thousands of animals call home. We just paid a fee to cruise their neighborhood.  8)

We have 2 routes planned and depending on weather will decide which one. If weather permits we will take Hwy 90 across or if weather is a factor then we will take Hwy 80.  Are you taking 90 across?  I am so new at this not sure if we should make our one night stay reservations or just wing it.  planning on driving 400 miles or 6-8 hours a day.  How about you?

Hi Kim. It turns out that we have about a 50 - 50 chance of being able to make the rally. When is the latest we could reserve and still get in?  Or should we just take a chance on someone dropping out late. I'd hate to keep someone from attending by locking up a reservation and then dropping out (should kjow for sure by the first of May).

Thanks,

Ernie

We have about eight slots left, but we will be returning them probably two weeks from today, April 15.

That will give you some slack to decide.

Look forward to seeing you both!

So that we can plan our budget. Do you know when you will be asking us to pay for our Grizzly spots? I think Paypal is a good way but be sure to include Paypal's costs when you get to the final decision on the cost. I know you posted $310 for a pull through but Paypal will take some of that. Ok I'm done rambling.

Thanks

Patty, we haven't decided on a route to Yellowstone.  Most likely it will be 90 but it might be 94.  We've made a few reservations for a slower, more meandering journey home.  On the way home we plan to keep our drive time to 2 to 4 hours per day.  We plan on staying two nights at most of our stops with the exception of the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore area where we will stay four nights.  You and anyone else who might be interested are welcome to join us for all or part of our trip back to Minnesota.   Our itinerary is still a work in progress but I'd be happy to share it.

Patty, we haven't decided on a route to Yellowstone.  Most likely it will be 90 but it might be 94.

Not too much to see on 94, the Fort Lincoln in Mandan with Custer's house museum, Roosevelt National park and maybe the shows will be going on in Medora.  Awfully early for them I believe as I seem to recall they start about Memorial day.

In Glendive MT there is an interesting state park, Makoshika in the badlands there.  There is also a dinosaur museum.

In Miles City there is the range riders museum and the town still has many old buildings from frontier times although many burned down a few years ago - 20 years or so.

Forsyth is another old western town and makes an interesting drive through if interested in that sort of thing.

Billings is one if not the largest city in MT and has numerous museums and other attractions including pro baseball at the bottom level.  It is also home to the KOA chain of RV Parks.

Livingston has a good museum in the old depot which in itself is quite a building.  Main street was used in the movie, "A River Runs Through"  There are other museums in town that are quite interesting too.

Bozeman has the "Museum of the Rockies" with good dinosaur displays.  The current, retiring, director was the technical advisor to the Jurassic Park movies.

I can expand on this route as we have done it many times on our way to MN, old home town etc. and points east.

MN blue skys, while crossing MT, consider a stop in Philipsburg and the take  your toad and spend a day at the Garnet Ghost town side just 10 miles out of Phillipsburg. Well worth the stop. The Rt 1 loop through Philipsburg off of I90 doesn't add hardly any miles to the trip.

OOPS! forgot this is a little west of where you turn south off 90 to Yellowstone.

Wish we could come along and meet you guys. Yellowstine is such a great location.  We were there a few years ago and were in the Lamar Valley around 5:30 am to see the wolves, amazing! We went back the following evening at dusk just as the snow was starting to fall (June) and watched a lone wolf making its way back to its den. It swam across the river. It's a scene I will never forget. We saw lots of bears and a few grizzlies. If you have time also stop at the Tetons. The hermitage point trail is a fairly easy and very pleasant walk there - around 9 miles.  Hope you all have a wonderful trip!  8)

I'm taking my coach out of storage Thursday and putting new tires on it and then the bi-annual smog test.  Next is Spring cleaning and stocking with food and OGS for the summer.  I plan to head to the great white north around May 5th.

I went to collage in Bozeman and I go back up there every other year.  I love the park and all of the interesting aspects of it.  I used to do a lot of wildlife photography in the park in both the Spring and Fall.

Wondering if anyone plans to drive to West Y'stone from the "south"... Southern NM, West Tx, ... which route are you favoring?  One that Google Maps suggested goes up thru Denver, Casper, then across Wy, then swing west of YNP...  Another suggested a swing west thru Moab, SLC and up.. Another one goes thru Buena Vista to I-70, then west for a while and north again on some "secondary" highways...  The weather in Colorado might be a large factor especially for the high elevation routes...

thx.

