Title: Big Bend National Park,Texas Rally - April 17-24
Post by: bajarat on September 03, 2015, 04:40:18 PM
Hello All !

Big Larry, Henry, and I are inviting 'Ya'll' to come to Texas for what promises to be one heck of a Rally that will have something for everyone!

Date: April 17-24, 2016

Location: Click here (http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/images/bibe-tx-map.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/directions.htm&h=235&w=237&tbnid=RpL-mk4oJ4XQpM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=91&usg=__Ijc3N0N2JmNiGjq6R6juxdNFeug=&docid=5c0tJg5ekQ5WuM&sa=X&ved=0CC8Q9QEwAWoVChMIj86dq-fbxwIVircUCh2GzQM7).

Rally HQ will be The Maverick RV Ranch at the Lajitas Resort.  www.lajitasgolfresort.com (http://www.lajitasgolfresort.com)
Lajitas Resort was billed as the Ultimate Hideaway for the rich and famous wanting to literally 'get away from everything'.  If there are any pilots wanting to join the rally, the Lajitas Airport can handle any bird you care to fly there.  Lajitas has two fine restaurants on the property to dine at as well as spa services for those who want to enjoy a day of pampering.  There are also fantastic hotel accommodations for those who are not still RV'ing, so you can join the rally and get in on all the activities we have planned.  Please take a moment to review the Lajitas Resort link to see other services and activities they offer.  If we have any golfers, the Lajitas course is one of the most unusual courses you will ever play and a strong slice for you right handers will sail your ball across the Rio Grande into Mexico!  I have secured 30 sites at $30 and $32 with cable TV for our group.

Lajitas is located between Big Bend State Park and Big Bend National Park.
http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/big-bend-ranch (http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/big-bend-ranch)
http://www.nps.gov/bibe/index.htm (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/index.htm)   800,000 acres

There are approximately over 200 miles of hiking trails in both parks offering diverse long distance views and an amazing variety of wildlife. Organized hikes will be offered in the national park for all who wish to attend. There are also white water raft trips down the Rio Grande for folks that wish to experience a thrilling adventure.

What activities are we planning? (This list is not complete as of now)

Jeep Runs to:

The Top of The World
Old Ore Road (26 mi one way)
River Road North and South (along the Rio Grande, 51 mi one way)
Marathon Road (think deep sand, Baja Style, over 20 mi)
Glenn Springs Road (16 mi)
Black Gap Road (8.5 mi)
Mariscal Mine - An old Cinnabar mine where mercury/quicksilver was mined
Hot Springs in the national park that is actually in the Rio Grande River

Big Bend Ranch State Park road to the ranch HQ is a fun, rocky 24 miles that once at the ranch HQ, has numerous Jeep trails to scenic sites that can be explored and is accessed a few miles from Maverick Ranch Rally HQ.

More roads and trails will be offered as we develop more of an organized schedule closer to the rally date.

Several years ago I owned a ranch near Lajitas and I have arranged a day for us to get some lead flying at a friend's ranch 2 miles north of the Lajitas Airport.  We will enjoy busting clay birds out over a 100 foot deep canyon, pistol and rifle targets, and for you long range gunners, we can set targets out to 750 yards to shoot from the rifle bench.  I will bring along a couple AR15's, AK-47, shotguns, and several caliber pistols for those few of you that won't have your firearms handy for the rally.  As for the rest of you, start gathering up your ammo now!

Another fun thing for us to do is cross into Mexico at the newly opened border crossing at Boquillias Canyon located in the national park.  It is unusual in that is it a US Border Kiosk($1mm) that is manned by park rangers, not Customs/Border Patrol Agents.  You simply park in the secure lot at the crossing, walk though the Border Kiosk down to the Rio Grande.  On the other side of the Rio Grande in Mexico, several old timers will serenade us while flat bottom boats will be rowed across the river to transport us the the other side.  The town of Boquillias del Carmen which has once again come to life since the border opening is 3/4 mi from the river.  You can chose a burro, horse, or truck to make your way into the village for a cold beverage and lunch and perhaps make a small purchase to support the villagers.  Upon your return to the US, you will place your passport into the kiosk machine and be connected to a Border Patrol Agent in Presidio, Texas.  A polite welcome home from the agent completes your experience of this very memorable few hours spent in Mexico.

And finally, a trip to Big Bend is not complete without a visit to Terlingua Ghost Town (7 mi from Lajitas).  The Ghost Town is located between our Rally HQ and the entrance to Big Bend National Park.  In fact, the Starlight Theater Restaurant is where I met my wife Andrea who was on holiday from Germany 9 years ago. Please take a moment to explore Terlingua at this link. http://ghosttowntexas.com/terlingua.html (http://ghosttowntexas.com/terlingua.html)  There are several unique restaurants in the area that you will also want to experience as well.

Come and enjoy one of the most remote and beautiful areas you have ever travelled to.  Many travelers have found Big Bend to be the destination that they return to year after year; Henry, Margaret, Andrea, and I are among the faithful!  There will also be some special prize$ for events held during the rally  ;)

Please reply to this thread to join us and secure a spot at Maverick Ranch RV Park !

Margaret and I will be present for sure. We were here last April and the bluebonnets were everywhere. As far as internet we had good wifi through our hot spot with AT&T. This is one of my favorite National park areas. Lots to do and no one will be bored. See you there.

No problem, Henry.  We just got back from a 4 month trip that started at Palo Duro Canyon last May.  You might recall us from there :)

That is one hell of a long way down there but we are thinking about it.

This will take some talking to get the better half to agree. ;)

One question based off of this past year's rally.  What is the tornado situation like? :D  The weather scenario in Palo Duro really messed up my sleeping and I need my beauty sleep.

True, but most of you are retired.  We were just sitting here talking about it and we may not be able to come for the entire week because it will probably take three days traveling each way.

We would sure love to see you and Chrystal there!

We also hope to make Big Bend this year after missing Palo Duro. Mike, why don't you guys just take the whole month of April off, and we'll go from Big Bend to Elephant Butte,NM for the FMCA Jeep Rally. Now that would be a nice vacation for you guys still working.

We're trying Gary.  I mapquested it last night and it showed 1306 miles equating to 21+ hours.

When we went to PDC this past May we did just over 1k miles in two days but I was ready to get out of the driver's seat after a 600 mile day and just overf 11 hours of driving.  I think it would be a three day drive each way.  Chrystal and I talked about it last night and she has to see when some meetings for her job are scheduled and make sure they don't overlap and then we may have to show up a day or two late or leave a day or two earyl in order to make the rally, but we're trying.

