Adding this to our plans for January.  We are camphosting at Death Valley National Park until mid-January and then expect to head to Q.  We have friends who stay at an RV Park there for the winter so may stay there as well and/or with the Monaco group.

We tend to not make to definite plans so we don't know where we will be staying yet but definitely will stop by the Forum Rally site.

We will be attending our first Quartzite rally. Have yet to fully commit to the desert versus a park  nearby as we are traveling with another couple. Personally would prefer to boon dock. Really looking forward to the event.

I hope you decide to join us. The comradarie, offers to join others in their daily quests, and the campfire at night make it a different experience. Your friends are certainly welcome also.

So How does this work, We are pre-planning to go, would be our first, so if we decide to do it , Notify you here? then do you save space for the expected group?

As Jeff mentioned in an earlier post, there are thousands of acres to choose from. The "small" area we typically use has room for twice the number of rigs I've ever known to be there, then at least that much again, with no crowding, so you can just show up, if you like. The notification here just tells us that you are coming and sometimes helps a little planning if anyone has something that is attendance-sensitive. But you can certainly "just show up" if that's your preference.

You may have already done this, but for you and others who may be interested, go to the very first message in this Reply Topic and click on the link TOPIC.  Jeff has provided several links to places which help to describe Quartzsite.

It really is like nothing else we ever experienced in many years of RVing.  We've hung up our keys, but the times spent there at the forum rallies are at the top of our list of treasured memories.  I was not ever really comfortable boondocking, but we did at the forum QZ rallies and survived.  Plenty of people are there to help you "adjust" if you're not used to doing that.  You really need to try it once.  You'll probably go back many times.  ;D

Thank you for the information, I understand how this works now. We do a lot of dry Camping so there s no problem there.

We would really like to come to the rally and plan to be in that area. I am just not sure about the boondocking. Mark has to use cpap at night, we have a residential fridge and he really likes his television. Although we have beefed up the batteries to two 6V Trojans and have a 2000 watt inverter, I think we'd still have to run the generator some in the morning and evening. Would hate to be a nuisance to neighbors.

Also, I haven't checked temperatures for that time of year, but I don't sleep well if it is very warm in the RV. This usually means we have to have electricity for air or fans. All combined, this is why we haven't tried boondocking yet.

I haven't researched RV parks nearby as we'd prefer to stay with the group - much more fun! So I guess for now put us down for 1/20 - 1/29 Mark and Vicki Shorter, Indiana. And we will take any boondocking tips you'd like to throw our way.

Kevin and Pam intend on being there 24-29 January. It will be our first time at Quartzite, and we will definitely be boondocking. Ought to be fun!

Not to worry we all run our generators while at the rally, I believe that the quiet hours are 10 PM to 7Am.  I usually know it is 7 without even looking at the clock, some folks have their gens set for auto start.  It also will be cool at night, usually need heat in the mornings.

Hi all
I'm here looking over Quartzsite again and trying to make plans to join you fine folks for a second time..... nothing definite yet, but it's in the works.
To ease some of the questions about generator's and amount of space available....our first time time at this Rally we decided that since we have Dog's it would be better to set our rig up a tad away from others. We did just that but were still within 50-75 yard's to the gathering area. You'll have plenty of choices and still be involved.
So in a word, Dwight and Burnetta are a definite maybe...lol

If you park where the rest of us park, the $40 for two weeks also includes the use of the BLM's dump and fresh water site, just a few minutes east of our spot. I typically drive over there after six days, or so, depending on our exact usage.

I think there might be a honey wagon in town you could call, but I'm not sure of that.
Title: Re: 2017 QZ Rally - Reply Topic
Post by: Wendy on December 08, 2016, 10:03:31 PM
There is a honey wagon, it used to be $35. But, like Larry said, the BLM fee includes use of the dump station and water. The wait in line is usually about 30-40 minutes. We typically get in line and take showers whole we're waiting to use up the last of our water and fill up the grey water tank before dumping.

Quartzsite has a couple of small grocery stores including one with an excellent meat department.  Major grocery stores are in Blythe, CA (25 miles west) and Parker, AZ (35 miles north).  Parker also has a Wal-Mart.

Side x Side can drive the wash into town, but can't get to the grocery stores unless it's registered and road legal.