We have friends (Gunny69) behind us coming up the Front Range from Amarillo and another probably doing the same thing from San Antonio.

Since we are all a week early, we hope to catch the good wave. Next week, who knows?

Wondering if anyone plans to drive to West Y'stone from the "south"... Southern NM, West Tx, ... which route are you favoring?  One that Google Maps suggested goes up thru Denver, Casper, then across Wy, then swing west of YNP...  Another suggested a swing west thru Moab, SLC and up.. Another one goes thru Buena Vista to I-70, then west for a while and north again on some "secondary" highways...  The weather in Colorado might be a large factor especially for the high elevation routes...

thx.

Gary, I just looked at the attendees list and noticed you and Colleen will be attending the Yellowstone rally.  Awesome.  Looking forward to seeing you guys again.  It's been a long time since the Big Bend rally. ;D

As is par for the course when a rally gets in motion months ahead of time, there will be some attrition over time for all kinds of reasons by the prospective rally goers. This rally is no exception.

We have lost a few, gained a few, and are sending out good vibes for all who have ended up on the fence with last minute go/no go decisions.

We'll be in early with several others this Sunday and we hope everyone else is close to being loaded and wish them great traveling weather.

Looking forward to seeing everyone, and for those with some medical and/or mechanical issues slowing them down, hope those work out quickly!

I like that KOA. Urban, a little crowded, but right on the Trax (light rail) line to downtown. We get our propane refilled there occasionally too. Check out the Red Iguana Mexican restaurant a few blocks east, but be prepared for a long wait if you don't get there early.

For Ogden stops, Wasatch View Estates is a Passport Park, $20 a night, it is a mobile home park, not the best of places, but near shopping etc.  Just little further north there is Willard Bay SP, might be buggy as heck.  $25 a night, at Flying J exit.

Has everything you need for a $20 overnight (Passport America) in an otherwise expensive city - 50 amp FHU, great view, a mile off the interstate, nice managers, convenient access to everything Ogden and Salt Lake City!

We've spent a lot more for a lot less... 8)

So...looking at Accuweather for the rally dates, we're probably going to have a few nights below freezing. NOT at all uncommon in that part of the world...so, should I pick up a heat tape for my water supply hose?

I was hoping to find one in the clearance sections of Lowes or Home Depot...but no such luck.

Typically what I do for a freezing night is to unhook the water hose overnight, running on the internal tank, until it warms up the next day. Much simpler.

This is what we do, quite often here actually.  For a weekend or 4-ish day trip I will many times fill up at home and never even connect to the campgrounds water.  Longer trips, just hook up, fill the tank, disconnect as needed.  I don't like to worry about it so if there is at all a chance of sub-30 or so degree temps I just do the above so I don't even have to be concerned with freezing something.

To set some expectations, "Happy Hour" is going to be difficult to do at Yellowstone for several reasons.

In most cases, setting a time for Happy Hour which most set at around 4pm, is too early here. People who have traveled a thousand miles are not going to want to be restricted to a time to be back, traffic and long distance to travel across the park being the key here.

We are never back from the park before 7pm simply because the later afternoon hours are better for reduced tourist traffic and the wildlife are far more active late in the day.

If someone wants to "own" a Happy Hour and preparing food, they can do so, but our past experience in places like this is that Happy Hour is poorly attended and most folks will have some difficulty juggling preparing food and returning on time. We've seen people grumble because they feel forced to cook every night for everyone and they don't feel comfortable not bringing something so we lose their participation in the conversation.

We were considering, instead, two different things, one a morning coffee session and sendoff, and possible a second "debriefing" at about 7pm in the pavilion for those who wish to participate and share their day's adventure. Certainly, bringing your dinner over "picnic" style is an option, but the happy hour/potluck thing has to be very voluntary.

You will quickly find that Yellowstone time does is not measured conventionally. So we are very purposefully not setting schedules to a clock and over planning folks' time. If you are pooped from "having" to do stuff, the rally will lose its value.

The goal here is to integrate new folks into the group, introduce those who are new to the park to all things Yellowstone, and exchange thoughts and ideas informally. So this rally is far more free form than most people will be used to. Yellowstone is hard to even begin to scratch in a week; we have been here twice before, for two months each time, and still have things to do. We want folks to have their appetite, whatever it might be, photography, hiking, fishing, sight seeing or just being with like minded folks satisfied.

