Tow bar?baseplate Installations at Uhaul
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:56:18 PM »
Hi! It is my understanding that tow bars/baseplates can be installed by the technicians at certain Uhaul sites. Am I correct? Has anyone had these items installed by Uhaul?
If not, can you suggest where I can go in southeast Pennsylvania to have these items installed. The local dealers insist that you buy the components from them prior to them tackling the installation work.

Why not talk to your local body shop?  A body shop knows how to remove your front end assembly and...if they can read they should be able to drill and bolt the baseplate to the TOAD and then re-install the front end.  Had my body shop do it for $250 on my Cobalt.  Took them 2 hrs on a Friday afternoon and was towing the Cobalt on Saturday for a trial run.  10000 miles later I'm still satisfied.  Just my two cents...

FWIW, Blue Ox manual says 5 hours labor to install a baseplate on a 2006 Honda CRV. My son Paul, who is a mechanic, looked at the manual online and announced "piece of cake". Took the car down to his house on a Saturday morning and it was all done in an hour and a half. That included donuts time and messing with the grandkids.

Installing base plates is not rocket science, or even very complex mechanics. And installing a tow bar is child's play - just slip it in the receiver and put the retaining pin in the hole.  A U-haul shop (not just a rental agency) can certainly do it, but so can most any other shop or shade tree mechanic.

In our area, the best place is a trailer sales and service outfit.  They deal with this sort of thing and seem to be pretty knowledgeable and quick with their installations.
