May have to clean the connections at the starter too. I had a similar situation.....turned the key on ( in park / emergency brake on) got under the engine and crossed the connection at the starter and fired it up....got me home...

Mine caught fire........put some tires next to it and pulled it out on them ...had to do it by myself.....when I can afford another one. I will have help I hope
The housing is fiberglass I think. Remove the generator , should have 4 bolts holding the top half on, they might have come loose making it appear to be warped