Mike.

We would love to do an extended trip Gary, however, with my job I am not allowed to take that much time off in one stint.  Also, I would hate to burn up all my vacation for the year in one trip.  I need those week long trips every other month and some extended weekend ones in there to keep my sanity.  At least until we are able to retire.

This "work" thing is really getting in the way of us seeing all of our rvforum friends. :(  But then again, if we weren't working it would be a money thing getting in the way. ;D

Unfortunately, the timing doesn't work for us.  With my work not being over until April 15th, no way I could drive there from CA in 2 days, especially being wiped out from work.  We have committed to go the West Yellowstone rally that Kim is organizing for May.  we hope to see many of our forum friends there.  Perhaps many of the Big Bend attendees can make it to Yellowstone by mid-may?  That would be a win-win!  Hope your rally is a huge success.  We love forum rallies!

It certainly has more room -- it'll even handle rifle cases laying flat if I lower the smaller (left) part of the split rear seat. But it also handles better, rides better and is a lot quieter than our old one. There may be a slight cost in handling certain dips and such, but it's well worth it for all the other improvements. Unlike in the old one, we now leave the rear seat up, rather than folded, most of the time, and still have a little more storage than before.

Love it.

We have put this on our agenda for 2016. ;D

We are currently near Yosemite, enjoying the smoke from the fires, will probably have to skip Kings Canyon due to brush fires. :'(
Nearly time to return to Australia! :(

How long do have a hold on the RV sites?

Paul:   I understand we have 30 sites for our group, and it appears 14 are now reserved.
If you watch the list I suspect you can make a reservation later easy enough.  I think there
are about 60 or so sites at the park, so I expect there will be plenty of room for late arrivals....

Hope you guys can make it.

Gary, I tried about four or five times and they never answered the telephone.  I finally left a message and they called back about an hour later.  As Ned said, the deposit is for the first night  @ $30.00.  Their cancellation policy, as per what was on our confirmation, is three days prior to arrival to get a full refund.

Hope you guys are able to make it, sounds like fun.

We would have had to leave on Saturday anyways to get back.  I didn't realize it was thru the 23rd until I made the reservations.  That at least made the wife happy that we weren't going to miss any of the actual rally.  She was a bit sad when I told her we would have to leave on Saturday in order to get back home.

Jerry I don't think you are going to find a national forest in the State Park there. The park headquarters for the State Park is over 20 miles off the main highway. The road is all rock and desert. The wife and I drove it last April in our Jeep.
Larry Dodd will have his Harley with him and there is some great roads to ride in Big Bend. The road going into the basin is very wooded.

Henry Big Bend  has more 800,000 acres of mt and cliffs your saying all the roads are dirt? Every national forest I have been to has some of the best roads for scenic riding. Big Bend stat park  is 300,000  acres of desert wildness . I hope Lajitas RV park has  paved roads to it. It looks like  Lajitas centrally located. I don't have a jeep only 2 small ATV. That is  good Larry is bringing  his Harley . I remember him from Quartzsite  this year we had bike trouble kinda of messed  Quartzsite up for Debra an I.

We are on the fence about bringing the bike.  When I talked to Maverick RV Park they said they had plenty of room for our trailer, but with the Jeep trails I don't know if there will be time for bike riding.  Wife and I are still contemplating and will more than likely change our minds several times before we depart for the rally.

Very happy to see everyone that is coming out to Big Bend !  Of the many things to look forward to is you will see more stars and man-made space objects(orbital debris) streaking across the sky than you have ever seen before.  Maverick Ranch RV Park has a strict no light pollution policy to allow for all to enjoy this.

In making reservations, you can also ask to be connected to Maverick Ranch and speak with the park manager Tony.  She will honor the rally rate for early arrivals and later departures.

For those who don't follow Gary Phillips on Facebook here is a GREAT aerial survey of Big Bend NP.
I watched it on big screen and it's awesome.  Additionally turn up the speakers for some good western
music.  We will try to have a good sound system in Big Bend so we can enjoy some Texas Swing. . ..

Yes JerryG&Deb, we now have the HD permanently attached to the rear of the RV.  Looking forward
to doing some riding in Big Bend.  There are some great roads there.  If you have a bike, bring it and
let's plan on at least one good day of biking in Big Bend. . .

We Welcome a new person to our group.  We (Henry & Margaret and Loretta & I) met Paul DeMarias on Nova Scotia
this summer.  He is French Canadian and spends half of his time in Canada and the other half in Florida.  He was a lot
of fun to hang out with, and we enjoyed his sense of humor and personality a lot.  We enjoyed fine food and spirits.

Paul says he is coming to Big Bend.  Like many of you, he is struggling with being able to contact the RV park but says
he is not giving up.  We look forward to you meeting him.  Our Rally's are becoming very International.

Photo is of our group on Nova Scotia, and as I recall it was Margaret Wishard's Birthday celebration.

Just an update to everyone.  I am attaching a new attendee list.  Pretty much the same
with the exception of Paul DeMariais.

Additionally due to a catastrophic failure of my Hydra-Lift motorcycle carrier I will NOT be
bringing my Harley to Big Bend which I really regret.  There are some great roads around
there to ride on.  I guess we may have to take the top off the new Jeep and go for a ride
topless.  Don't let my misfortune stop you from bringing yours.  Great roads in the Big Bend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Texas once again....

Wow I hope your lift didnt brake off for the frame.  I installed a cable lift for a  friends class A its  welded to the frame and has latch with some pins   that lock in place  if there is a cable failure.  Hopefully there wasn't a  jeep being towed.

The current issue of Westways magazine, a publication of the Southern California Auto Club, has a few photos of what they consider to be some of the best spots for star gazing in the country.  The attached photo is from a location within Big Bend National Park which, according to the article, has the least amount of light pollution in any of the NPS sites in the lower 48.

Hi y'all, I may be the guy that Mike's referring to. I joined this forum and made reservations at Maverick Ranch although I haven't received confirmation yet. It's not unusual to have to follow up and I will check back with them in a couple of days. A friend we travel with is trying to squeeze the Rally dates into his schedule as well.

What type of terrain and difficulty can we expect on the planned wheeling rides? Both of my Jeeps have 3" lifts and 32's but aren't equipped for hard core crawling. Looking forward to meeting the group and enjoying the Lajitas area... it's one of our favorite relatively close to home destinations!

Dave, great to see you here and glad to hear you and your wife will be joining us.

