Cant start coach, low voltage

(1/3) > >>

mooch:
I have a 2007 fleetwood excursion.  I cant start the coach, the voltage is too low.  I have 13.65 volts at the batteries, but my meter in the coach reads only 11.6 volts and it is acting like it is only seeing this much.  I must have a short somewhere in between.  any idea on where to start looking?  I checked all the fuses and circuit breakers.

SeilerBird:
I would start with the chassis ground connection of the motor.

Assuming you are talking about the engine or chassis battery and not the house batteries....

Your coach is likely fitted with the system to charge the engine battery while plugged in to see that on the engine battery. If the coach plugged in and the charger/converter is on when you read the 13.6 Volts, the voltage you are reading is a result of that. Otherwise, you will never read that high on a battery that is not being charged. The maximum you might see would be about 12.6 with a FULL charge.

Try reading across the battery with no cable connected. I'll bet you will see a much lower value.  How old is the battery?? If 5 years or so, it will likely need replacing. The possibility of a short is very unlikely, chances are it is just a low battery or one with a bad cell!!

I read that high on the chassi batteries while they were not plugged in!  I did just remove the plug a few minutes before checking though.  The batteries are one year old.  I should be getting the same reading at the batteries and inside the coach at the meter I would think.

Ron from Big D:
Remove the batter cables at the battery and clean them good, replace and see what you have.
