drive on:
I am planning on towing a ford mustang, just curious if anybody else has done the same

:-\ I'm struggling with this very same question. I have an '03 GT with a 4.6L V-8 manual 5-speed. Some say okay for 4-down, some say not okay. I'm going to cover all the bases and just get an 18' car hauler and let her ride on that with a custom cover. I don't want to take any chances of tranny damage because I will drive more than 350 miles a day and faster than 45mph !

Back in the day, nobody had a rollback wrecker, and they towed those things flat all the time, though maybe not forever. And how many of us have towed flat to the drag strip...but that was then, this is now.
I cannot speak to the rear wheel drives, but we tow our Honda 6-speed manual flat, and have for 14,000 miles. Different setup, agreed.
We thought about trailering a vintage car, too, but then the issue was how to get the trailer parked on arrival, where to store, etc.
If you are really going to be racking up the miles, though, at speed, I can see why that might not be an option for you.

remco towing will answer most of your questions depending on year, transmission ect also check the owners manual

I took the original post to be concerned with a vintage Mustang, since I have had several, and I dismissed later models. :-\
To the second poster, with a 2003 edition, Remco indicates the manual transmission, rear wheel drive, would be towable as is.
I would be interested, however, to know what year the OP is wanting to tow.
