    re-introduction

The most stressful part is simply driving with over 6000 pounds behind me and limited braking and visibility compared to a car.  My kids have learned to "assume" nothing and will tell me if they think i'm going to hit something, and they are also good spotters.  Someone gets out at every gas...

    re-introduction

Hi all, Am back after two years.  We live in East Africa and keep a trailer in North America to have a "home away from home" instead of cramming in with the relatives.  We used it the first summer but last year were unable to last year so am feeling like a newbie all over again.  Have had the...

    cable tv question

Thanks for all the advice.  I did find a cable, maybe about 10 feet, if that doesn't work, oh well...  I'm pretty sure the t.v. isn't too old as the trailer is an '04.  Anyway, we head out today so i'll know in a few hours.

    cable tv question

That's sounds simple enough.  With all the things i've had to learn to do for the trailer, connecting a cable should be a piece of cake!

    cable tv question

We don't watch much tv and we don't have cable or satellite at home, usually just watch DVDs  when we do watch something.  I noticed a number of campsites advertise cable and i think i saw what looks like an antenna socket (if that's the right word) on the outside of the trailer.  Having cable...

    tow mode/transmission question

Okay, i'm going to see how it does in OD and then decide, on small hills i'm sure it will downshift accordingly.  However, going through the mountains, in PA, for example, it's probably best to downshift manually, right?  I think i read somewhere to go to 1st and then work my way up, is that right?

    tow mode/transmission question

So if the vehicle is in OD and is not changing gears when i'm on a level road going a constant speed then it's okay?

    tow mode/transmission question

I have been advised to keep my vehicle in 4th rather than overdrive when towing my trailer to protect the transmission.  Someone else has said that is what tow mode is for. My question is, what does the tow mode do?  I thought it was for electrical things, like turn signals, and brakes.

How do you weed out the "Knowledgeable" from the "Know-it-All" ??

Riverdog, One thing i can say, as a newcomer, is if you are uncomfortable with the answer or confused, ask more questions, eventually things become clear.  It is so common on the internet that one thinks one has written a clear post but to someone else it may be a bit confusing which can cause...

the learning process... (a bit long)

Thanks, it seems it will just take some experience to really feel comfortable.

the learning process... (a bit long)

A kind neighbor drove our new (2nd hand) trailer to the repair shop for tire replacement and the next day I managed to drive it home all by myself.  I managed the 25 mile trip without incident and feel a bit better about the whole thing although it feels very strange back there.  I think the...

    trailers and brakes

The trailer has a weight distribution hitch and sway bars.  I don't have a lot of choice on the brake controller as it is going in today but if they have the brand you recommend i'll get it. Wish me luck, i'm not looking forward to this first setup and driving attempt.

    trailers and brakes

Isn't the weight distribution system already in the tow package?

    trailers and brakes

Okay so i have a Nissan Armada with a tow package.  Does this mean i don't have to put anything else on my car or do i need something special for the brakes of the trailer to work? modified a few minutes later: LOL, i'm not used to having true high speed internet so didn't do a search until...

Have seen our trailer at last!

So we are back in the U.S. and have finally seen the new "old" trailer.  The kids are very excited and i have a more realistic idea of what i'm in for.  We have an appt. for this Thursday to get the tires replaced and brake system installed.  Hope to take it out a few times locally next week.