The surrounding area is full version of off-roading opportunities for 4x4s but as Lou mentioned to reach all retail and restaurants in QZ it will need to be registered.

Most of us try to bring the food we will need.

Jeff, Margaret and I won't be making the trip to Arizona this year. This would have been our 7th year. We have bought a home and have been busy furnishing it for the pass month. We have decided to downsize to a small motorhome and to have a home base to come back too.
We will continue our journey but not full time as we have done for the past 4 years. Going to miss everyone but don't count us out just a small life adjustment.

Jeff,

Please take us off the list. We decided to stay in Texas rather than head farther west. Really enjoying the park we are in. Hope to make Quartzsite some other time. Have fun everyone!

If staying a week at the Q rally site what is the cost and where do you pay? We will be there on about the 18th or 19th looking forward to meeting everyone. Thanks in advance for the responses.

The LTVA pass is $40 for 14 days, payable at the entry station off of US 95.  You'll get windshield decals for your RV and tow vehicle.

There's no charge to come in for the day, only if you're staying overnight or longer.

Weather forecast in SLC area is not looking good for our planned Monday departure. Tuesday looks better, but we will have to see. We had planned on arriving during the daylight, but winter days are still short. How difficult would it be if we arrived at night? I am thinking if we get a late start we should just stay in a campground a few hours away rather than arriving after dark. Comments?

When you aren't familiar with the area, it'd be difficult to find the RV Forum assembly area after dark. Currently we're the only ones here, arrived about noon today. We were in the Riviera RV Resort in Blythe last night, and it's a fairly nice place.

There is a chance we may have a change in plans. Our generator won't start this morning, though it ran fine last night. We get no reaction from pressing the start switch, either in the cab or on the generator itself. The circuit breaker on the genny is ON (and I cycled it).  I just heard back from Coach Net and they've arranged service in Q, so as soon as I get info, we'll get that started.

Will update this later.

Later: Coach Net put us in touch with a mobile tech in Q. He said he can get to us sometime today, but we're not sure when, so for now we've got the inverter off to conserve batteries, waiting to hear from the tech. Coach Net experience so far has been great, exactly what I've read described by others (this is our first time needing them).

Made it here without problem.  Got set up in a space despite having to take directions from two Park Place employees backing into a difficult space.  Went over to the event site and did one of the flea markets.  It was cold & windy and the DW wanted to come back early.  Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow.

We're only here for three days and there's so much we want to do!

The tech couldn't make it before dark, so we're now in Rice's Ranch (Hwy 95 & Keuhn) and waiting to get the genny fixed. Will be back to the Forum site after it's fixed (tomorrow, I hope).

Does anyone know directions coming from the South rather than the North?  If I came from 8 rather than 10 how far North on 95 do I go before I find the camp??  Is there any reason I shouldn't take that route?  I am coming from Tucson.

Good Morning,
drive north on 95, well past Yuma Proving Grounds, General Motors desert test area, past milemarker 99, known as RoadRunner about 6 miles until you come up to "LTVA Tyson Wells" on the left. Kind of the first time you see buildings on the left and right side of the road. Turn left and follow Jerry's route to our site. Kind of straight in after you stop and pay, keep to left past "15mph" sign, just past next "15mph" sign and there we are on the left. drive off main gravel road slightly past a small BLM post "brown stick" in the ground. See Ya

In Yuma, take Fortuna Rd. north from I-8 to US 95.  This will save about 15 miles versus continuing west to 95 in town.

As you approach Quartzsite from the south on US 95, the first camping area you'll see is the 14 day free area at Milepost 99, about 5 miles south of Quartzsite.  Our rally site is the next camping area on the left side of the road, about 3 miles further north in the La Posa Tyson Wash LTVA, 1 1/2 miles south of Quartzsite itself.

Turn left, get your camping pass at the entry kiosk ($40 for up to 14 days) and come on in!

If you are coming from Tucson, take I-10 to I-8 and at Gila Bend take AZ-85 north to I-10. Get off of I-10 at the first exit in Quartzsite, go south to Kuehn Road, turn right and go to stop light (US 95). Take 95 south just past mile marker 102 and turn into the pay station. This is much shorter than going through Yuma. R

We arrived yesterday afternoon just before it started to rain.  No attempt at a happy hour!  Last night we had a lot of rain and enough wind to shake the motorhome.