But as far as "expecting" folks to bring something to a happy hour, there are no expectations. If one or more happens, it will be the right thing at the right time.  8)

Sadly we are not going to  make the Yellowstone rally but I would like to share our  experience at the  recent Big Bend Rally.  The rally host set the tone the  first night with the  note that  no goodies were planned  for the first night  happy hour. AND at each subsequent Happy Hour no  goodies were shared.  We brought beverages of  choice and socialized.  Believe me no one ever went  hungry and  our appetites were not spoiled for  dinner.  Most of us do not need the extra calories. Just my 2 cents and I'm sticking to it.

With such a  large  Park as Yellowstone having to  "return" by a set  time in the  afternoon could indeed be a hinderance of the fun.  Have fun with out me!   Sigh............

Kim, the morning coffee get-together and evening gathering sounds great.

I agree traveling through the he park and trying to get back to a certain time will be difficult let alone if a bison jam or animal sighting is present, which will almost make it impossible to return in a timely fashion.

I also agree with Betty, at Big Bend even after the traditional happy hour everyone had some time to grab a bite of dinner and relax before gathering around someone's coach for a BS session.  No one went to bed hungry and for the most part everyone was relaxed.  No need to stress everyone out by trying to return at a certain time.

Ok, here's a perfect example - Day 1 (today) when we arrived in Grizzly.

We are checked in, in the site, the car is loaded with food, cameras, and water, and at 4:30pm we hit the west gate.

A STEADY stream of people coming out, just a couple of us going in. (Timing is everything.)

We're not ten miles into the park and spot a bear, create a bear jam, and that's in the first half hour.

Moving right along, about another ten miles down the road, after geysers, we get a monster bear jam, a big grizzly less than a 100 yards off the road, sleeping between some trees by the river, the Ranger going nuts keeping people out of the road, and trying to keep people with cameras (like us, in line). Twenty minutes of sleeping grizzly pics, and off we go and see the first red dog (baby bison) of the season (now with him/her there are mommas as big as houses looking ready to deliver), creating a new bison jam.

Bison to the left, bison to the right...then the elk show up. Now we have an elk jam.

Pretty sure we got within two miles of Old Faithful but turned around just in time to see a guy pass on a double yellow line right in front of the Ranger. (Note: 45 mph almost everywhere in the park - don't mess with the Rangers!) Traffic stop/blue lights "what's happening?" jam.

We are back in the house finally at 8:30 with plenty of light. Sixty miles in four hours.

THAT'S how you roll in Yellowstone.  8)

Too much "gotta go here by such a time, gotta go there by such a time, gotta be way over yonder at such a time...can really ruin things for people...most of us have had plenty of that kind of  madhouse scheduling in our working lives... We've made it to Carson City NV and after spending a very cold night near Walker NV, we're happy to be a bit lower in elevation.  Our furnace decided to take a break late yesterday afternoon.  We were at 6500 ft and the outside temps were in the high 30's to low 40's.  Had to turn the genny on and with the help of two space heaters were able to keep fairly warm until 10 PM.  Woke up to a chilling 43 and turned on the genny immediately.  Boiled a pot of water hoping that might warm us a bit.  Made that all important pot of java and turned on one space heater.  After 1 hour it was almost 53 in the motorhome.  After another hour with the help of a second space heater we got it up to almost 60.  So, today we scour the Net for a place that works on RV furnaces.  Then we need to have the brakes looked at.  Before we got under way this morning, we couldn't find our new kitten.  Goldie, just 5 months old was no place to be found.  Our worst nightmare was happening.  We're sure we didn't leave the door open but we looked in every nook and cranny.  No Goldie.  We went outside and looked for a 15 minutes.  We were camped along side the Walker River and I was ready to jump in in need be.  As I was getting ready to walk down to the wet shores of the river I heard Maria call.  I walked toward her and heard her say she found Goldie.  She was hiding beneath storage area beneath the stove and couldn't get out.  Her cry is so soft that if she was letting us know where she was, we simply couldn't hear her.   In any event, she was happy to come out and stayed under cover on the sofa the rest of the trip.

So, we're probably good to go it it's in the low 30's at Grizzly.  But hopefully we'll have the benefit of the furnace and won't have to rely on the small space heaters.  We're probably only 750 miles from Grizzly and still expect to arrive mid-day Sunday the 15th.   Barring any other minor glitches, we hope to see you all in a week.  Happy Mothers Day to you moms and safe travels to all.

