If your Journey is similar to the Tour you may have a slide lock that is not releasing.

Maybe you could use heavy duty DPDT relays instead of knife switches. If they were energized by plugging in the coach then you wouldn't have to worry about having all the knife switches closed at the same time.  This is similar to how they wire external power to airplanes and helicopters.