As far as wheeling, I am not sure about the exact area in Texas, but I am familiar with many of the Jeeps the members here have and your Jeep will fit right in.

Looking forward to meeting you and your wife in Texas.

Welcome David & Kay aka "Thunderfoot".

It has been a common issue in getting the RV park to respond or confirm, but everyone has been able to with some
persistence.  I am sure you will also.

As to Jeep performance, we're not sure.  Many of us have been to this area several times, but have not been wheeling
in the area.  As for me, I have purchased a new Jeep and will not have had an opportunity to get my lift etc. installed so
I will be running a stock Rubicon.  Lift, shocks and other mods will begin this summer.  Typically our wheeling accommodates
most all levels of Jeepdom, so bring what ever you want and go where ever you can is the order of the day.

Additionally if you're a shooter bring your firearms as we plan to have a day or two of all levels of shooting from pistols
to long range.  It should be good time.

We look forward to getting acquainted with you guys.

I just happened to realize we are under 90 days away from the Big Bend Rally so I thought
it might be a good time to go over some 'Please Do, and Please Don'ts' for our gathering.

1.  Please wear a name tag/badge of some kind.  This will help us old folks to remember
who you are.  If you don't wear a name badge, you will have to put up with me introducing
myself to you repeatedly. . .  It's Wendy's Rule.  "Wear your damn name badge" . . . .

2.  Many members have animals/pets/furry kids.  Most all of us like and enjoy them.
We do ask however that none of them attend any social gatherings where food will be served.
This is to include happy hours and pot luck dinners.  Some people also have an allergy to certain
pet dander and we just want to be sure everyone can participate and enjoy social time.

3.  Most if not all happy hours will include adult beverages.  Please enjoy responsibly.

More details may follow as time gets close.  We are really looking forward to warmer weather in
South Texas.

I didn't realize you and Darlene missed QZ this year.  That's too bad.  Chrystal and I really wanted to go but this stinkin' work thing got in the way and I am wearing Chrystal down on boondocking for more than a couple of days.

Part of my list pertains to being talked into a flag pole by Terry Brewer.  I ordered a flagpole with LED lighting before Christmas and it finally showed up this week.  I have also been fabricating a Watts link for the front suspension of our coach and want to finish up the machining and get it welded into place before TX.  I think that will be a good long test drive for it.  I also want to install a new Winegard Trav'ler satellite dish before TX.  There were multiple people responsible for talking me into that one from last year's rally.  I also want to rebuild my Roadmaster Sterling tow bar before the 2016 travel season.  I have all of the parts but I just can't seem to find the time to do it.

Mike.

Mike, sounds like you have plenty of work to keep you busy all winter. We had one of those flagpoles on our list also after seeing Terry's and others at Q last year. We are having solar installed on our coach for this years X-Mas present so should have plenty of power for a few more lights. Hope staying busy makes the winter go faster for you. Hi to Chrystal, and tell her to quit worrying about boondocking. See you soon.

Henry & I bought new flag poles at Hershey PA RV show.  Here are photos of mine.
It's mounted to the 4x4 crossbar on my Hydralift.  I need to drill a hole in the bottom
of this as I found out recently it holds water.  I need to drain it.  But for now Old Glory
is flying proudly.

The LED Light on top is from Amazon.  I think it was less than $20.  They wanted a bunch
more for them at the RV show.   I guess they don't think we have internet in our coaches. . .

It looks really good at night. . . .  See you in Big Bend.

Welcome Jennifer & Dan.  Can I get a last name for the list of attendees???

As to RV01, I have no real idea about the layout of the park.  I have looked at the map and several people
have indicated an assigned spot.  I suspect we will take over about half of the park or so.  I don't think being
in any one site will be better than another.  As long as you told them you're with RVFORUM.NET I think they
are grouping us together.

We look forward to getting to know you guys.

A couple items to note:

Stock jeeps or other 4x4's will have no problem negotiating the trails we will be exploring in Big Bend.

Also, please remember from an earlier post that Maverick Ranch RV Park has a strict no light policy so everyone can enjoy the magnificent night skies.

So all of you folks that have or will be assembling your Alien landing craft flagpole lights, you will have to wait for another rally to have your Walt Griswold lights competition!

Very happy to see the attendance list grow and I look forward to sharing a part of Texas that I was connected with for many years.

For people that will be making a reservation at Maverick Ranch RV Park, try calling:

That number may get you straight through to Toni, the park manager.

Please be patient as from personal experience, everything runs on 'Terlingua Time'.

National Park Week   April 16-24

I know a lot of us have annual National Parks pass that we pay $80 for each year.

However for those of you that don't, the NPS has set the date of our rally as FREE National Park admittance week!

It looks like my lobbying efforts in DC with the NPS was successful !

And yes, I will glady accept a cold beer in Lajitas !

I am sure there is an itinerary, however, like Betty always says, they are set in Jell-O.  They change dependent upon weather, interest and sometimes for no apparent reason at all, however, it is always a blast.  We learned not to get too set on the plans and just to arrive and "wing it".  Although that has been hard for me and my OCD but I keep coming back. ;D

Itinerary
April 17-24

Have Fun!

I am staring to lay out a prelim schedule now to enable me to better define Jeep routes for the week.  There will be Jeep days when most people will want to join as we will be visiting some of the more interesting portions of the national park.  Then there will be Jeep days when the focus will be on wheeling trails. I am going out to Big Bend tomorrow and will be scouting new trails for 3 days to see what I can connect up to stuff I have already driven/ridden.  I will be wheeling every day except our scheduled shooting day and excursion across the Rio Grande to Mexico.

Henry has hiked portions of the national park and he will be leading at least one or two hikes and there are many other activities that people will probably break off into groups to go and explore.

Big Bend is huge and there will be tons of fun activities to enjoy!  But as Mike said, a set itinerary is not the norm and it allows some flexibility for everyone to enjoy the rally.

Does anyone have a good idea on a way to get out final details to everyone before the start of the rally?  Or is it incumbent on everyone to come to this thread for any announcements?

Thanks,
Gary

I think it's safe to say that with most rallies we post it here where the attendees will be checking in more or less regularly.  Many people will be on the road as the rally time nears and this is the most logical way for everyone to keep in touch.

Agreed.  I think the forum thread is the best place to communicate leading up to the rally and then stress the point of trying to make the first night's happy hour as there is a lot of information exchanged then.

Sorry to be loosing the Brucker's and Nussbaumers from our list.  We understand life happens.
We look forward to crossing roads with you both somewhere in the future.