Someone added a wreath to our 541 brown sign so you'll know you've reached the correct turn when you see the wreath.  By the way, I learned something interesting from the (new) fellow who came out to put the BLM stickers on our motorhome and Jeep.  He was puzzled by my reference to "section 541" and told me the little brown signs refer to BLM ROAD 541 because all BLM roads have numbers.  So, after all these years of calling our camping area section 541 we can now call it road 541.

Jerry and I went up to the tent today.  The Two Crazy Ladies have moved to the RV show tent's exterior which I'm sure is a better location for them.  They seemed quite busy.  If anyone wants to get an RV Forum name tag, the Two Crazy Ladies have the template.  The name tags are yellow with blue print.  All you need to do is tell them your name and preferred home city and they'll make it for you (for a fee of course).  One of our few rules is to wear a name tag so that we can put names to faces and RVForum.net monikers.  The other rule is that no critters are allowed at food events because "some" of our furry children think the food is for them and not their human parents!  Either that or their long tails sweep the table clean.

Today was cool but sunny so we started happy hour about 4:00 p.m.  After spending some time chatting we went around the circle and introduced ourselves.  It's always fun to see old friends and meet new ones.  This was impromptu on my part so we didn't do any planning.  We were sorry to say both hello and goodbye to Larry and Maryann who are returning home tomorrow without their generator being repaired.

We'll be looking for the rest of you to arrive soon!

Seven Vehicles left at the sharp crack of  9 am led by Terry Brewer headed to "The ridge" for  our annual off road trip.  Our tail  gunner Larry Dodd had a CB radio so we knew we could keep most of the  people in a line.  Two of the vehicles were  very new to their  drivers and had never seen the size of some  of the rocks on the road like we found.  We managed a tight squeeze area with  no mishaps.  Did have a comment  from John that  he was glad he did not bring his pickup through that and he was a calm  passenger with Joe. (That is until he saw Jerry  pull a 3 wheel slide off road deal  and nearly go over! )

Big grins from Joe as well as Bill and his navigator Pam.  I  think they are now hooked on off road driving!  Larry is a seasoned off road driver who usually does sand but he liked the rocks today as a  different challenge.Wife  Billie did a bit of wandering  around to get perfect photos of  the desert.  Michael did  this run 2 years ago when  his rig was only 2 weeks old.  Now at  2 years old  his vehicle has had a make over!  Well equipped for all the fun challenges off roading can hold.  He offered a ride along   to Jo but  we  are  not convinced she is ready to purchase a  new Rubicon just yet!

Jerry and Ardra each drove 1/2 of the trail and their Grand Cherokee with air lift maneuvered through the rocks with  no problems.

Had a very short lunch overlooking a beautiful spot.  However  Loretta and I do not like wind nor  cold and we  had  both all  day. But  no damage, no flat tires, no bugs.  Back at  camp by 2:00.  More time for  big tent shopping.

Sadly the happy hour was blown  out with cold winds and we did not get to retell our off road stories today!

Great group.  Maybe  photos to  follow!  Stay tuned.

Another glorious Quartzsite Desert Day!  But  I am tired as I awoke early to hubby exclaiming " Oh my gosh it is 8:52 am !"  Seemed curious to me as it was  completely dark outside.  No signs of light creeping in behind any shade.  I did not feel as if I had enough sleep for the night.   But he was clearly alarmed as he had a   9:00 breakfast date with  Jeff and John.  (later Lou)

Seems his alarm went crazy with the use and non use of inverter to power the correct time.  The back up battery power to his alarm clock  must have failed as MY Clock  said it was 4:30 am!  Yep, it was 4:30 am.  Not  my time to arise!  But I was awakened and may not have  gone to sleep restfully again.  Gotta love boon docking!

So he went sound asleep again and awoke well in time for his breakfast with the "boys."

I joined the group walk at  10 am  and we took our trash to the  bins.  This is a  fun filled rally with a variety of events!  Trashy  people are pictured! And our route.  Not pictured is the  huge Jack rabbit that quickly  pranced across our trail and  did not allow time for a photo.

Jerry took  advantage of a pit toilet along the way but  the group did not  wait for him,  knowing he can walk fast enough  to catch up.  Well indeed he did catch up as he hitch hiked and got a ride with a fellow in a Yellow Polaris.  He does not get full credit  for the walk!