Gary and Maria

Read a file created by Gary RV Roamer regarding furnace problems.  It looks like the furnace got too hot yesterday and shut down.  In any event, it's working fine for now.  We'll stick have it checked out just in case.

Just finished dinner at Ole Ole, Mexican Restaurant at the Gold Dust Casino in Carson.  Great food, great casino and Maria did her thing.  Dinner $54, RV Park $32.  Maria's winnings $146.  All in all, not a bad day.

No need to worry.  Even in the summer months afternoon/evening thunderstorms are very common.  This time of year a little snow is expected but it usually doesn't hang around long.

When we were there last September even the morning we were leaving we had about an inch @ Grizzly and by the time we had breakfast and were ready to break camp it was melted.

Nope. The forecasts have been wrong every day we have been here. Yellowstone creates its own weather because of the thermal features.

You will probably seen one of everything before you leave here, but none of it should be a travel concern. While the nights are cool, the days are warming up fine. It was 67 here yesterday and I saw snow spits up in the Gallatin River valley this morning. It's just whatever.  8)

We purchased our National Park year long pass today when visiting Rocky Mountain NP. Considering all the NP's we will be visiting in the next few months, its a bargain.

The slide out broke yesterday when we pulled into Estes Park. We muscled it open when the motor on one side decided to take a vacation of its own. After watching a few YouTube videos I think I can pull the Lippert motor myself and see if its the motor or the wiring. The wind, morning snow and ice, and the short window for tolerable temperatures is slowing down the repair.

We really hope its not the wiring and a motor swap out will cure the problem.

Kim,

You certainly have the right idea for a visit to Yellowstone. You are also correct in stating "don't mess with the Rangers". The season is already starting to get busy and they are going to be taxed to the limit with the possible 5-6 million visitors this year. Last year we had over 4 million visitors and I know all of us were very tired at the end of the season!! I had a customer about 3 years ago that was given a citation for feeding a Raven. Many folks like to do this to entice them to come closer for a photo op. That error cost him $135!

The animals are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. They may appear almost anywhere so one cannot project a "good" viewing location. Be sure to obey all the rules. Last year there were five Bison gorings in the first three months of the summer season. Two of them were at Old Faithful. The animals have no boundaries and are free to roam wherever they choose. Bison can seem very tame and docile but they are not! They can run much faster than any human and do not like their space encroached by any person or animal. Males can weigh up to 2000 lbs and females up to 1000 lbs.

Check with the Interpretation Rangers at the various visitor centers to find out what might be going on in the park. They are there to provide visitors with information on all aspects of Yellowstone. The Northern Range has a variety of wildlife that show up quite often. The Old Faithful area is loaded with thermal features that are amazing. The Hayden and Lamar valleys are awesome and worth the visit. Also, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is not to be missed!

It has been a long time since I have visited the forum on a regular basis. Life has taken me in other directions but I try to stay in touch. We are looking forward to meeting members we have not seen before. I hope everyone thoroughly enjoys their time in Yellowstone and Bill and I will try to help as much as possible.

Looks like Yellowstone will be greeting us with a wave of cold weather.  For those of you not familiar with snow and ice conditions take your time.  A few inches of snow should not be a problem.  However, ice and especially black ice can be extremely hazardous.  Black ice is just ice that you can't see.  Kinda looks like a shiny blacktop road.  It can appear on bridges when the road is otherwise ice free.  Mind your speed and do not tailgate.  Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir, but I'm a native of Minnesota and have seen some challenging road conditions during my first 20 years behind the wheel of a car.  On a positive note, for those of you into ice fishing...    ;D

Great news !

After spending several hours on the phone searing for a repair shop or parts, we decided to skip the 2 week wait and attempt to repair the slide out ourselves. The Youtube videos from Lippert were invaluable. Turns out that Camping World never installed the set screw on one of the motors when they "repaired" the slide out. While driving, we hit a surprise bump in the road, which must have been just enough to push the motor up, disengaging it from the drive gear. When we went to operate the slide, the motor spun in place and tore two of the wire solder joints. A trip to the Estes Park Ace Hardware for a soldering gun worked like a charm.