I found this interesting article about the border town of Boquillas that is just across the river
from Big Bend.  There is some politics in it about the proposed wall, but just overlook that part
and read about the village.  It will be available for tour and would be an interesting day or part
day trip for the more adventurous.

In addition I am making contact with a well known "Birder" who is working in Big Bend NP to see
if they are available to lead a bird hike for those who want to see some of the BBNP wild life with
two very capable Ornithologists.

I am beginning to think one week might not be long enough for me. . . . .

We look forward to seeing everyone in about 60 days ! ! ! !

Sorry to see a few people will not be making it to Big Bend. We will miss you guys. Let me remind those that are coming to stock up on groceries and ammunition.
Gary, Larry and myself are going to meet a few days earlier and pre run some of the trails and set up a agenda. There will be several things to do each day. Like Mike said nothing will be set in stone.
To my buddy Neal we will be back in the Conroe area around the 13th of March. We will be staying at Sunset and meeting up with Larry and Loretta. Also our friend from Australia are coming in for the party at Big Bend.

Mike you really don't know how far from civilization you will be. So bring a real sharp knife so we can skin out some of the Javelinas. That a pig to you city folks! Actually a peccary or skunk pig.  The closest Walmart is way over a hundred miles. Maybe Larry will bring some reloading equipment in case you run out.

Sorry to get off topic of the rally but Chrystal and I have a few questions for you "Texan's".  We are looking at our stopping over points and was curious as to you Texas travelers where you have stopped and if you can recommend someplace for a night stopover.  I think we are going to push hard on day one and make it to Albuquerque (630-miles) and then it doesn't look like much else between there and Lajitas so we were thinking of El Paso.  Then from El Paso into the rally on Sunday.  Can anyone recommend a place in or around the El Paso area for a quick over-nighter and possibly someplace to eat that if in El Paso you just cannot miss?

Then on the leaving the rally, has anyone been to Roswell, NM?  We have never been there and thought we might take a slightly different route leaving and stop over for a night in Roswell, NM and get all aliened out.  Thought it might be kind of neat to see.  Is it worth it or not?  Where have you stayed in Roswell that you would recommend?

Also open to any other options coming via the Northern Utah route.

Thanks.

Mike.

Mike,

Andrea and I did a stopover in Roswell a few years ago.  We went to the UFO Museum and out to eat that night.  I consider the place to be a bust.

However, we did stop at Elephant Butte Lake State Park for a night on a recent trip and it was so beautiful we stayed another day.  It has super easy access from I-25 and is at the same latitude as Roswell.  It might be easier if you stay there as it will be quick to get back on the interstate and and not have to navigate secondary roads from Roswell to Texas.

Just to mention, there are a few great Jeep trails in the area.  We hit a trail for several hours that meandered in and out of a riverbed in a beautiful canyon.  Roscoe has done the same trail before as well.  I know you won't have the time but I wanted to throw that out.  It is $14/night w/o sewage, $18 with.

See you guys in Texas !

Gary

Roswell is a good stop. We recommend it, but don’t expect too much. We stayed a couple days last year. The international UFO museum and research center (small entrance fee) is a must stop, and is worth seeing for the ones of us who “want to believe” that the “truth is out there”. There are tons of documents and pictures of the saucer crash and “cover-up” (be prepared for lots of reading) and background to satisfy your inner geek. Plan for an hour or two. The actual “crash site” is quite a way out of town, and I’m not sure it is worth the trip. There are lots of other alien related attractions around town, and all will be glad to take your money. Plant tongue fully in cheek and just enjoy the kitsch and have fun.

We stayed at Bottomless Lakes state park, about 10 miles east of Roswell. The RV sites are well spaced and had water and 20/30/50A electric. Dump station at the campground, and a few sites have sewer connection. The string of small lakes have an interesting geology, and the largest is popular with the locals for swimming, paddleboats, canoeing and kayaks. There is a small but nice museum at the visitor center on the formation of the lakes and history. Hiking trails and a bird watching area round out the attractions. I will recommend staying there. The only drawback is that there is quite a fly population, attracted to the water. Annoying, but otherwise a great place.

See you at Big Bend
Dan

Thanks Dan, I appreciate the recap.

For those familiar with the El Paso area, any recommendations and must sees?

I was looking last night and there is a new KOA in Anthony, just north of El Paso that looks to be easy on/off of I-10 unless someone has a better suggestion.

Thanks.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park opened in 1972 -

You can take 6 hour round trip hike to Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. 8,751 ft

They have overnight RV parking. There are no RV services available, just parking.

Thanks for the feedback.  We were looking at the map last night and leaning toward pushing through El Paso and maybe stopping in Van Horn as that we it is only a short 200-mile drive in on Sunday so we won't be as rushed.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback.  I am sooooo looking forward to the trip and seeing all our friends.  I need a freakin' vacation, I haven't had used a single vacation day since end of October 2015 so I could save them up for this trip and the 2016 RVing season.

Mike, if you just want to boondock in Van Horn,  look for the McDonalds (& I think Super 8 next door) - western side of Van Horn on the south side I10.  There is a big lot behind the McDonald's where truckers stop.  If you do stop there and do not want to be in the middle of the truckers park as far south and back as far as you are comfortable.

If your going east on I 10 from N M when you get to the texas border look for  trans mountain MM 6 . Taking this Trans  mountain road by passes El Paso stay on it like 25 miles and it will come out east of El paso by verison city with plenty of big truck stops. There are no more then 10 miles of good Mt with nice pull overs . I very seldom see any trucker taking using Trans mountain.

HELLO ALL ! ! ! !

We want to bring to your attention that we will be having at TWO meals in the park
that will be a Community Effort for your grocery planning.

FIRST - Henry, Gary & I will conduct a Texas Style Fish Fry.  For those in Palo Duro
and other rallies that have had Henry's Fried Fish, you know how good it is.  Bring a
side dish to share and your own table service.  We know you will enjoy fresh Texas Catfish.

SECOND - GRILL NIGHT.  Bring your own meat to grill and a dish to share.
What ever you want to cook, we will have several grills set up and you can cook your
own.  We have done this at Moab, Palo Duro and several other get togethers.   It's always
fun.

We also will have some dining out options that we can all take advantage of.  Gary has
lined up some really good options with local restaurants.

SUNDAY evening we will have our first Happy Hour and Meet & Greet.  We will organize a
schedule then and get the party started.

We're getting excited to see and meet everyone.

As a item worth mentioning, I have been communicating with a gentleman from another forum who is currently staying at the Maverick RV Ranch resort and he commented that the water pressure is excessively high there, over 85 PSI.  I wanted to remind everyone to make certain to use a pressure regulator on their rigs so no surprises sneak up on you.

