Rim Saver

(1/2) > >>

For Wheelin:
I had new tires installed at a (truck) tire shop, the guys found on the inside of the front tires only, a steel band wrapped dead center around the inside of the rim, spaced off the surface of the rim about 1/4" with plastic spacers.  These are rim savers of some sort meant to keep the tire on the rim in the event of a blow out.  I use bead locks on my off road vehicles and bikes which literally lock the tire to the rim at the bead...this type doesn't seem like it would help much.

Anyhow, this shop rarely sees these devices and does not have the means to mount the new tires without possibly damaging the bead.  They explained that motorhomes and trucks that come in and happen to have this style, they remove them and claim it is still safe to drive without them.

Has anybody had any experience with these bands, or other rim savers?  Am I taking a chance removing them?

Thanks,

CarlGeo:
Sounds like you have Tyron devices on the wheels.  They can be life savers in event of a blowout, and I would NOT remove them.  I would find a shop that knows how to deal with Tyron devices - it's not difficult.
Tyron bands are quite expensive and very, very good pieces of equipment.  KEEP THEM ON YOUR WHEELS!

John From Detroit:
Carl beat me to it. I second his remarks.

These bands are not intended to save the rims, they save YOU and your coach.

IF you have a suddenl blow out at speed, the tire tends to fall into the well in the middle of the rim and cost you control, this also shreads the tire.. I used to have a car where this did nto happen and I could drive on a flat, NORMALLY no less. Due to the design I could safely run flat, at least at low speeds, I was amazed.

The Tyron bands add this same ability to your rig.  Any quality tire guy shoudl be able to deal with them.   I would not remove them.

And for those who do not have them.. Next time you change a tire, Consider haveing them added.

Gary RV Roamer:
See if they look like this device - http://www.tyron.com/

If so, I would keep them. They are expensive and they do work.

For Wheelin:
Good call, they are the Tyron bands.  I had a feeling it was a mistake to allow them to take them off.  I will definately bring the coach into a shop that knows how to deal with them and re-install.

Thanks much guys,
