1985 Itasca In-Dash Air Removal. Compressor?

I've wondered that myself. I don't know if it is the original fan. The clutch is a NAPA replacement for this vehicle. I've not tried belt dressing. Perhaps it is in my future??? Our last outing, the first 80 miles, or so, on I5 no squealing. Stopped to pickup my son in Newberg, OR and it...

1985 Itasca In-Dash Air Removal. Compressor?

We've owned it for about 4 years and the problem of squealing fan belt is not a new one. I've posted about it before: http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,66028.msg606283.html#msg606283 and that is when I removed the air pump (it had a bed bearing) and replaced the fan clutch. As I...

1985 Itasca In-Dash Air Removal. Compressor?

My problem is two-fold. One is the squealing fan/alt belt when the fan clutch engages and, Two; Stopping the fan clutch from engaging every few minutes at highway speeds. Removing the AC cooling condenser should do this (problem two). We've had nothing but trouble with fan (clutch type) coming...

Two electrical questions about 1985 Itasca

I'll see what I can find today.

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

Update: To stop the AIR pump from turning, even though it has no belt, I decided to remove the pump unit completely. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to loosen the bolts/nuts (working inside the wheel well). They were probably rusted solid. Poking around, I saw that the new belt was actually...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

Good point. But the squealing did stop as soon as it was by-passed. My guess is that I just need to remove it and plug the hole in the bottom of the air horn.

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

I was sure the problem was solved, but not yet. I bought two pipe caps and screwed them on where the check valves were connected to the AIR distribution manifolds. Started the engine and danged if that AIR pump isn't still turning. No belt in the pulley groove and outlets to manifolds...

You are correct. Hoses and check valves off. Tomorrow I'll pick up some 1/2" pipe caps. I had some HT silicon (two tubes) Hard like a rock. Guess I'll get some more of that, too. My repair will cost me less than $20.  Far better than a new alternator. I'm relieved. Thanks for all the help.

That wasn't what I was looking for at all. No wonder I couldn't see it. I was expecting one connection to each manifold. Now what ds was saying makes more sense. Got all components located and, yes, they are right on top where I can plainly see them. I don't think I'll try taking the fittings...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

And I thought it was my understanding. My mind isn't as sharp as it once was.....just like my equalibrium isn't quite as equal as it once was. Do the tubes connect at the bottom of the exhaust manifolds? Too much stuff on top to see them or maybe I just don't recognize them. I see one tube (...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

You just helped me understand one thing about the AIR system. I changed the belt by-passing the AIR pump. Started the coach and it did not squeal. Alternator is OK. But something else happened that I did not expect. The AIR pump is still turning. Since it is a vane pump without a drive...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

So the AIR pump is meant to increase torque and not decrease emissions? Everything I've read says it is an emissions control device. And not a very good one at that. I've seen nothing, yet that mentions torque or horse power or engine performance as a result of the AIR pump....at least until...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

Perhaps, John. But that doesn't compute in my little brain either. A venturi creates a vacuum and exhaust systems are under pressure. Can't have both in the same space, can you? At any rate, I've been spending the past hour or so researching the AIR systems prior to cat converters and it seems...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

Interesting...and confusing at the same time. If the air pump is to get air into the exhaust, it must be higher pressure than the normal exhaust  pressure. If the pressure is higher than the engine exaust, why wouldn't the added pressure keep the engine from exhausting the engine gasses? That...

1985 Itasca w/ 454.....left the outer belt on the highway.....

I believe the air pump is working OK. Although I don't know what an air pump is or what it does. The squeal is coming from the alternator and the belt...at the same time (two squeals).  Actually, as I think about it, it could be the air pump OR the alternator. I thought it was the alternator...
