Do I need a spare tire?

by Tom Jones

I'm sometimes concerned about not carrying a spare tire for our Monaco diesel motorhome, especially when we travel to remote areas. The question also gets asked periodically by forum newcomers. The following is a compilation of responses from forum members.

  • The size and weight of a spare for a typical diesel coach could cause injury to someone attempting to change it. Partly for this reason, some manufacturers do not provide spare rims/tires with their coaches.
  • The size and weight of a spare would cut into available storage space and payload. If you really must carry a spare, consider carrying an unmounted tire.
  • Some roadside emergency repair outfits will either not have a spare tire or not be able to change it roadside. However, ERS companies such as CoachNet will dispatch someone who can change a tire and, if requested, will locate a spare tire.
