Transmission Fluid ..Complete Change...Need Help

OK, bought this unit several months ago. As part of my PM, I want to completely flush the transmission fluid and replace with all new.
So, can anyone tell me if the torque converter has its own drain plug? and if so, how do you do this...just let it drain?
I can drain all of the fluid from the pan, remove pan, change filter, BUT what about the remaining fluid in the torque converter?
I wanted to just drain the fluid in the pan and replace, BUT was cautioned not to do this because I didn't know what kind of fluid was in it and you can't mix some Mercon fluids without damaging the transmission.
So, I have to do a complete job.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

As far as I know, The only way to get a complete change is to go to a shop that has a pump to flush the TC.
Gary RV Roamer:
Odds are the original owner never changed the tranny fluid, so it has the original yet. That would be Mercon compatible. Besides, as far as I know, the only fluid that would be possible harmful is the old Type F, which had no friction modifiers. Most tranny fluids on the market today meet both Mercon and Dexron specs anyway, and thus they can be mixed.
Or, you can drain the pan and fill with Mercon and run the engine in neutral for 10-15 minutes. Then drain again and refill with new fluid. Now you have somewhere between 75-100% new. To be really sure, drain, refill and run the engine yet another time. Each cycle reduces the amount of residual fluid. Costs you in fluid but saves the expense of a shop doing a flush.

To answer Paul's converter drain question, yes, there is a drain plug in your 2000's torque converter. It's accessed by removing the black rubber plug in the bottom of the bell housing, and bumping or turning the converter until the plug lines up with the opening. Note that only the 1999, 2000, and 2001 models had the plug. Ford discontinued it for 2002 on.

So, See if I got this correct:
Pull drain plug on tranny and allow all fluid to drain.
Pull torque converter plug and allow to drain. (What do I have to do to turn the torque converter? does it just turn easily...need to be in neutral?)
Replace drained fluid with new "Dex/Merc" (from Ford service guy) and I'm good to go.
Is there any fluid left in the tranny when I drain it this way?
Capacity is 17.7 qts according to the manual.
This almost sounds too easy...is there something I'm missing?
Thanks,
Paul
