Really Old Airstream questions. Non-standard roof holes?
« on: July 02, 2008, 10:36:36 PM »
A friend of mine just bought a 1966 Airstream that he has begun gutting and is about to bring it to my farm so I can help him rebuild it.  I just looked at a couple of pictures and now I am a little concerned.  The roof vents look about the same 14"x14" hole, but appear to have very rounded edges.  Additionally, the roof AC unit appears to be of a bit different than the current units that mount on the 14"x14" holes.

Do trailers this old use many dimensions that are non-standard by todays standards?

Search on the web for Airstream.  There are a few vintage AS sites.  Also check on Yaqhoo.

I think you will find the Airstream has a lot of unique parts, shapes and sizes. Be prepared to scavenge the RV salvage lots for them. You can get a lot of help from the Airstream owners groups. Check the Yahoo Groups for the AirstreamList and Vintage_Trailers - both are excellent sources for old trailer projects.

While you have it gutted check the wiring and make sure it isn't aluminum wire.  My son has an old Airstream that has aluminum wiring that almost caused a fire.  Fortunately he came home before it burst into flames and he turned the power off.

I will agree.. Airstream does have unique parts in part due to it's shape... As for the roof vents being "Rounder" on the corners.. You can square them out, You may not have to.  As for the A/C That is an older style and again.. A new one may fit the same hole.

As for the TV antenna... A company in Battle Creek, Michigan makes 'em.  When I lived in B.C. I had a friend who worked there. He was from England and used to serve in the navy, submarine service.  The joke is they hired him cause when he makes a weather seal.. IT DOES NOT LEAK!

(He did not work on seals there however, someone else did)