We remain on schedule.  ;D

We had the first kill of the season last night. After a restless sleep disturbed night, I was up at 0445 setting mouse traps in the storage bays. Between Heidi whining and Diane trying to calm her down, nobody got much sleep.  So at O dark thirty I was  outside  in my bathrobe setting traps. Checked them this morning, and there is  one less wildlife specimen in Yellowstone.  Service's will be announced later........

Our "normal" 7pm "debriefing" is moved up to 6pm, tonight only!

We will still conduct our daily reports while we are sampling!

Last night, we had an excellent response to the "Forum in Person" conversations on Internet usage on the road, tire pressure monitoring sensors, how to load pictures to the Forum pages, and several other sidebars.

If you have questions or comments, we have another session tonight, moderated by SargeW (Marty), Jeff Cousins, and myself. You never know, but the question you ask may be on the tip of the tongue of others! Tonight we may try to steer toward "bucket list" destinations, so please join us.

Tonight - Wed, May 18

1800 - (6pm) - Road Chef's Sampler - bring your own plates and utensils and beverage of choice. Remember, this is NOT a potluck, per se, but a sample/tasting of our  chef's who have a favorite dish for you to try. You do NOT have to bring a dish of your own!! Think finger food!

Kim

p.s. Last but not least, Mike, Chrystal, and Jared Zuech will finally be here bringing up the rear of the Framily attendees!

As Framily adventures are wont to do, the Road Chef Sampler morphed into a full on food festival!

The original intention was for those folks who really wanted to cook to prepare a sample of one of one of their favorites and share recipes. The original call to arms a couple nights ago had three hands go up. When everything was said and done, at least 13 chefs presented.

Some really fine work by all who made the effort and folks really admired the work, considering the empty plates and pots at the end. Great fellowship and the warmest evening (60 degrees) made for a great event.

Bill Nash (Billandpam) truly embodied the "sampler concept" on his pass through the line and received the "Best Presentation by a Starving Camper" award.

Good times!

Weather has not been our friend this week in Yellowstone, but it did not appear to dampen enthusiasm at the group dinner at Bullwinkle's in West Yellowstone.

Eric Straughn, Max (MN Blue Skies)'s better half, celebrated a birthday with everyone singing Happy Birthday, and we thought food service was excellent for such a large group. It was apparent they were used to large groups!

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves!

I have to apologize for the continued yukky weather...

Kim, no apology necessary.  It's really a matter of perspective.  For example, if you were stranded at sea in the midst of a major storm, you'd consider this weather almost pleasant.  Then again, if you were baking in Death Valley with high winds and 130, you'd be remembering how nice it was in West Yellowstone.  So the old saying really applies.,  When life gives you lemons, you have a cup of hot chocolate.

Despite the temps and rain, we've had a great time, made some new friends and will remember to pack a better umbrella next time.  Thanks to you and your team for all your hard work and the camaraderie of a great group of forumites.

Hear, Hear!

Fortunately, they don't close the park or put the animals away so they don't shrink when they get wet...and being forest land, this country NEEDS all the rain it can get.

I wouldn't worry about the weather Kim. This is just typical Yellowstone NP weather. It hasn't kept us from doing anything or even slowing us down. Personally I think it is perfect. We have been here mid-summer with 90+ degrees and I would MUCH rather have 50's/60's for hiking than 90's.   Evenings are nice and cool just the way we like it.

Somehow, a conversation with Jim Dick the other day about the other geysers besides Old Faithful, morphed into a planned walk around the Old Faithful area boardwalk to see those geysers, which morphed into "let's have breakfast before we do that" plan, which morphed into "we want to do that, too!", and we have a photo op when we discover the original perpetrator, Jim Dick (the actual photographer here) with wife, Pat, eating right across from us!

Dave (Gunny69) and Nancy Moser , Marc (mfish4299) and Jimmie Kay Fisher , Joe and Patty Gray (pgray52246), Dee Falchini, Mike Zuech (zmotorsports), Kim Bertram (skyking4ar2), Chrystal Zuech, Jared Zuech, Christi Bertram (gypsyfeet), and Steve Falchini (Steve N Dee)...

Lots of Framily!

Margi, It has become one nightmare with all the visitors we have at YNP now! It doesn't take long for the park to close parking areas so the animals can have a little peace and quiet Consequently, we do not see many of the sitings as we are usually working. We did see a Grizzly Sow and two cubs on our way to a YA meeting on Wednesday but I was driving so missed any photo ops. On Thursday we spotted a lone Griz on our way back from an NPS seminar but my camera was not set properly so I missed getting any shots. This year is going to be a huge challenge for all parks to accommodate visitors who want to see everything possible in the shortest amount of time. It will tax all who work here to the limit!