Promptly and I mean PROMPTLY  at 2 pm our potluck  began!  We invited the  new first time visitors to our Quartzsite  RVForum rally to go through potluck  line first. The newbies appreciated this  prompt start and opportunity to  go first.  However it did not much matter just how early you got to get in line as the wind was brisk and cooled food from table to  chair.  This did not  stop  me from a second trip.  I am always amazed how our potluck works with no planning.  We have just the right amount of main dishes , sides and desserts!  Yum and Yum.

I snagged a recipe for  Carol's chicken Tetrazinni .    Other recipes may be a secret.  I did  my usual   Crispy  cabbage salad  but I did forget to add in the toasted sesame seeds. DUH.  See recipes in RVForum Library for past hit recipes.
Make a request here and perhaps the chef will share the secret!

To give you an idea of  just how meaningful this RVForum Framily thing is, let me share  with you  that I've had phone calls  from
Chris and Mimi Pennings requesting reports and sending well wishes to our group. Terry exchanged emails with Jim and Pat Dick who were among the original attendees  in 1996 or so and  they vividly recall the "Transmission hill."  Jim and Tarry Johnson wished they could be here but had some  body parts to fix this  winter!  We miss everyone and you will forever be in our Quartzsite memories.  No one lost their  chairs or tables this year. (That I  know of)

To make our Rally MOST SPECIAL , Don and Peg Miller (who no longer  have a motorhome) showed up after a 3.5 hour drive from Camp Verde, AZ    with  blackberry pie.   Lorna Reiter lost dear husband Ned last spring but made  the  journey  solo from Spring Branch, Texas (near San Antonio) to  visit the RVForum Potluck group today.  She  may  win the award for those  coming the farthest to  our  gathering.

Photos:
Mike Lawrence jumped in to accompany Lorna in the Framily photo.  None of us are ever alone!  Don and Peg are legends in love of this FVForum. Thank so  much to our special visitors.

Yep this group is indeed FRAMILY, an acronym coined to  combine friends and family.  And to think we all met on the internet!  Crazy!

ok Betty  again.

Thank you to those who filled the white envelopes I  passed around at Happy Hour.   This Quartzsite  Rally has no fee but we do set January as the time to assess the value the RVForum  has been to you.

Did you get advice that saved you a service call?. Did you get advice that saved you money on a bogus  thing to join?  Did you get  advice on a campground  to attend ?  Did you get advice on a route from  PA to CA?  Did you  make a new friend?  Did you attend a rally and enjoy yourself?   Do you enjoy a continuing  contact with  RV like minded folks? Did you enjoy an off road adventure? Did you enjoy the potluck?  These are  things   enjoyed  by most with our RVForum and simply ask you consider making  a contribution to the running of the RVForum,  a privately owned entity.

I'm happy to report lots of white envelopes filled with green were returned. Thank you.  Plus I am happy   the DONATE button on the RVForum Home  page line with a DONATE button was discovered so you can use  pay pal or your credit card to support our RVForum!

I am among the fortunate who have been members of RVForum for a long time and really want our  new guests to have the opportunity to  learn as much about RV lifestyle  as I have and to make as  many friends!  The true test of the Quartzsite experience is do you return?

I will compose a collage of 2017 Q attendees and post it in the near future.  I will  not include the photo of me that Lou took as I'm certain  I  really look 15 years younger than the photo reveals!

I'm sure it was the fault of the photographer, Betty..  My photography skills suck, which makes it a good thing I work in radio and not TV.

I had to run across the highway and dump my tanks before the dump station closed for the night, and by the time I got back most of the group had dispersed.  It was good to see Lorna, even though it was only briefly.

Wonderful to see Lorna, Don and Peg looking exactly as I remember them from more than ten years ago!  I need to know how they accomplish that youthful look!  ;D   Count us among those who treasure memories of Quartzsite gatherings.  I'm so happy the tradition continues and am especially happy to see all the new faces who will continue to discover and enjoy the hidden beauties of the desert.  Quartzsite is truly a very special place!  As always, I really appreciate Betty's efforts to include all of us reluctant stay-at-homes.  :D

Thanks for the updates and pix here, Betty. Though it's not the same as being there, it at least keeps us from feeling completely left out when unable to be there, and lets us know what's happening.