Thanks.

Shooting Sports Day in Lajitas

Just a reminder. We will have a day scheduled for everyone that would like to enjoy a day of shooting targets and clay pigeons at a private ranch during our rally.

For those of you that will not be bringing a firearm but would enjoy busting a few caps, I will be bringing:

.45 pistol
9mm pistol
12 ga shotgun
20 ga shotgun
AR-15 rifle (.223/5.56)

You are welcome to shoot any or all of them but you will need to supply your own ammunition.

If you have any questions, please pm me.

See you in Lajitas!

Drug it a little ways till someone flagged us over. Unfortunately, the repair won't be made in time for us to make the trip. We were so looking forward to the rally! Have fun everyone. We are in Elephant Butte, NM finishing up an FMCA Jeep rally.  I would like to  " be on some agenda" to let  rally members know of an FMCA benefit we all have with  FMCA membership.  One of our  members had a heart event  and was airlifted to Hospital in Albuquerque.  Because I got him the  phone numbers to call,  his wife's airfare from MT to NM was covered and his motorhome will be driven home to  MT by FMCA. I'd like a few minutes of your time so you can program the  number into your phone!

If you don't call in time , coverage is less likely!

Bring firewood if you can!

I have arranged for a late afternoon/ evening Jeep trek into an old mining camp where I have a very good local musician that will be playing around a big fire for us.  It should be a very fun experience for everyone.

So, if you can, please bring some firewood and kindling along with you.

We arrived late last night.  The evenings are nice and pleasant with temps in the mid to high 80's in the afternoons however with shade the temps are fine.

Gary and Andrea

We are in Elephant Butte, NM finishing up an FMCA Jeep rally.  I would like to  " be on some agenda" to let  rally members know of an FMCA benefit we all have with  FMCA membership.  One of our  members had a heart event  and was airlifted to Hospital in Albuquerque.  Because I got him the  phone numbers to call,  his wife's airfare from MT to NM was covered and his motorhome will be driven home to  MT by FMCA. I'd like a few minutes of your time so you can program the  number into your phone!

If you don't call in time , coverage is less likely!

Betty, why not post the number so those not attending will have it.  Then when you're at the Rally, you can remind everyone so those that have CRS, like me, can make a timely note.   ;)

Glad to hear some of you are starting to arrive safe and sound.  I have been burning the midnight oil for the past several weeks now and I am finally checking off the last item on my list tonight so I can relax and enjoy the drive, and what a drive it will be.

I received a private message from David, aka Thunderfoot, earlier today stating that he was saddened that he had to cancel due to some unforeseen issues but wanted to express his thanks for the warm welcome he had received on the forum.  He hopes to be able to meet up with the group at a later date and location.

See "ya'll" soon.  See, I'm already practicing my "Texan" language. ;)  I should have it nailed down by the time we get there.

I hope everyone gets this note before they strike off on the road.

Our MEET & GREET will be held on the veranda by the pool in the center of the park
on Sunday.  We will begin about 4 pm and will go on until we can't go no more.
Bring your own 'beverages' and let's not worry about snacks etc. for this initial meeting.

We will provide information on the MANY activities that Gary, Henry & I have come
up with and will set up a schedule to attempt to get them all done this week.

This is going to be fun.  Weather here is quite warm during the day, and the nights are
cool.

Park Wi-Fi is adequate for Email / Facebook and the occasional other contact.  Netflix, streaming, Skype and
other applications requiring higher speeds likely won't work.  Our AT&T is 2 bars or so.  Jan and Olga are on
Verizon and report adequate as well.

The first event I went to in T or C was 7 year ago there was big  rocks and cement barricades set up for a course , they also had a huge crane set up with strap lifting jeep up that got high centered craziest thing I ever seen.  I here from Silive she is up in Mohave working and taking her  jeep on some wild trips.

The RVForum  Big Bend Rally is in Full swing.  An orientation meeting was held tonight at the Maverick RV Park in their beautiful ( but echoey)  hall) and  lasted 2 plus hours  with tons of details on what to do and when for the whole week.  While I was taking copious notes I shall only attempt  one day at a time to report on next day activities. Please recall  RV plans are always in Jello.

1. Welcome said Big Larry a couple of times.
2. Safety talk...  call 911 if you fall off your ladder or use your car alarm to  shout out to the rest of us as phone service may be limited. FMCAssist emergency help is available  for FMCA members ( see separate post)
3 Introductions... wear a name tag and  welcome to all  newly found members!  Some were circling the park over and over so were invited to join us!
4. Two groups will set out in the morning. BOTH leave at 8:30 am. Despite what you were told at meeting.  One will follow  Gary    30 miles  over pavement and then a dirt road to the  border of Mexico.  Bring passports have lunch in  Mexico.  Henry  will lead the group who wants to go on the paved road to the  Mexico   point.  Park in lot and take a row boat over the river to Mexico.  Lunch, shopping will be available.Bring $ 1 dollar bills or 5's  We will all go by hot springs so bring towel and suits if you wanna soak ( or come back another day)

Lots of restaurants were mentioned but Gary really likes Starlight Theatre and Maribitos went there tonight and confirmed its rating  of  very good!! Monday night  they have a 2 for 1 cheeseburger .  Happy hour daily at 5 to nail down   plan of the next day.

Rough schedule:
Tuesday  shooting day, bring your chairs and lunch  or hike  6 miles .    Fish fry at night  .. bring a side dish.
Wednesday - Free Day  but  a challenging Jeep trail will run to the State Park ($5)  and at 5pm  leave for a trip to old mining camp and local musician $5 donation .  Bring a  hotdog to  roast or your lunch   or eat before hand.
Thursday  --All day Jeep trail any vehicle  can go. Pizza at a local place and sign up Wed if interested.
Friday Rough rocky trail Jeep ride
Saturday-  AM hike to  waterfall ( 2 miles) Grill night , bring your own meat and cook your own and bring a side dish.

The hosts did a wonderful job of letting us know where to get fuel, groceries and restaurants but my shorthand is not so good. Hope you were listening well !
Photos to follow.

I am excited to make  new friends and explore this new to us area!

After the meeting,   several groups gathered outside their  RV's for fellowship.  So  never ever just go  to to your rig and stay there.  Wander the park to see what's happening!