Had a busy day yesterday.  Almost 11 hours in the park.  Saw nine bears.  Three moms each with two cubs.  They ranged in size from quite large to very small.  The smallest couldn't have been more than a few months old.  They looked to be about the size of our large cat.  Maybe 15 lbs.  They crossed the highway behind their mom jumping and running as only young ones will do.  Two others were in a tree as their mom was gathering dinner in the field below.  We drove through Fire Hole and almost every other attraction up to the junction a few miles past Tower Falls where the road takes a right turn and heads to Cooke City and beyond.  Saw that yesterday so no need to do it again.  Dun Raven Pass was closed so a bit disappointed that we didn't get to the 10,000 foot level.  ;)  Maria finally got to see Old Faithful.  Didn't get back until 9:PM and caught a few Mule Deer or similar up close and personal.  It was getting pretty dark and they weren't bothered by our presence.  That concludes our parks rides.  We probably added more than 600 miles to the Jeep.  Nice to be able to pull off the road with a steep shoulder and just keep going after seeing the sites.  By the way, I thought I heard the park is 2.2 Million acres.  FWIW, that's 3,437.5 square miles.  At least if a square mile is still 640 acres.  So me thinks there's a lot more park to see.  Another time with a bit warmer temps.  On the other hand, warmer weather means more people, a lot more people.  So maybe??  Don't really mind the rain since it seems to bring out the animals.  All in all a great week.  Many thanks to Kim and team for all their work.

It's always bittersweet to close out a rally, especially with such a fun and excited group. Every night, we got louder and louder and that's an indicator to me that folks were having a good time!

To reiterate a point made by Jeff, I hope our rally Framily will take a moment to consider using the DONATE button at the top of the page, and drop a few bucks in the kitty to support Tom and his mission of keeping us all online and informed. It is often a thankless task, Tom takes it seriously, and because of his efforts we can remain "the friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing".

Special thanks to SargeW for letting me bounce some ideas off him and his amazing whistle!

I would very much appreciate any critiques or observations you would want to share privately via the email button or even on this post so that the next rally, wherever it may be, can benefit!

Safe travels to all who are moving out tomorrow! It was very much our pleasure to host this rally and we hope to see you out on the road!

You did an amazing job Kim. It's hard to know when pulling a rally together to know just how much "organization" you need to put into the day to day events. Yellowstone has so much to offer, most folks were busy almost every day. You struck a good balance between events, and free to wander time.

Congratulations to you and Christi for pulling this off so smoothly!

We'll be here two more weeks and we will be in and out of the store (we keep fogetting to stamp our book!) - hopefully we can coordinate another meal with you and Pat at the park.

It meant a lot for you both to make the effort to come all the way in, so thanks!

As is so often the case in the high country, the weather today was wild. It was spitting snow as we left the RV park..a mile down Hwy 20, it was snowing like mad...just south of Island Park, ID, the snow turned to hail...about an inch on the highway, and we came across a serious overturn wreck in the bar ditch. (Several other cars were there helping, and it appeared that everyone got out OK...shaken, but otherwise, alive.
Saw a bit of every kind of weather...rain, snow, hail, and bright sunshine.

We saw the same weather all they way through Island Park and by the time we hit Ashton it was pretty much rain by then.  We must have been just ahead of you because we didn't see any accidents but I know we were hooking up to leave about the same time.  Lots of idiot drivers though, surprised we didn't see more accidents.

Glad you made it safely.

Hello guys. After leaving the rally we stayed 2 nights in Cody. Then headed back through Yellowstone to Tetons. In the middle of climbing what seems like the biggest mountain, the Turbo charger blew. We made it through Yellowstone (10 mph on inclines) to our destination in Colter Bay. To all those who had to follow us "sorry".  Truck is being towed to Afton Wy for service. We have a rental car and enjoying Tetons. FYI, truck was under warranty thank goodness for that! Hope to see all of you again soon. Patty

