Thanks Lou, I too was/am considering whether or not the Trik-L-Start was affecting the converter, but I think I am going to let the whole thing stabilize for a couple of days, and also regroup my thoughts before I do any additional troubleshooting. Just don't want to set myself on the path of...
Makes it a fairly reasonable guess that Chome is intended to be not just a browser, but to direct you to Google services via the OS. Funny, 'cause that's what got Microsoft in trouble a few years back.
Not sure what the "say goodnight" reference was, but I am revisiting the post to say that after many hours of aggravation the entire problem was traced back to a bad connection at the main/chassis/engine battery. Cleaned that up, charged everything back up, and all is fine.
In the meantime...
Good point Ned, I don't know where I came up with the X64 reference although I was pretty sure I had seen it earlier in the thread. Maybe just a subconscious thing.
But it does add a whole new dimension to things.
I'd retitle the subject Printers and Vista with emphasis on 64-bit.
The issue is, almost no manufacturers are going to go back and write new drivers for devices that were made prior to the x64 OS. It is simply too cost-prohibitive to spend a lot of $$$ writing drivers for an obsolete product...
The site Marsha refers to might be "www.fixya.com", which has a lot of info (some not terribly helpful so you have to filter) and I've found solutions there to problems with all manner of appliances, including wide-screen projection TVs, also by brand//model which is nice.
For what it is worth, I use a combination of the free Malwarebytes removal tool and the Combofix tool for all really nasty (hard to get rid of) infections. From those two I've been able to solve most any problem. I clean up 3-4 machines per week (as a rough average).
My experience has been...
Tom,
Sorry for the delay, I've been out ATVing all day. Malwarebytes setup should run OK in safe mode from CD or USB unless you have a particularly virulent piece of Malware. I've not had any problems.
Tom, another very powerful tool to try is ComboFix.
ComboFix instructions - A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix
It is more along the lines of a true technician's tool and I don't recommend it for novices, however I've had quite a lot of success with it in the case of rootkit and other...
If you download Malware Bytes, burn it to CD, boot safe mode with networking (so the program can update after installation), then run the installer that should work fine. I do it all the time.

I have an intermittent problem in that regard (system says jacks are down occasionally when they really aren't), so if you'd post the fix or PM me I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mike
Good point Dave.
I was taught (and I preach it to others when I see them recklessly pointing a firearm, even unloaded) that if you point a weapon at someone, you better damn well intend to use it.
