Surge Protection

(1/3) > >>

Jcham:
I just purchased and Triple E GT 28 class C RV.
I suggested to the dealer that we add a surge protector between the electrical source and the RV. He said it was not necessary since the vehicle already had circut breakers, and the surge protector would be redundant. Is this true? Any further advice

Thanks
Jim

NO!! A surge protector is quite different from a circuit breaker.  The circuit breaker is there to protect the wiring from a severe overload, nothing more, nothing less.  The surge protector is there to protect the electronics from high voltage spikes.  The best is a surge protector/voltage protector that turns off the voltage if it gets either too high or too low preventing damage to electronics and motors.

I have one that is also the transfer switch as well as the surge protector and over/under voltage protector.  Protective Dynamics makes a good one for either 30 or 50 amps RVs.

Just Lou:
Surely, you jest?  ALL RVs have circuit breakers.  They have NOTHING to do with whether or not a surge protector is appropriate or required.

I wouldn't risk a new RV without  some power protection.  JMHO

His lips were moving so that should have told you something.  Get a good quality surge protector and reward the "dealer" for his intelligence by having someone else install it.  No excuse for stupid in his line of business. ;)

That is correct, surge protection is not necessary to the dealer as it is not his Rv anymore.  ;)
Most salesman are idiots and they do not own Rv's, they sell them. Big difference.
Follow this post, get surge protection before you plug into a CG pedestal or your next post will be on repairing electronics.
