Transmission Fluid ..Complete Change...Need Help

<< < (3/3)

Molaker:
If you drain it completely, this might be a good time to go to synthetic.  These transmissions can get pretty hot and synthetic fluid stands up to higher temps.  I had to have my torque conv. rebuilt so it was drained well.

It's accessed by removing the black rubber plug in the bottom of the bell housing, and bumping or turning the converter until the plug lines up with the opening. Note that only the 1999, 2000, and 2001 models had the plug. Ford discontinued it for 2002 on.

Had some extra time this afternoon and laid the ol' piece of cardboard on the driveway and went under the MH...found the rubber plug in the tranny.  Looking for the drain plug (2000 Ford Chassis, I do have the 4R100 tranny)
Removed it and stuck my finger in the hole to check if the drain plug might be nearby.
Felt a bolt so I 'bumped' the starter and found a hex bolt in the torque converter dead center in the hole.
I AM a Blessed man.
So Here's what it looks like to me.

1.  Remove the hex bolt from the torque converter and drain fluid.
2.  Remove the plug from the transmission pan and drain fluid.
3.. Not too concerned with the liquid in the cooler line, so let this go.
4.  Replace both hex bolt and pan plug.
5.  Refill transmission with the current Dex/Merc (Mercon equivalent according to the ol' guy at the Service Dept. at Ford garage).
...An advice about getting appx 18 qts of ATF down the SMALL, almost horizontal filler tube???????
(Refill with the same quantity that was removed).

Start engine, run through all of the gears, holding in each gear for about 30 sec.
Back to park and shut down.
Check dipstick and see if I'm somewhere in the "cold" fill range.
Adjust accordingly, check frequently after driving.

For those who have done this....is this sequence OK?
Is the use of Dex/Merc OK?

This will be a job for this week, so please let me know if you see any problems.

Thanks for your time and reply.
Paul