We did 186 miles of hiway and 2.5 rated back roads today led by Bajarat and topped it off with 2 for 1 CheezeBurgers at the Starlight Theater/Restaurant.  Great stools on the front portal.  Nice weather with a mix of clouds, mist, some rain and more sunshine.  We must be at the western edge of the massive storms sweeping through central and east Tx these days.

We get to go shooting tomorrow.

Well RVForum friends,

This is the first time  since I have been attending many, many happy RVForum Rallies that I  missed  happy hour! I've learned Awards were presented and I will catch up with details on recipients and do photos later.   If you recall we said all RVForum activities are planned in Jello.  Well I had  3  such events today.  I will call them CLOSINGS!

We left Maverick  RV Park at 8:25 for  8:30 departure  to  a Big Bend Run and trip to Mexico. I packed  light snacks (2 cheese sticks,a few  carrots and 3 radishes.) as lunch in Mexico was the PLAN!  Had  lots of bottled water for  the expected high temperatures.  Well it was very cool, misting which turned into a rain as we hit the air down spot. The first closing was a  GATE across the trail.  Gary  quickly  regrouped and led the  8 4 wheel drive vehicles another way that did not involve crossing that private ranch. Seems it is  prime season for blooms on prickly pear cactus. They were plentiful. Signage at Big Bend is  very clear but not so accurate.  Sign said Telephone Canyon but  NO CELL SERVICE was available all day . Beautiful mountain ranges were evident all day with flowing clouds. Gary P  said it was Mexico and  so nice!  The second closing of the day was Boquillas  Crossing which was our way into  Mexico.  Seems they are closed every Monday and Tuesday.  (I'm sure there is an award in there!)   This was  going to  be our lunch spot and since we hit the gate at  nearly 3:30 in the afternoon, the snacks were gone, the hunger factor was BIG so we headed to the  advertised Starlight Theatre restaurant for their 2 for  1  burgers!  Guess what?  They were closed! Only had to  wait 30 minutes for them to open but with  no lunch, an early dinner was imperative! Thus no  happy hour.

We did have fun with their  bar stools as pictured. With full tummies we are again Happy Campers.

Again I can only  tell RVForum rally participants to  walk the  park in evening and follow the laughter to hear stories of the day.  We are relieved that the  IRS letter we received in our mail packet yesterday has been resolved.  We did not steal our  own identity and our refund is "in the mail" within  9 weeks!

Tomorrow folks will go shooting, hiking or choice of  activity.  I made  part of my potluck dish to share tonight! ( Crispy  cabbage coleslaw)  my  stand by dish! Should go well with the fish fry!

And I'm not kidding, those of you who won an award tonight will be captured tomorrow! If you won an award you will be responsible for d presenting it to someone else tomorrow.

Well the awards were handed out on the first day of our Big Bend Rally.

"THE SHERRIF" award went to Don Nesbitt for 'taking charge' of things during the Henry Wishard Paved Roads trip to Boquillas Mexico.  I am not sure what Don did, but Henry, who handed out the awards, said he was large and in charge during the trip, so Don is The Sherrif.

The Care Bear was handed out by Henry to Neal Brussell.  I understand it had something to do with helping a lady out of the Hot Springs where their group stopped.  What guy would not want to help a lady out of a hot tub.   I am thinking there might have been ulterior motives here, but Neal always the gentleman jumped in (figuratively) to help her out.

The GOOFY award was given to our Co-Host Gary Phillips.  The day had a number of ups and downs as Betty Brewer's post outlines.  It's odd when you go to visit a foreign country, and find it closed.  However Henry & I also took some of the heat and we accepted the Goofy award for all of us.

A good day was had by all and many of our group wound up at the Starlight Theatre for half price burgers which were excellent, or enjoyed food and fellowship with friends and family.

We look forward to todays adventures....

The pavement group had a fun day with a few minor set backs. Started the day with 8 vehicles and headed for the Terlingua cemetery and Ghost Town. We then headed into the park to visit the Basin which was socked in with clouds and rain. We found out at the visitor center that the crossing at Boquillas was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Leaving the Basin we arrived at Panther Junction for a 20 minute film of the Park.
We then proceeded to the Hot Springs and was right away greeted with a 4-5 ft. snake. Harmless Coach Whip! Walked around the area visiting the Hot Springs and other points of interest in the area. Our last stop was the lookout at Boquillas Canyon. It was a fun day by all.

Today we went to the "range" and exercised a rich inventory of firearms.  A wide variety of pistols, 9mm, 357 cal, 380 cal, 45 cal, 38 cal... re.volvers and semi-automatics.  Then we moved into the long guns... another wide variety from 22 cal to the big bore guns that can reach hundreds of yards.  In a parallel site, the shotguns were focussed on clay pigeons that were colored orange.  After that we played some golf at the incredible Lajitas Resort Golf course... hole after hole of long par 5's and a variety of greens and elevated tee boxes.  If the cart paths were on a Jeep trail, surely it would have been rated a 4 in steep switchbacks.  The evening gathering featured Henry's and Big L's fish fry... fresh fried catfish caught fresh from a Texas Lake with a variety of potluck veggies, salads and deserts.  Very tasty.

I was appointed tonight as  club photographer for the evening.  I was delighted that awards were posted last night and I  have more for tonight. Subject to all corrections and additions!

The Armadillo/Sheriff  was given to a grinning  Suzanne as as woman who shot almost all the weapons today  like a pro. As a first time, no experience whatsoever  person, I am told  she may  have  fired the most rounds today.  Pictured with her is  her faithful mentor Charles who gave her pointers, lessons and moral support today.

Neal presented Andrea the Texas Bear Award to Andrea who led 6 of us on a 6 plus mile hike through the Big  Bend State Park today on Fresno trail. It was gorgeous with beautiful  cactus blooms and very  toasty weather!  She got  us all back safe and sound  even with a trip to the Rio Grande where we decided not to wade across the river to Mexico. I show  over 19,000 steps today!

Betty  presented Goofy to Mary Ann  as she continued to drop her water bottles on this hot desert hike.  One such drop resulted in a punctured bottle and we all scrambled to save every drop!  Water is a precious commodity in the desert!

Our fishermen, cooks and co hosts shined tonight as they prepared and served a fish fry, hushpuppies and the rest of us rounded out the feast with our side dishes! Yum and thank you

Thanks were  given to Gary P who arranged the shooting target range location today as the former landowner of the area. Such a unique opportunity for folks at a rally!

Rounding out the day was another exquisite slide show  presented by Ron M.  A photo cannot begin to capture his works so I just got a screen shot of his first  slide!  Classical guitar music was a calming end to our tiring busy day!

