Testing Brake Buddy

(1/3) > >>

loddy:
Hi Guys
I have a brake buddy for the toad (Jeep Wrangler) and wonder if there is anyway of testing this piece of equipment. I have just traveled East across death valley and had the  brakes smoking on the motor home, there seems to be no assistance from the toad brakes at all. When pressing the test button it seems to work.

Any comments would be appreciated

You may have to change the sensitivity adjustment.  Have someone ride in the towed while you make a hard stop and see if the brake applies.  If it's working correctly, you won't feel it at all.  Do you have a remote indicator in the motorhome that tells you if the towed brakes are being applied?

Hi Ned
I think it may work in an emergency but it's the bit of help going downhill that I need, no I don't have a indicator, I have tried all the settings to no avail, I have towed in the UK for more years that I care to remember and you can tell when the towed vehicle is helping through the seat of your pants.
I have the same RV as you and don't find the brakes that good, how do you find yours ???

Ned:
You would have to ask my driver about the brakes :)  We've gone down some steep grades and never had a braking problem, but we do make good use of the exhaust brake and keep the speed under control so the transmission stays in a lower gear.

You really need to add a remote indicator so you know if the towed brake is being applied.  We have the Blue Ox kit (it will work with any brake that uses the brake pedal) that triggers the transmitter off of the brake light line on the brake pedal and the receiver has a light that lights in the motorhome when the brakes are actually applied.  It's wireless from the towed to the motorhome.  If your towed brakes ever lock up you'll be glad you have the indicator.

Ours does actuate on a hard stop, even at low speeds, such as a rapidly changing traffic light, so we know it works.

Thanks Ned
I'll have to get the other half to travel in the Jeep and blow the horn every time it works, at least it will give my right ear a rest.

(resting in Vegas at the moment (Oasis RV resort ))
