I went to the TT yesterday to check things out.  I haven't been up there for a while for various reasons (death in the family, found out my garage at the stick house has water/termite damage).  Still waiting for a calm weekend to go there and enjoy.

Anyhow, checked the nomenclature on the #8 wire like I said I would.  It consisted of a bit more than I thought it would.  But here goes...

8 AWG  MTW or THWN or THHN or GAS AND OIL RESISTANT 11  VW1  600V or AWM

What have I got?

Good news!  All the extra letters made me think it was some kind of universal wire that may not be suited for a very specific application.

I think I know what I am going to do now.  Many thanks to all.

All those extra letters are there to let the electrician, the electrical inspector and the customer know exactly what the wire is. Those markings are required by the electrical code. It actually is some kind of universal wire and the application you want it for is one of the most common applications.

Works for me.  Thanks to all.