Final photo show  the new RVForum  motto with  bumper stickers presented by Alan to Betty and Sheila!

Trip to  Mexico on the agenda in morning,  one more try!

Today, we went to Mexico!  Viva Mexico.  Turns out the trip to Mexico involves driving into BBNP, then going to the Boquillas Crossing, going thru a US Border Facility, taking the seronated ferry across the Rio Grande and then chartering a guide plus a burro to go to the village of  Boquillas.  Here find a village of 285 people that reflects the juxtaposition of a small remote village with no paved streets but operating on 100% renewable solar energy, a gravity fed water utility and satellite dish phone/TV.  The nearest gasoline station requires a 4 hour drive of 160km.  Simple yet sophisticated at the same time.  There are few other places in the world that have 100% renewable energy with a battery system for the time when the sun doesn't shine.  The landscape photos illustrate the perception of distance by using color... light blue for the mountains in the background but more intense blue of the mountains in the midrange and reds/greens for the foreground.  Interesting.

Wednesday April 20, 2016.  Mid way through rally...
Awards tonight were presented in our cool air conditioned room with 94 degree temps outside.   Many of us were wilted from our day's activities. But  on with the show....

1. Andrea presented  Henry with Texas Care Bear Award for the most delicious fish fry she has ever had! Cheers all around and  total agreement!
2.  Suzanne presented Sheriff in Charge Award to Joni who gave us hints on visiting Boquillas with ones and fives for tips and  spending.  She gathered a crowd of children with her  money  give away.
3.  Mary Ann presented George the Goofy Award for getting the fastest horse at day's end and riding er uh  galloping  off like the Lone Ranger leaving his wife in the dust!

A highlight of our trip into Boquillas,Mexico today was the 3/4 mile mule ride into the city.  We had the choice of walking, taking a  pick up truck or taking a burro ride.   Pictured here are photos of those of us who chose to  take the burro ride.

This experience was by the way a highlight of the  entire trip!  Some had never ever riden a mule in some  40 plus years! Some wondered if their balance would be ok.

Early today we tried the golf course again.  Better this time but very intimidating nonetheless.

Then we took the River Road toward Presidio and attached some photos.  When we took the photo of the "Don't Cross the Border Sign", a black helicopter flew over but did not stop.  The geologic formations along the Mexico side of the river in this region, several thousand foot high cliffs..., might eliminate the need for a wall in this area... Tunnels also seem unlikely...  LOL.

The temperature reading looks blurry but blame the photographer, 101 deg!

The cloud formation photo was taken yesterday, late in the day looking East from the RV Park.  Must have been a big thunder storm?

Thursday was a day of  2 groups Jeeping and lots of other activities including golf, hikes, shopping and resting. Terry went for a car wash ( 50 miles away) .

Awards were their usual hoot tonight as the group has now really bonded and the real  stories and secrets are  coming out!

Jonni  presented a newly tattooed Sheriff to Gary P  for leading the  2 Jeep groups  today  with  no closed anything!

Henry presented Charles with our Texas Care Bear for helping the  pick up trucks get turned around on the trails today.  He appeared not to know he had even helped!

George  gave a  presentation  to Joint winners, Cindy and Leo.  Seems she forgot the bread for sandwiches on the run for lunch and then he forgot his chair at the mine. Topped off with the information that  Leo  forgot his  phone at Wal Mart on his way here, they won as a couple. However late information shared gave Cindy the hands down exclusive rights to Goofy today.  Seems she went into the National  Park Visitor Center to purchase  her Senior National Park Pass ( old Geezer pass to some of us)  She presented her drivers license to  the Ranger who told her she was not old enough to qualify for the Pass.  She asked,"Then how old am I?"

Some of the group stayed back and took the river road today. One of the most scenic roads in the area. Several drove the road all the way to Presidio, Texas

Henry, it was great meeting you today at Maverick Ranch.

We are driving into the park tomorrow morning and going on a short hike to Cattail Falls about a 2-1/2 mile round trip if you guys are interested. Leaving at 9:00am.  Here are a few pics today from the hike up Lost Mine trail. Nobody found the mine I guess that why they call it Lost Mine. We ended up doing around 17,000 steps and we all feel it.

Here is the group photo taken this evening after our grilling session and good food.  Would have liked better light for the shot, but we had overcast skies today.  Great group and very cooperative for the shot.  Only needed one.

A small group of six opted for a shorter hike and a shorter drive into Big Bend Ranch State Park today (25 minute drive to Trailhead)  to hike Closed Canyon. It was  advertised as an easy to moderate hike of  1.4 miles. We checked it out  yesterday and at  96 degrees decided to return in  morning when it was cooler. ( good call)

We left camp at  8 am!  Good for Terry for getting up early and not complaining! We used our Texas State Park Passes purchased last year in Palo Duro Canyon and got a free day use  pass.
Pictured is a group shot at Trail  head.

It was a beautiful slot canyon carved by water and turned into a moderate trail very quickly! We did  some mighty fine rock scrambling today! Laughing all the way. Saw a frog, heard  birds, saw  bees swarming( where we turned back)  and loved the day, which was topped off  by  lunch at  Lajitas RVResort restaurant across from Maverick RV Park.  While spinach salads were small the  burgers were BIG.  Lovely setting, lovely view!

April 22, 2016 Earth Day

Awards today  were fun and revealing!
Charles presented Leo the TX Care Bear Award to Leo  because Leo held hands with is wife  all day. Charles said it reminded  him of his relationship with his lovely wife Robin!  AWWWWWW  So both  photos will show up of  happy couples!

Sheila nominated Terry as  Sheriff of the day as Terry had the  longest legs and stride to rescue his  stranded hikers in  many deep holes today.

No one could think of anything Goofy today so we  used  long standing rule that  awards  could be retroactive!   Seems  a couple  of days ago  while  crossing an international Border and talking with Custom  Agent this  winner could not answer the question " Where are you going!"  Chrystal has now figured out where she is  going because Mike told her!

Many were thinking it and then it happened.  Henry presented an Extra Special  Person Award to make  Mike Z (zmotorsport) an  Honorary Texan !  The  BIG cup signifies all things Texan and the Big heart of our friend Mike Z and lovely wife Chrystal for  coming so far in so few days to Texas to join the RVForum rally.  His expertise is renowned on RVforum and his  friendship is priceless.  He gives  credit due as deserved to lovely wife.
Once upon a time he joined  a rally of this RV Forum not knowing a  single person and look at the friends he has gained now!   You too  can be such a person if you join in and  give of yourself and your  expertise!