I'm sure it was the fault of the photographer, Betty..

You are too kind!  The  photo was framed perfectly,  the  lighting just right, the focus sharp and clear and I'm still not using that photo!  Besides Terry was not in the photo so we will find another  photo and use it for the group collage.

We  arrived  back  home in  Yuma this afternoon and I opened the white envelopes.  WOW you  guys were very generous this year.  It is clear the RVForum has great value to the members.  In addition the DONATE button was activated with additional  generous donations!

It's going to  be a very good year!

Thank you Betty, Wendy and the rest of the crew for hosting another successful Quartzsite rally!

Although I missed Friday's 4wd trip, I got my off-road fix this morning.  I headed east on I-10 to the Gold Nugget Rd. exit, then instead of going south towards the Stone Cabin I followed the old paved road east through the pass.

Along the way I came across the road to the communications site at the top of the mountain and the gate was open!  So I went up, it's a well maintained but very steep road that zig-zags up the mountain face.  The last 1/4 mile is so steep they laid down a corrugated concrete roadbed to increase traction.

From the top I took some photos of Stone Cabin and the trails running off to the next ridge.  I'll post them tonight when I have wifi at my sister's house.

After descending from the mountaintop (low gear, low range!) I continued east to the end of the old pavement.  From there it became a trail that meandered through cactus and cholla to the Brenda exit.  It was a fun ride, but I wouldn't recommend it for anything larger than my Bronco II.  It's more of a quad trail, at the other end I met up with a quad group taking a break in a creek bed gravel bar.  They seemed surprised to see me but I was able to back up a little bit and let them by.

I second this but I would add Jeff for being the "digital" host - setting up this thread and tracking attendees.

We would like to thank all who make this years Quartzsite Rally a great success. Pam and I had a great week, even with the temps and wind. We met some great people.  And reacquainted with some from last year. It is always nice to be able to put faces to names. Betty was right when she said that we seemed to enjoy the trail ride we thought it was fantastic, Thank you Terry and Betty.  We will be back next year.

Thanks again for a great week

Looks like a lot of fun.  Thanks Betty for the pictures.  Also looks to be a little on the "nippy" side there.

I hope to get Chrystal there one of these days for a QZ rally.

Mike.

Home from the desert for another year.

What makes this so great is not only seeing old friends but making so many new ones that we can look forward to seeing again next year.

Next year we will have the 75 degrees weather we are experiencing today in the Phoenix area.

Thanks to all who attended!

Next year I will be there for sure. And if Bob is sick, then I will just pin his DD214 to his PJs and drop him off at the old soldiers home on the way through. :D

Post by: Larry N. on February 01, 2017, 04:31:58 PM
I finally got my pix into the computer. These were taken about 10 AM Jan 20. In the first one, a fifth wheel user had redecorated "our" saguaro. In the second one, someone had places a very nice rock sign on our firepit. The last one shows all of our group that were there at that time.

Update on generator: Got the beast in the shop this morning, and the tech said it's a bad control board, so it'll take a day or two to get it done. The genny has to come out of the coach for him to get to it, though.

We owe a big thanks to Dan West for not only making the RV Forum sign but repairing the fire pit by gathering rocks.

Yes, it had that "homemade" look, with a houselike appearance.

This was our second RV Forum rally, and our first time at Quartzsite. We will definitely be back! We got there late, but we were able to stay until Monday morning. Just before we pulled out, we heard our daughter was being induced for her first baby, two weeks early. She was 1750 miles away, and we made it here yesterday after 3 days of travel. Yup, 1750 miles in 3 days with the travel trailer. The baby is beautiful, mom is healthy and happy, and we are tired! Such a change to be in Iowa at 10 degrees after Q. Sigh. The trailer is mostly ok in the cold, but we will be running through propane.

As promised, here is a photo collage of most of the  people who attended Quartzsite 2017 Rally .  No names attached so you will have to  figure out those in attendance  by your own memory! Sorry it is so late. My  Life  happens to be rich and full!

My apologies for  those I missed.  Catch you next time!

If you recall  in the past we had an RVForum  group photo posed and rehearsed.  We usually let our potluck food get cold while waiting to smile.  This collage is a substitute for that fun we used to have  when  professional photographers were in attendance!