We too had an eventful departure from Yellowstone.  We only made it as far as Island Park before the check engine light came on.  Spewing black smoke from the exhaust and off and on loss of power, we limped our way to Rexberg, Idaho before the stop engine light came on.  At that point we stopped and called Good Sam emergency Roadside Assistance.  They arranged for a flatbed tow to Idaho Falls for the nearest Cummins repair center. FWIW, they were very responsive and they did a great job with the tow.  Spent the night parked in front of the repair shop.  The next day, the diagnosis was a small motor assembly that controls the EGR exhaust valve had burned out.  Mind you this is Friday of a holiday weekend.  The closest the part could be found was Salt Lake City and the soonest it could be there was Tuesday.  At that point, we packed up the toad with 2 dogs, some clothes and some food to head for home (near Los Angeles).  We figured we would drive until we got tired, they try to find a place to stay that would accept dogs and would have availability on Memorial Day weekend.  Well, we kept driving and driving and before you know it, we decided to come all they way home.  899 miles and 14 hours later, we arrived safe and sound at home.  The longest I have ever driven in one stretch, but of course, faster and easier than driving the MH.  Now on Friday, we get to fly to Salt Lake City (the closest airport), rent a car, drive 3 hours to Idaho Falls, drop off the rental car, pick up the motorhome and make the same 899 mile drive home.  Although, believe me, we won't do it in 1 day.  For the icing on the cake, our extended service contract doesn't cover emissions equipment, which this is.  So, the 900.00 repair will all be out of pocket, bu since our deductible is $ 500.00 it's really only an extra $ 400.00.  We are one of the few that are still ahead (or at least even) on our service contract.  But the 10 days in Yellowstone made it all worthwhile.  One of the best places we've ever visited.  Special thanks to Kim & Christi for organizing and showing us around.  Forum framily is the best!

Steve & Dee

The "Yellowstone or Bust" has seen some emphasis on the "bust" part, but you seem to be taking everything in stride. RV'ing is a lot of things, but predictable? Maybe not..  :'(

Glad you had a great time and hope everyone hits their mark and you are back on the road as expected.  8)

Made it back to Taos OK.  2.5 days roughly.  three years ago we got some Toyo tires from a small tire store in La Jara, just south of Alamosa.  From day 1, I thought that the front driver's tire was probably a little out of balance... not enough to get too concerned but a bother, primarily on really smooth roads.  So, as luck might have it sometimes it works out... he was open and had some time on Tuesday so we stopped and had the tires checked.  They rotated some and checked the balance and sure nuff the Driver's side front was off, about 4 oz.  Now it rides on the rear and the old rear rides on the front and everything has become noticeably smoother.  Even the sun came out.

Thanks once more to the Bertrams for pulling this together and being so gracious.

And for those who may have wondered about why we had the rally when we did, these are pictures of the traffic on Sat, May 28, at 1130.

The line backed west out US 20 PAST Electric St which is where many of you coming up US 20 from Rexburg turned off for Grizzly. This went on for a while!

Might be worth a conversation or two?  In contrast to many RVF rallies, where there are NP's or other major facilities/features, this area, while very interesting to visit, strikes me as more of an individualistic venue instead of a group venue.  Some groups do come, usually united by an interest in geology, history, healing/medicine, arts, old cars or some other speciality while others come and enjoy the food, outdoor recreation, galleries, museums, weather or whatever.  There's little that compares to the "concentrated" Yellowstone experience for example or to the off-road/NP mecca surrounding Moab.  There are NP's in NM... Bandelier, Carlsbad, Bosque del Apache Bird Refuge, WhiteSands, Volcanos, Historical Sites (Chaco and the Pueblos), Santa Fe/Taos as old Spanish settlements from the 1600's and plenty of outdoor space but it tends to be really spread out and relatively small.  There are numerous casinos, golf courses and a growing performing arts scene though.  It's not trivial to get here either!  Also, there are no large RV parks even remotely similar to those around Moab, YNP, Zion, Grand Canyon or many places in Arizona.  The FMCA holds a large event at the Farmington Fairgrounds though and ABQ hosts the fall Hot Air Balloon Rally so there are a few big places.   The main RV repair shops are in ABQ, 140 miles away.  Red River has some large parks but I've never been to see them. They are hosting 30,000 Harleys this weekend! Plus I guess you could do a Quartzite type dry camp rally somewhere?

I'm no fan of surveys but maybe we need a way to gage the interest level... or not?  There's no point in putting a lot of work into this if only a few folks are interested...  they could come individually or in small groups if interested.