So moving on with our big and almost final day of this rally we held  a grill your own meat night and bring a side dish.

So many  Baby  Webers BBQ's were in force such that we could have been a commercial!  After the  meal  Ron Maribito herded us all into the  super shot you've already seen on this post!

Some of the meat was  way too rare for me!   But the side dishes were wonderful!

After  grill your own meal tonight and ..............Thanks to Gary  Phillips we had  a first activity  that I  can recall at an RVForum Rally. We played  BINGO! It was a winner take all  black out session with a  buy in  of 2 cards for $5.

The  pot was $140 and when you had only 2 numbers left to win, you had to stand.  The near winners were mostly women but alas the last number called was won by Ken Kuch .  $140, not  bad for coming to  dinner!
Gary gave me the remaining cards so I see Bingo in future RVForum rallies!

It looks like we missed a really fun rally!  Sure glad to see Sheila finally got on that mule.  ;D  The hikes look like the kind we love.  Great photos.  Our current internet connection is poor so only about half the photos have come in.  The others eventually turned into an X (timed out?) but the thumbnails are better than nothing.  ::)  We've missed sharing the fun times with you!

Meanwhile we have enjoyed being with Jerry's family.  It's raining today and we opted out of sitting in the rain to watch our nephew play in a lacrosse game which means we have some time to catch up on your rally.  Safe travels to all as it ends and you go your separate ways!

It's winding  down, several pulled out quietly this morning leaving  vacant RV spots and holes in our hearts! But the hearty  last remaining  RVForum participants  played hard and toured well today.A morning  hike to Cattail Falls was supposed to  be  a short  2  miles but I  ended up with  11,790 steps today!  Hummmmmm I hiked  with Ken, Sheila and the  entire group while Terry and  Richard drove the park to The Basin, St Elenya Canyon  and Maverick Road.  We somehow met up for  lunch at the visitor center.   Fun day and all  made it to the 5 pm final Happy Hour.   Most  went across the street to Lajitas Inn for  dinner!

Awards tonight:

Tough Texan hats were presented to  resident Texans, Ron and Shirley.  At  84 he continues to  be amazing in every respect. From his photography to his resilience (recall he fell off his ladder the first night we arrived) his hiking ability, his photographic skills  and his ever present positive attitude.  We know his beautiful  redhead wife (who rocked the  Texan hat) is  his inspiration and love!  Aren't they  cute?

The Rally hosts Larry, Henry and  Gary announced their  retirement from leading RVForum  rallies for a while and were given a big cheer for the  magnificent job they did on running this Big Bend Rally .  Rally hosts come early, plan events and make sure all of us have a good time.  Hosts  are the last to leave a trail and  worry the most about weather,  plans and locked gates!  Bingo is a new tradition, thank you Gary, Hats awards and  prizes  were the  generous gestures from Team Henry and  Margaret. Larry was  the  MC with the most verbose voice and ran Happy Hours with skill and humor.  Loretta  was  behind him  all the way ! Big thanks to those native Texans for making us  feel  true Texas hospitality!

Texas Care  Bear had so many nominations today that  a Group award was  made!  All were to  touch  Care  Bear  and Jan had to be reminded to  only touch the Bear!   Suzanne thanked all who helped her  over the big boulders today and for  all who helped   fishing  for her fallen sun glasses out of the stream below the boulders.  She was truly grateful for a job well done  in a very  precarious spot!  There was another reason for  a Care Bear recipient and it was   Margaret but sorry  I  could not recall the details from my spot.  Someone help me fill in details  of this caring  Framily!

Terry already told you today  that he was "Sheriff for the day" (as seen  in many  of his photos)   and traveled around the  Park with his navigator Richard.  When  I asked him who  would win Sheriff , he said the only person he saw all day was Richard so Richard  would win for  being a perfect navigator! And Richard was silent when his pacemaker went into action to  keep up  with  pace they traveled over a washboard road.

Some how  I got  Goofy... I don't know why . I did nothing  Goofy on this trip!  But  maybe Goofy will show  up at a rally in the near future and I'll be prepared !!!!!

Gwen and I also left Lajitis is morning and are recouping in Kerrville on our way to The Woodlands. We had such a wonderful time at the rally in Big Bend I can't begin to thank everyone involved with the experience. Without the planning, knowledge of the area and camaraderie of the group, we would have never enjoyed ourselves as we did. A special shout out to The Big Larry, Gary, Charles, and others for all their work making the rally such a success.  And to my friend and sometime neighbor Henry, I am grateful for the invitation to join the rally, thankful for your guided tours of the park and value your friendship.

Hope to see you all again soon,

certainly describes what we did.

Thank you to all who attended.  We love the RV Forum "Framily" and look forward to the next time we

I always have a big let down the day  after a rally.  I listened  as   rigs pulled  out as  early as o dark thirty when  Ron left.  I swear it wasn't even light yet. One by one, our  friends old and new pulled out heading west, east and north.

Not many went south into  Mexico ( at least I don't think they did)

If  you have not yet attended an RVForum rally, you have missed a great time!   No  matter where we go we bring our love of the RV lifestyle  with our sense of adventure in exploring an area.  This rally had hiking, shooting, eating, fish frying, jeeping, burro riding, trip to Mexico, touring a spectacular National Park  and making new friends! Does not seem to  matter where we go or when, we have a wonderful time.  Sincere thanks to readers of this thread and to all posters on this thread and to rally hosts and participants....as we said last  night  WE ARE FRAMILY!

Made Taos earlier today.  We had a 30-40 mph crosswind all the way from Roswell to the point where we crossed the Rio Grande again just west of Taos.  We now appreciate the length of the famous Rio Grande much more...It only took us 2 days but the same trip would have taken the earlier travelers going north from El Paso about 6-8 weeks or more.

Right now the outside temp has reached the low thirties... kinda chilly compared to Lajitas at 101 just a few days ago.  What a change!

Chrystal and I left 10 days ago in a blizzard, spent a week in the Texas 100+ degree heat and returned through snow today and running the furnace all day while traveling.

I was washing the coach and was nearly finished when the sky opened up on us. Now sitting at home relaxing with the furnace running.  :(

Oh well, I'm sure spring will eventually show up.

The rally has barely ended and I am already looking forward to the next one when we can see everyone again.

Hi R Steele:

Yes, I got your reply to our thread.  Big Bend is a cool place.  We held our Rally at Maverick RV Park.
February/March should be a good month to be around there.  Weather should be great.  By the dark
of the moon, you can star watch.  There are lots of interesting places to visit in the park.  Enjoy.
