2012 Ford F-150 Ecoboost?

(1/3) > >>

Stormrider51:
I've started shopping for a truck to pull our 9,200 lb bumper pull RV.  I was looking at a Ford F-250 Super Duty that I know would do the job when the salesman told me about the F-150 Ecoboost.  It's supposedly rated for 11,000 lb+ towing capacity.  Gas mileage figures look surprisingly good at 16/22.  Anyone have any experience with one of these yet?  Good and bad points?  Any problems showing up?  They quoted me a price of $33K,

Thanks,
Storm

While I don't own one, a friend at work does.  He is very happy with it, no complaints since his purchase last fall.  He's actually looking to move to a 5th Wheel now and has found a number of units that the Ecoboost can handle.

I've heard good things about the Ecoboost, but really, with a trailer that big and heavy, I would opt for the F-250.  I don't remember the mileage the folks with the Ecoboost got not towing, but towing they were down to 8 or 9 mpg.  Like I said, I would go for the F-250.  While my diesel is a much higher outlay of cash up front, I know it will last a lot longer.  And I'm averaging almost 20mpg not towing in my daily driving.  And it tows my 11,000 5th wheel beautifully.

If you don't tow a lot (not a full-timer), the Ecoboost may work fine for you.

Peanutman:
Remember Ford Eco-Boost or any other vehicle that switches from 8 to 6 cylinders to conserve gas works only under optimal conditions. Put a load behind it and it will run off 8 cylinders most of the time making it no more efficient than the standard v-8.
Don't get caught up in the sales hype. My trailer is 34' long and weights 10,700 lbs empty.

You need to look at a trucks gross tow capacity. That will be truck fully loaded and trailer fully loaded as one unit.

A 3/4 ton will probably suite you better. If you buy a half ton and a couple of years want a bigger trailer you will be limited. A 3/4 ton gasser will run close in price to the Eco-Boost and a diesel option will add about 8-10k to the cost of that 3/4 ton gasser.

Stormrider51:
Thanks for the input, guys.  I see one vote for the Ecoboost and two for a 3/4 tonner.  Now I'm curious.  If 6-8 mpg from the Eco when towing is accurate, what sort of mileage can I expect from the F-250 with the standard V-8 engine under the same load?
